Why do people assume they should get updates? Technology progresses very fast and tomorrows phones will be able to do things that today's can't. You shouldn't expect your phone to be magically able to handle these things.

People have short memories, before the iphone came on the scene, can you ever remember updating your phone? And before the iphone came on the scene can you remember getting a free major OS update anywhere (linux does not count), not just on the phone?

This is great news. This will be make people upgrade to newer and better technology :apple:

Oh yes...because we all have completely disposable incomes these days and can afford to buy into inflated contracts and $600-phones every year. Apple can go ***** itself. My iPhone 3G runs perfectly well after being jailbroken and unlocked...and I use the multitasking feature (just not wallpapers). For the last ten years, Apple has left those who own a device 1+ years old in the dust. We will not see Rosetta in Mac OS 10.7. Mark my words.

In the past, I upgraded a phone when it broke or when its signal quality was so poor that it needed to be replaced. As a phone, the iPhone works (ish). I will not replace it until it breaks. So why should I be forced into buying a new phone every year? Perhaps you have nothing better to spend your money on.

How are you being forced?

Supporting new features on old hardware holds back performance and enhancements on newer technology.

We've not seen Game Centre in action, we don't know it's full set of features, and given how poor iOS4 is on the 3G, it's no surprise another feature has been dropped.

It sucks, but technology moves on.

sell your old one. you can easily make more than a new phone coasts.

Hmm...that's not a bad idea. I hope someone wants a phone that has an LCD screen that doesn't dim when you take a call. Damn ambient light sensor...

Guys,

Dont forget that Apple are STILL selling the 2nd Gen Touch - If you've just bought one, Apple have screwed you over.

Also dont forget, the 3G was still being sold right up until the iPhone 4 came out...and you cant tell me Apple didnt know that they were crapping all over those 3G customers.

Unlike some, not everyone has a disposable income, and if you think Apple products should only be for the millionaires you are an idiot.

Face it fanboys - Apple doesn't give a monkeys about you, they care about money, nothing more. Its not about "magical" devices, its about something shiny for you to stare at.

Cant wait till Android is viable. For now, its Jailbreak time.

(SIDENOTE: Despite what you may think - I'm not trolling. I'm stating clear facts)

Thank god, the iPhone 3G with iOS4 already feels like a PowerMac G3 on Tiger. It wouldn't be usable anyways, iBooks is barely useable. I miss calls all the time, because the dialog comes up very late and if you manage to slide the bar to receive the call, the caller is already in voice mail. Safari just crashed becuase I got mail (Yes, I'm writing on my 3G right now). Houston, we need RAM up here.
I wonder how long it takes until they develop MicroDIMM-DDR so we can at least extend the lifetime of our Smartphones a bit - not that Apple would built in a slot for that. I'd be already grateful for Micro-SDHC.

Worst thing is that I signed up for my iPhone in April 2009 and I'm eligible for the iPhone 4 on September 30th. I'll skip the iPhone 4 and get the 4GS/5 in June - I don't want to use software for iPhone 5GS/6 on an iPhone 4 again. Just another example for the "Get it while it's hot"-rule.

At least in terms of their reasoning for limiting multitasking and background wallpapers - they were actually 100% correct.

I have a friend with a jailbroken iPhone 3G, which had multitasking and background wallpapers enabled. It was SLOW AS HELL.

I downloaded zToggle from Cydia, disabled both features, and suddenly the phone was back to its speedy normal.

I can't understand what would be the reason for disabling Game Center though... this does seem more like a business decision.

most games in the app store say ipod touch or iphone and will work on 1st gen hardware. i've had a 3GS since launch and there are probably less than 10 games today that take advantage of it's capabilities. i don't see a need for iphone 4 since all the software works on hardware older than mine.

i bet this is making steve jobs mad. not like he can just ban middle ware dev kits

only idiots bought 3G's earlier this year. iphones are cheaper than a lot of android phones and the 3GS was only $100 more over 2 years compared to a 3G. only the math challenged couldn't figure it out

I've tried many jailbroken iPhones and 99% they runs much more worse than original software. You should be paranoid or just telling a lie. Wallpapers could be on 3G but not as Apple implemented it with drops shadow and other effect. There is always a reason behind these moves, Apple always tried to please their users. Anyway it is only a beta, maybe 3G support will be added again.

Eh?? I have a PowerBook G4, it is super old, and it runs Leopard pretty good. I have a old MacBook first gen which runs Snow leopard good too and it has about 3-4 years. Rosetta? Ahahah do you know what are you talking about? Rosetta is a PPC emulator, it could be removed after many years, you are supposed to have updated your software in 4 years lol

Eh?? I have a PowerBook G4, it is super old, and it runs Leopard pretty good.

i agree the powerbook g4 runs leopard well i found, mine does still going strong after 5 years. i mean apple have been good in supporting this little laptop, as they still sell the battery for it on apple.com. they must know its still popular and used otherwise they wouldn't sell the spare battery for it

as i said in my earlier post i can understand why due to hardware limitations of the ram inside these older devices, people who have just brought an ipod touch 2g and posts on these forums are stupid, end of.

Also if they dropped support of it from the 4.1 beta why would they bring it back into the full version?

you have a buyers guide on this website and everyone knows there is always new ipods in September as the back to school thing.

I can't wait til Android becomes a viable competitor to iOS so Apple won't be able to pull so many dick moves like this. Isn't it interesting that the dev builds of 4.0 ran this perfectly well?

Right, because we all know that the most recent version of Android is support across all Android phones that shipped in the last two years. How many are still waiting for 2.2 support that may or may not ever come because of the Phone manufacturers?

Noooooooo

*awaits the cries of those who now have to upgrade*

Since the upgrade to iOS 4 on 3GS, it has been a double edge sword. A loss in battery life but better organization with apps and other features. I use my 2nd Gen iPod Touch for my gaming now and I play multi-player online games. this would suck for 2nd Gen iPod touch owners. I will be getting rid for iOS 4 off of my iPod Touch.:(:(:mad::(

Ooooh! Suckz to be you. You should have waited a month.

I'm getting it for £22 on the student rebate thing by buying my GF a Mac. I really couldn't care less :)

The thing that does worry me a little about Apple is the variance you get in hardware life. My 8 year old Imac G4 is still about as up to date software wise as a late G5 which is much newer. My new Imac could be kicking it well into it's 8th birthday as well or it could be redundant in a couple of years. Who knows

At least with a PC it'll age proportionally to the build cost, a cheap one is pants in 2 years where as something pricey will last 5 years.

I find it funny that everyone on here is loosing their brains when they don't even know the nature of this pull, and whether or not its indefinite. Assumption = Makes an ass out of you.
