If Apple is getting their cut of the revenue I'm not sure they really care, guys. It's basically like buying a single app that has a bunch of games in it.

I beta tested gameclub and quite honestly, I'd of rather just paid $3 a game title for the games I wanted. I appreciated the revitalizing of more than a few games I really liked. At the same time I really am not in the mood for another $5 a month service.

I'll be curious if these guys make it as they did great work by resurrecting a bunch of iOS games.

I've been on the beta of this for a while, and it's basically for if you like then-popular, older games. These are quality games that are fun to play. I don't like subscriptions, but frankly, I am so sick of free-to-play, buy gems games, that this is a welcome relief. Ideally, I'd just be able to buy the games I want, but that doesn't seem to be economically viable for the game devs.

Edit: I'd also like Apple to make it easier to turn on and off subscriptions. There should be reminders such as "Hey, you haven't opened this app in a month, would you like to cancel your subscription?" and subscription information should be much easier to find in the app store. Finally, I'd like the Settings app to contain a toggle to cancel a subscription along with the other permissions.

I discovered this by accident last week when browsing through my old purchases. One of them, Grimm, had been updated for the first time in years. It had been a good game but abandoned with the 32-to-64-bit transition. When I downloaded it, I discovered it was now part of this Game Club venture.

To my surprise, rather than asking me to pay for a subscription, it was already unlocked because I had purchased the app in the past. That’s classy.

When you buy apple, be prepared to be nickled and dimed.
How so?

App developers are allowed to make money. "Supply & Demand" will sort things out, personally I don't see this Game Cube subscription staying around long. I assume they're counting on the subscribers to forget charges hitting credit cards each month and never cancelling.

The whole point of this is to preserve classic games that aren't worth maintaining due to declining sales to new users … so of course it's a subscription. Makes a lot of sense to me: Keep maintaining games as long as someone wants to pay for it.

Apple starts a gaming subscription... Everyone else "hold my beer" LOL
This was already deep in development at that point. They've been doing Test Flight betas for it since before Arcade was even announced.

Apl will find a way to shut it down
Waiting for Apple to shut it down...
Based on what? Apple approved all not only the Game Club app itself, which is mostly just a catalog of the games available in the service and lets you buy the subscription itself, but they approved all of the updates to the individual games that are available through the service now. If they were going to "shut it down" they wouldn't have approved in excess of 50 updates all having to do with this.

When you buy apple, be prepared to be nickled and dimed.

This is quite possibly the most ridiculous comment I've ever read given the context. What precisely about a $5/month subscription for all-you-can-play gaming is nickle-and-diming? What does this even have to do with Apple itself?

While I wish this company success, I've never heard of any of these "Classic" titles... Good luck.

Then you either weren't around or weren't paying attention to games when they were originally released.

Hook Champ and its sequels were massively popular at the time and extremely well reviewed. A 2012 Wired article about Android gaming holds it up as a shining example of a great game only available on iOS.

Super Crate Box was a very popular indie PC game before being ported to Mac and then iOS.

Minigore, which is launching next week, was popular enough to spawn a sequel, and its main character appeared in other games, both on the App Store and other platforms.

The list goes on and on. The fact that you haven't heard of them says more about you than it does the titles they've chosen to resurrect.

Just like Apple Arcade, all the games suck.

Well, glad we got that out of the way. Guess we can all stop our subscriptions to both of the services now since PastaPrimav, the ultimate arbiter of taste, has laid bare the truth.

Haha. No, they are never going to be in your face, encouraging you to unsubscribe from stuff. For obvious reasons.

Most of these games came out 8-10 years ago, so back when you were still crawling around your Mom's kitchen floor.

He must be very precocious, as his profile says he joined MacRumors over eight years ago.

I really like some of the older iOS games I can't play anymore. I still regret not finishing Tiny Thief. That being said if I was going to subscribe to a gaming service Apple Arcade would be much more attractive.

Any parent of a 2-10 year old will be eternally grateful for these game subscription services. Finally, no more **** downloaded to the tablet. No more porn ads every 30 seconds while my kid is playing some worm game.

excuse me? Why the hell are you (or anyone else) giving a 2 year old a ****ing mobile device.

Thought they did not approve something like that earlier in the year?
