We have two garage doors on our home, both equipped with Genie openers... I am looking for a reliable add-on that will allow us to control the openers via CarPlay / HomeKit. (Sidebar question: Does an opener/add-on that is compatible with HomeKit also work with CarPlay or are they different features?)...

I am not looking to spend a ton of money on this - if I was of that mindset, I'd replace the openers with something that natively supports CarPlay.

So, anyone have suggestions/recommendations? Please and thanks.

Haven't checked yet but its possible you can install a homebridge server on your computer that you leave running and set up some addons that might have this built in. I do it for my ring devices until I eventually replace them.

I have a Genie garage door opener and use this Insignia controller from Best Buy. You just have to make sure you have a strong wifi signal in the garage.

And I believe any Homekit garage door opener will automatically show up in CarPlay if you have Siri suggestions enabled. But it only shows up when you're close to home.

The insignia one works up pretty well and does also show up in CarPlay. It occasionally is non-responsive and i have to unplug and replug it in and wait 5 minutes for it to start working again, but it usually works.

It’s also very easy to install.

I just discovered that I have a MyQ... I got it on sale at Amazon a while back, but had not even opened the box... so I got it installed and it works very well, but alas, NO CarPlay or HomeKit support.

If you want homekit compatibility on the MyQ they sell an additional hub that allows for it.

Why is everyone so keen on using iPhones etc. to open garage doors? Don't most vehicles have wall switches and programmable openers in the overhead consoles?

If you want to use your iphone to open and close the myQ via voice I can share you a shortcut that makes it possible via the shortcuts app. I got it from reddit and it works perfectly.

I find it most useful for the notifications when I'm not at home. Also, it's a simple way to check if you forgot to close the garage door at night or when you've left home for an extended period. Sometimes, paranoia sets in and this puts me at ease, LOL!

In my case, one of our cars does not have the HomeLink opener... if the technology is there, why not? Especially if it's available within CarPlay...

You can use them in scenes and automations to automatically close at a certain time in case you left them open inadvertently. For example, mine are in my “Goodnight” scene. Also use to open remotely to let the sprinkler guy in or whoever.

One thing to mention, if you have two garage doors, only one door will show up in a Carplay.

What openers natively Support Carplay? I’m very interested.

The insignia add-on that Best Buy sells does. Easy to install.

I have two of the Insignias. That’s a function of HomeKit though, which would make all Homekit openers CarPlay compatible. Speaking of which, there should be Home app in CarPlay. I thought the OP meant strictly through CarPlay.

All homekit openers are CarPlay compatible. CarPlay sees the garage door in your “home” and recognizes it.

There are currently no non-homekit, but CarPlay-compatible, openers. Not sure How that would even work - you’d need a CarPlay app, but it wouldn’t integrate into the CarPlay home screen, which would suck.

I understand that lol. That’s exactly what I posted.

Get the myQ adapter from Lift master. I have it and it works great.

I must be missing something obvious but it’s seeming like I can’t find an answer to this:
I have two Chamberlain WD832KEVG garage door openers. They have MyQ logos on them but not WiFi logo. I want them added to HomeKit. Do I need one Chamberlain Smart Hub per door plus one Home Bridge? I have an internet gateway that came with my garage door openers but I can’t find what it’s for.

You need one home bridge. It will work both doors.

You can use the internet gateway to connect both doors to the internet so you could control the doors through the app from anywhere, but the home bridge will replace that as well as add HomeKit ability to the doors.

Is that all I need or do I also need the kit with the door sensors to tell if the door is open or closed?

Just need the home bridge and the garage door will tell the home bridge if it’s open or not. That kit is for garage doors without MyQ.

Towards the bottom they list what the hone bridge does for all different doors and you’ll see one of them says

Adds both smartphone control and HomeKit compatibility to:
LiftMaster and Chamberlain myQ-enabled garage door openers (has a myQ logo/no Wi-Fi logo

Yes, I also had an opener already installed, that was myQ enabled already. I purchased the MYQ-G0303-SP directly from Chamberlain also, installed it and the integration with my HomeKit was straightforward.

My wife's car has CarPlay, when she gets close to our house, the CarPlay display automatically shows the garage door control and gives you the ability to open the door. Cool!

Finally got around to buying the Home Bridge. Setup was a little clunky but it’s all working now. But I can’t figure out how to get Siri to recognize “open/close both garage doors.” I can say it all in one command, like “Siri open big garage door and little garage door.” Anyone run into this extremely trivial first world problem with their setup?

Unfortunately, I noticed Siri has issues with multiple commands in one. I made two scenes, one was called, yep you guessed it lol “open both garage doors” and the other was “close both garage doors” where both scenes had both garage doors doing what I needed them to do respectively.

Oh yea Scenes. Duh. I definitely should have thought of that.
