Audacity allows for channel to track conversion
What I want to do is be able to save a stereo recording with each channel independent, so that if I don't like the mix (not just volume or pan, but left-right-center blend), I can change it, both immediately and in the future. It would also be nice to apply effects independently to each track. Unfortunately there is no easy way to turn a channel into a track in GB.
I am working from tape, but the same applies to someone playing guitar and singing directly into GB (2 mics): They can't have the voice and guitar on separate tracks. So they can't blend left and right channels or apply one effect to the guitar and a different one to the voice.
You can jump through hoops exporting to other programs that will separate the channels into 2 mono tracks, but it seems odd that GB doesn't have a 3-click solution to this.
I downloaded Audacity last night. It is free an makes it simple:
1. Import your stereo file into Audacity.
2. Open the track menu (click the arrow next to the track title), and choose Split Stereo Track.
3. Select the lower track (the right channel) by clicking it in the area around the mute/solo buttons.
4. Choose Invert from the Effects menu.
5. Using the track menus, change each track to Mono.
