Have you had a chance to try ilife04? This dvd included GB v1.0 that is rated for G3 600Mhz or better. Software instruments become available on G4 & G5 or better cpus. Here's a useful website about garageband with a community as well.

Apple's ilife 04 pess release.

Audacity is another that comes to mind. They recommend at least 1Ghz cpu and 1Gb ram for basic tracking and 2 & 2 for larger multi track projects although I have a few musician buddies who have used Audacity on slower spec'd ppc ibooks without problem. Certainly, it depends on what you're doing and how realistic your expectations are. Anyhow, they still have a supported DAW for OS9 which is neat. I would give them a shot if GB1 is too sluggish for you.

Good luck :)
Installed Panther and took off Tiger. System is much more responsive already. Copying the '04 iLife over now from USB. Seems to be going well. Thanks.

My recording interface was terrible using USB1 also - random noise, squeals, failure etc. on my QSG4. I solved the interface issues (presonus Audiobox) by moving from the stock USB1 to an installed USB2 PCI card. It's been rock solid since. I also had great results using a FW400 cable to (Presonus Firebox), so with your ibook, using the FW400 for an interface sounds like a solid idea. Coming purely from my geeky streak, I think having a partition running an OS9 DAW software environment would be cool. I mean why not, right? I hope iLife04 works better for you.

Good luck :)

Oddly enough, I had the opposite experience installing versions of OSX on my QSG4. Tiger was sluggish while leopard was much snappier. Granted there is a world of difference between your single 600mhz G3 and the dual 1Ghz of my G4. Anyhow, I hope all goes well for you!

Thanks. iLife '04 IS better. I got the slow disc error msg so I attached a 7200 rpm external drive in Firewire mode and that took care of that! I actually recorded two tracks. 4-tracks ran fine. Everything was recorded without effects. I liked it so I exported to iTunes. Then converted to mp3. Now if I can get a browser working in Panther I'd be happy. Then I can easily put the ditty up here for you all to hear. ;)
[doublepost=1486774529][/doublepost]Maybe I should upgrade to Tiger for mail and browser integration? I like how snappy overall Panther is vs Tiger. Maybe it's just placebo because Garageband is working now.
