It is individual. The AWU didn't give me the best results either. It's to big, and square. I use AW8 and a Garmin now. The FR965 never give me good values, even though it's so lightweight.
The epix Pro (Gen 2), Fenix 7 Pro, Enduro 2, etc, all give me great both of me
No, ELEVATE 5 and 5 are pretty much the same, although ELEVATE 5 does perform a little bit better in situations where ELEVATE 4 used to show some less accuracy.

The smaller and lighter watches have usually been doing better than the bigger and heavier ones, but ever since the Fenix 7/epix (Gen 2), I personally have had more luck with the bigger watches. I think it's because they are more stabel on my wrist than the lighter ones. I have pretty funny wrists 🙂
that’s why it’s an individual thing. I had the Epix pro 51 and now I have the 965 and I have much better readings on the 965. i’ve always had better readings with the lighter watches

That's my concern with the Ultra 2. I use an aluminum watch today and have small wrists. I'm hoping that with the Ultra it will just be a matter of cranking the strap extra tight to keep it in place.

I do triathlons, a watch for swimming and running, a dedicated bike computer.
Apple watch is fine for running, and I love the single device for running while listening to podcasts etc.
But, I wear my Garmin (and use the ultra as an iPod during exercise)

the ultra is a pain to use when swimming needing combinations of button presses for control, and I get tired of it starting random stuff when I get in the shower. It just needs better button configuration. The action button is more like an actionless button. Let me start and stop a run or swim via the action button, let me lock the screen with a long press…there’s a lack of config allowed. Even the devs get frustrated because Apple just lock stuff down.
the other problem for me is the reliance on apps that we trust but are likely written by someone who is not medically or fitness trained. HRV is not the only metric for recovery.

so I’ll stay with my Garmin until I get some better usability from my Ultra, and I cannot see this in IOS 10.

I could never go back to Apple until they catch up to Garmin with metrics. Garmin's is just sooo much better. Athlytic, training today, healthfit pale in comparison. I have my phone for everything else, don't need the redundancy on my wrist. But that's me.

While more information is always nice, do you really need it? The recovery part would be interesting, but you should always listen to your body and what it’s trying to tell you, and not a watch

You can try the Ultra and if the HR is not good, return it. It's worth a shot. I wear any strap loosely during the day and doing exercise I crank it up high. With the Epix 51 pro it didn't work.

Exactly. I waited before I traded in my Ultra until Apples show. I realized that they weren't going to add any metrics to their software this year. I don't care for training today or Athlytic so back to Garmin I went. If Apple EVER comes close to Garmin Connect I will go back.

I do listen to my body also. But training load, training status and most importantly training ratio is something my body can't really tell me. Thats more important to me than having Siri or notifications on my watch. I have a phone for that.

Thanks. Yeah that’s what I do with the S8 and so far so good. I’m hoping the same strategy will apply.

In general I agree, but to the extent your watch can structure workouts based on your recovery and past performance, I find that compelling.

I'm also considering humango.ai with my AW (or garmin), but at the moment I'm liking the workouts suggested by Garmin better.

That's a good point. iOS10 and new Watch OS are some improvements and marketing driven stuff which sounds/looks nice, but in detail many stuff is missing... Offline Topo Maps nice, but only in US at the moment, only when iPhone is with you and so on...
Otherwise do we have the chance to use some great apps like WorkOutDoors, Healthfit, ...

Garmin Connect is the worst piece they offer. I hope no-one will do stuff like Garmin connect again. :D
Oh - looks like you don‘t like Garmin Connect at all. But why? Of course it‘s huge and has many many functions, menus and so on… But it‘s not like closing the rings every day stuff. Apple never gives you a break at all. It‘s everyday a new day and every day you have to close the rings.

If you want a rest day and can’t deal with your rings not being closed you can simply reduce your targets for the day and put them back the following day.

Exactly this.

To me, that's just cheating yourself. The closing rings stuff is stupid IMO.

I don't see how it's cheating yourself. What's wrong with having different targets for different days? I don't close my rings every day, but what would you suggest for someone who does want to close their rings every day but also have a rest day?

If you want to close your rings every day then Apple give you that option to change your targets. If you don't want to close your rings every day then don't do it :)

yeah, I never worried about closing my rings. Just didn’t seem important to me.

Have you ever watched a Fitness+ Video from Apple.... It's always rings, rings, rings and close your rings... This is getting quite annoying. My wife wanted to use Fitness+ but stops it after the first session because she's getting annoyed by that 'ring speech' of Apple.
