I'm not an athlete in any sense of the word. I opted for Ultra because it's only another $50 from the SS S8 I was planning to buy originally, and adds quite a bit more. I was willing to buy a ceramic watch if one was released this time around. So the Ultra is perfect for me, while a Garmin isn't. My stepdad has older Garmin and Suunto watches and he's never been much of an athlete as far as I'm aware.

I don't know, if I'm hanging off the side of a mountain - the amount of days my watch will hold a charge seems to be more important than how bright the screen gets or how many complications I can fit on the screen at one time.
If you make a habit of hanging off sides of mountains, then the Garmin might be a better tool for that activitiy.
But it's Garmin that is calling out Apple and comparing themselves to a general purpose smartwatch, that honestly, can do so much more than the Garmin can. Where do you get apps for the Garmin? The Garmin Store? Uh, no thanks.

If you're not hanging off sides of mountains, you can certainly charge your watch while you're sleeping. Who cares how many DAYS your watch can last?

A standard Apple Watch can do most of what the AW Ultra can do.

After all, the majority of us aren’t trekking to the top of Mount Everest or submerging to Mariana’s Trench.

I absolutely hate these comments lol. Do you realize that EVERY high end tactical/utility watch created, originated from practical use cases, such as exploration, trekking and diving?

Watches sold to THIS day have functionality that is meant for exploration, diving and extreme events, but it is all a fashion statement.

While I am sure there will be people that make the most of the pratical use cases the AW Ultra offers, the majority of people buying this will be for that rugged/tougher look. I am 100% confident we will start seeing people making fashion statements with it, this will be seen as much cooler then those gold edition watches they sold

The Ultra is nice and all, but as someone who runs 60-80 miles a week, Apple can’t compete yet. 36 hours based on normal use and 1 hr of workouts and apparently 60 hours in an upcoming low power mode. Apple doesn’t say what is cut to get to 60hours. I’m guessing cutting GPS down, etc.

How long will the Ultra last connected to a power meter, plus live tracking, plus music? Can it make it through a 3 hour 22-24 mile run?

When I’m running, I don’t need constant notifications. Just emergency communication, which my 945 LTE has. Also, Apple Watches don’t work with prepaid plans and I’m not going back to post-paid plans.

Also, while some divers might get the watch, it can’t replace a dive computer until it can connect to an O2 tank and tell you how much air you have left.

The tweet is good because it shows that Garmin is worried. Garmin has sat on the same watch eco system for an long while, and have charged a hefty premium for it, not to mention the battery replacement is almost impossible. While the price is a bit high for me, it’s going to replace Garmin for many many users.

Garmin that’s what happens when you sit on your bums and watch the money flow in, Apple have come along and are going to steal some of your market.

Solar charging would be nice on the Apple Watch
I think this comparison does scores some points both directions, but if I was out in the middle of nowhere, “Keep going for up to 150 hours of battery life in GPS mode with solar charging”, is a major advantage. How many explorers carry a battery backup charger, solar panels for an Apple Watch when hiking?

The thing is, those actually hanging off the side of a mountain are a minority. They will continue buying Garmin watches, and Apple will capture most of the rest of the market.

my current apple watch series 7 45mm i have to put to charge every night my garmin basic watch at times 3 days later i need to charge it so to each its own

If you were in the market for and AW in titanium last year then you would have paid $50 more than the Ultra and it didn’t have any of the features that are unique to the Ultra 🤷🏼‍♂️
