I just got back from Costco and they're still not taking Apple Pay at the pump. I did use it at the optical dept and the regular checkout though.

That’s because contactless cards weren’t a thing in the US. When apple launched apple pay there in 2014, they clearly didn’t look at contactless penetration like they seem to do elsewhere. No. They launched it there first only because it’s their home country. Had they used the same criteria as when rolling apple pay outside the US, the US wouldn’t have been the first country to get it.

Average price of a new car in 2017 was $31,400 and the Model 3 starts at $35,000. While a little over average it is HARDY expensive by car standards and less of a percentage above average than an iPhone is over an Android phone. Also total 5 year ownership cost is less than a Camry or a Civic. Hardly Money Bragging cars and in FACT could be called almost frugal.
Plus you buy a Tesla like an iPhone and can order on-line using (I did) Apple Pay. Have also had more updates than on my Apple Watch/iPhone on the beta program.
And here is a Complication on my Apple Watch telling me the Estimated Range left (top right). You can also select Rated Range or Battery %.

That was for using the strip - they are held liable for any charges unauthorized if the card was swiped vs chip or NFC.

Which is why gas stations got an extended period to upgrade: the magnetic stripe readers on gas pumps (and also on vending machines) are much more difficult to replace than any other magnetic stripe reader. In fact, I don't think a chip reader even exists that can be installed in place of the magnetic stripe reader on a gas pump or a vending machine. In those two scenarios, magnetic stripe can be replaced with contactless only.

EV charging stations including Tesla superchargers are account based so you would already have credit card linked to the account.
I mostly charge at home but when I need to use a supercharger I just plug it in and Tesla charges it to my credit card automatically.
Anyway, I used to pay at the pumps with Samsung pay. Then I converted to electric vehicle.
A local Chevron in my area accepts Apple pay as well as other contactless payments.
I buy my beer from that Chevron because they have a good selection of micro-brews and also because they accept Apple pay.

You get 1000 miles free with the car and I have only used about 250 miles. Also I sold my home and going to buy a condo. Living in an apartment building for a year and one of the incentives/perks is free EV charging. So actually it is "Wow, free electricity!" for now.😀
Also as stated you link a CC and all you do is just plug in and charge. It identifies you and chargers your account (if you don't have free Supercharging).
Also related I tried to use Apple Pay yesterday at a parking garage since it had a proximity reader. Didn't work and later found out it's for proprietary cards for residents and employees. Probably an incompatible system but going to email them and ask.
