After seeing how well the hotspot fearure is setup and the lack of battery drain i switched off my unlimited and MyWi combo. Now i dont have to screw around with the resprings and issues JB brings and enjoy tethering any device vs just the ones that decide to work with MyWi. Well worth the extra $15 a month for 4gigs when looking back ive only gone over that a few times in well over a year. 4 gigs still gives me approx. 30 hours of slingbox streaming and other than the NCAA Tourney i rarely stream that much.

Are you certain that the 3G on your iPad was completely disabled and that it didn't hop back onto its own 3G while you were on your call? It's my understanding that the Bluetooth connection can only support one device at a time.

I can positively confirm that my ipad2's 3G service never kicked in because, I never activated it with Att and I purposely switched the cellular data setting to 'off' to prevent any data transfers by that method. Further, I am pretty sure the two devices never connected via wifi because I never entered my personal wifi password into the iPad.

Everybody says that Bluetooth takes less battery power, but that it is slower than Wifi.

I agree Wifi is faster when connected to a landline wifi router, but I figured a 3G data connection would never saturate the bandwidth of wifi in a mobile router situation. Bluetooth 2.1 with enhanced data rate EDR would have been sufficient. Bluetooth should be able to multitask. It only makes sense as an iMac can handle a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse simultaneously, and a ps3 can handle multiple Bluetooth controllers.

I'm curious about this, too. Maybe the GPS on either or both the iPad and iPhone does not depend on the 3G data signal.

The little gps arrow indicator near the battery indicator was lit. My guess is the gps signal originated from the ipad2's built in chip. I purposly got the wifi+3g model for this distinction over the wifi only model.

So glad so many criminals willing to drive up the price of my wireless data service.

Thanks thieves.

Gave up unlimited data on both iPad and iPhone

....and I don't regert it. Had iPad 1 with 3g unlimited and iPhone with unlimited data. Checked my usage for the last year and neither device ever went over 1 gig of data. I figured 4 gigs was more than enough, so I bought the iPad 2 wifi only and tether to iPhone when needed outside of the house. Figure I'm never without my iPhone anyway, so no problem. It also saves me money per month....the 4 gig tethering plan is cheaper than both unlimited plans.

BTW, I did some unofficial tests on the bluetooth vs. wifi tethering, and web pages definitely loaded faster when on wifi, so I use that setting.

Agreed. Not looking back.

I checked my past usage and I've never hit 4G in a month. Maybe I'm old school, but I do most of my streaming on my computer. I only use my mobile connection when I'm away from home or work.

It was $15 to upgrade to the 4G plan, but get this...I'm not a real heavy text message user (less than 100 texts per month), so I switched from unlimited text to the 1000 texts plan, which saved me $10. So, all in all, it only cost me an extra $5 bucks to turn on Hotspot.

Not really happy about the 5min timeout on SSID broadcast, though. Makes it very cumbersome to actually make use of the service cause I have to physically "turn it on" EVERY FRKN TIME I want to connect. This is especially nauseating in the car, where I'm not concerned with conserving battery life, cause my phone's plugged in and recharging. My passengers have to keep turning on my Hotspot again, and again. ugh.

One of my biggest issues with this is battery life for the phone you are connected too.

I don't use an iPhone so the point is moot to me. But that would be a big issue.

It turns off after 5 minutes even if you're actively using the connection?

Can those using the hotspot service explain this? My (perhaps limited) wifi understanding is that you do not need to have SSID broadcasting enabled to use the service. I think I have my home SSID broadcast turned off by default. SSID boradcast is only used for discovery, correct? Once your device 'knows' the network ID it can attach without having the SSID broadcast to everyone else out in the world. Do the hotspots time out and radio transmissions go to sleep after 5 minutes requiring a manual wake up? (!?)

I too have the unlimited plan and use less than 2GB of data each month, so I probably would be fine with a 4GB tether plan.

But here's my concern: while I only use less than 2GB with the iPhone, how do I know how much more data I'd use while tethering an iPad or perhaps a laptop? How do I know if 4GB will be sufficient or if I'll go over (and kick myself for giving up the unlimited plan)?

Know what I mean?

I sold my original iPad 1 along with the unlimited data. I never went over the 2-3 gigs. This time I went with the 64GB WiFi only since the iPad 2 only has a 3G antenna. Yesterday I placed my order with Verizon for a Samgung 4G LTE hotspot (5Gs for $50, or 10Gs for $80). I'm going for the 5 for $50, plus $10 for every additional gig. 5gigs is more than enough...

I picked that hotspot up this week and it's pretty awesome so far. I'm going to pull the trigger on canceling my unlimited iPad data this weekend I think.

Hate to say it but if you have an unlimited ipad data plan, those sims are selling for like $3-500 on ebay and craigs list. I would just sell it and then open up a new plan. Just a suggestion, everyone else taking advantage of it so you might as well also...

Dumped my Unlimited Plan for Tethering this morning.

:D

Because of this thread I pulled up my AT&T account and saw that over the last 6 months of my Unlimited cell phone plan I was only using 700 MB on average with 2 months being at 1 gig of data and Feb 2011 at 1.4 gigs.

I am not getting my moneys worth with the Unlimited plan. So I decided to dump it in favor of paying $15 more per month for Tethering and 4 gigs of Data.

For me nothing has changed but I gained the ability to Tether internet to my laptop and iPad.

All in all I am very happy this thread was created. It made me stop and really think about what I am getting out of my cell phone plan and what I am missing out on.

I can offset the extra $15 per month by recycling my water bottles at home or cutting corners somewhere else. Either way it's very worth it.

Thank you to everyone who posted in this thread.

-No regrets.

My husband and I changed our data plans tonight. We were both averaging about 300MB each month because we are on wifi almost exclusively.

We changed his old iPhone to just the 2GB plan and put the tethering plan on my iPhone 4. All in all it will cost us only $10 more per month. Totally worth it! (and a huge savings from buying a 3G iPad and paying for an iPad data plan)

We realized that this works really well for us also because my husband is always having work to do and several times a year we drive 10 hours (each way) back to SC to visit family. With the tethering plan, I can be on my iPad while he's driving and he can do work on his MBP while I'm driving. It was definitely the right choice for us!

Im convinced too. And the fact that you can switch on-off the tethering plan as you go, and the cost of it is pro-rated.

I gave up my unlimited data plan as well to tether. I was only using 1GB a month on my unlimited plan anyhow.

Did the same here recently as well. Looked at my past usage and since the iPhone 4 I have averaged about 500MB of usage. So pretty much a no brainer on the data side. My highest was almost 1GB back when I jailbroke the phone and torture tested the tethering option. I was able to save $15 a month dropping my unlimited plans on both the iPhone and iPad.

If you exceed 4 GB, it's not like they sock you with a lot of penalties.

They just add another $20.00, 2 GB bucket of data, automatically.

Not so bad.

For many of us not a bad deal in the end. That is how I looked at my savings by dropping the unlimited plans and going tethered. Owning 300+ movies and having a 32GB iPhone 4 and a 64GB iPad; with data management I figure that I can have some 20+ odd movies between the two devices and still have more music than I might be able to listen to on most any trip.

Everybody says that Bluetooth takes less battery power, but that it is slower than Wifi.

Have to test this out this weekend maybe. So far I tether via BT to my iPad. So far I find it as snappy as 3G on the iPad, and maybe a bit faster.

That is why I am happy to see a reasonable tether plan from ATT. I tried the jailbreak just before the update to IOS 4 after the iPhone 4 launch. Got tired of waiting for the new jailbreak; and the cat and mouse game that seems to be going on with Apple and jailbreakers.

So glad so many criminals willing to drive up the price of my wireless data service.

A little harsh there, but understand the feelings there. We are a gluttonous society here in the US IMHO. Just say the word "unlimited" and folks will try to take advantage of it.

More to the point, those folks that are treating unlimited 3G service as their replacement for a broadband home based replacement are hurting the rest of us with slower DL speeds.

+1 on your first comment.

Like I mentioned I will have to do some tests to see which tethering option is the best. I selected BT since it seemed easier and more secure than wifi. I use tethering for my iPad when at work during my lunch breaks and such. Nice to turn it on, and have the iPhone in my pocket. For my serious usage I might try the USB tethering option down the road.

Who is a criminal again? How exactly can you prove that THEY are the reason for driving up the price?

Limited band width on the 3G network requires something to give. And the easiest is to increase the price to limit usage. Sort of like the HOT lanes for our road ways (otherwise known as Lexus Lanes).

I work in the Tyson Corner area of Virginia; and will say that at certain times of the day 3G is VERY slow. I can only guess that it is for those that hog the network with their unlimited plans streaming Netflix, Pandora, and the like.

I too have the unlimited plan and use less than 2GB of data each month, so I probably would be fine with a 4GB tether plan.

Unfortunately iPad users don't have the same tools to look at their data usage as iPhone users do.

All I can offer is look at how much data you have been using on the iPhone. I probably use about the same or maybe in the worst case double that with the iPad. As for tethering to a laptop, that depends on how much data you might need to send.

Being a photographer, I do have lots of data that needs to be sent at times. But I made the choice to end my unlimited plans with the idea that there enough free wifi spots around if I need it.

The last JB that came out was, IMO, crap. I had nothing but random resets and a slow phone. It got to the point it couldn't use my phone with my cars Sync, I couldn't make a phone call because it was resetting or when I did use MyWi it would reset in the middle of a session. I tried to troubleshoot the problem but honestly, I started to get p!ssed off at the amount of time I was spending on it.

I called AT&T and asked questions about the tethering option. Turns out that because I have the unlimited family text plan all my phone calls to any mobile phone on any carrier would be free. I lowered my minute plan saved $20 and added the tethering.

I'm extremely happy with the tethering plan and how it works. I miss Lockinfo but I can use my phone again. So, I maybe retarded but, damn it, I'm a happy retard.

JMTC and change

Question for those that gave up the unlimited data plan and switched to the 4gb tethering plan: how much data total (iPhone AND iPad) are you using now?

Thanks.

I think it the personal hotspot works great on EDGE. If you're down on one device, you might as well be down on all of them.
