I still don't get what an A* is. In my day (yeah okay I sound like a right old bag now) an A grade was the highest. WTF is the point in an A*?

My daughter is busy revising for her GCSEs, her first one is French on Wednesday.

It's certainly keeping her busy, it's been days now since she nagged me for more money :)

I might be wrong, but was it the case that the powers that be felt that too many youngsters were getting 'A' grades – so, in response to this they created a higher 'A*' to make the kids who got really good grades stand out? Why they didn't just make it harder to get an 'A' in the first place is beyond me, though.

Reading this thread, it made me realise that it's 15 years since I sat my GCSEs. Yikes! Anyway, good luck to all our younger members about to take theirs.

I get all teary eyed with GCSE threads. If I actually tried in school I might be somewhere else now, well, a different uni :D but seriously. I didn't even bother with them but I walked away with a B in the 11 subjects I took, I even had a horrific migraine during my French exam! Silly regrets

Good luck to you all. My sister's currently taking her SATs so I think she has 1 or 2 years till the GCSE's kick in.

Good luck with them everyone.
Psychofreak, i feel your pain. The pressure of a good school is too much and most people (including me) underachieved.
Anyway, i got 1 A*, 8 As, 3 Bs but you should all do better than me.

My first AS level is on monday though. Studying:

A2
Maths
Further Maths
Physics
Electronics
General Studies

AS
Geography
iMedia

A* is awarded to the top (I think) 5% of the exam entrants :)

I could be wrong, according to my wife I usually am!!

im doing

Double Science

French

English Lang

Just to make it clear, GCSEs are a walk in the park, when you get round to A-Levels you'll realise that I'm being truthful. When I was taking mine a few years ago, I didn't like it when my older friends told me that GCSEs were so easy, a few months later I found out that they were right. I got 7 A*, 5 A.

TBF A-Levels were the first exams I had to put any non-negligable work towards.

I just did my Latin paper 1 yesterday....not perfect, but definitely A* standard :)

Maths tomorrow and Friday, but I'm completely confident - if I'm lucky and good on the day I might get 100%...

Ha! If yesterday means Tuesday, one of my mates did it too--was it the easy language paper? If so...did something about 'manus' come up? Apparently, it means 'band of men' as well as hand. Thats what he said anyway...

I did my latin last year and completely buggered up the easy language paper but got 97% in the hard one and then sort of 70-80% in the set texts...averaged out at an A....really kinda pleased with that considering the amount of work I did(n't do). Latin isn't too bad a subject...Classical Civilisation is worse...thats the price I have to pay for doing latin one year early an extra gcse in looking at Spartans shout 'This is Sparta'. That was all the revision I did, anyway-watch 300...good luck with it all...im guessing you have RS tomorrow at 9--that is if you do half course.

It was, and yes, I put 'group'...

Classical Civilisation is worse...
People have said to me its easy to get an A, but really hard to get an A*

I don't do RS

I know the feeling, I got 3A's, 8B's and a C and I should probably have done better. However, these days I don't really sweat it. Since then I got my 3 A levels and a degree from a red brick uni.

Good luck to those taking their exams at this time of year. I hope you do well so that I can live a good retirement off of your success :)

I've got my A levels coming up -

A2
Further Maths
Physics
Music
Computing
Maths (Already sat all the papers and got an A)
General Studies (Already sat all the papers and got an A)

I should get As in everything...although music is a bit dubious, and easily the hardest subject I do...hard as that may seem to believe!

Just need to make sure I get As in Physics and Computing to secure my place to study at Cambridge in 2008 (having a gap-yeary-scholarshipy year out next year)

Uber

EDIT: psychofreak I was in the same boat as you with pressure for GCSEs, but they're much easier than you think, you'll do ace! I got 9A*s and 2As, so it's quite possible!

We still do O Levels in this part of the world!

English
Literature in English
Chinese
History
Social Studies
Maths
Additional Maths
Biology

Did my Maths last year. All the rest this year.

I have English Lit on Tuesday, DT on Friday.. then all the others crammed into the 2 weeks after half term along with Maths C1 and C2.

I hate exams.. :(

Just saw this:

Right now, I'm going to a good school, so the pressure is on to get at least 8 A*s (and nothing below an A grade)...its not easy, and I don't believe anyone who says that O levels were harder...

Pretty much the same situation I am in too - as a school we always do very well, and we are therefore under pressure to uphold that..

I'm glad that I can see people preparing well for exams. When I did my GCSEs, I didn't revise at all. I pulled through well (A* in Music, AA in Science and A in maths) to carry on Maths, Physics and Music at college.

The laziness that I managed to pull through with at high school has really shown myself up in college now. I'm now averaging Ds and Es in college (whooops).

Moral of the story. Study and revise =]

P.S. Yes I've had a few.

Ok. So I just did my Maths papers yesterday...and I marked them in the ages I had remaining.

99% in the first one (Didn't know something)...and either 99% or 100% depending on the mark scheme for the second one :) (A question said 'hence', implying that the method should use the first section, but I got the right answer with a method that did not involve part a)

Core 1 soon-ish, but I'm sure I'll get an A in that.

Not too worried about English Lit on Tuesday, but I have to learn A LOT of Latin Poems by then.

Italian I'm sure I'll ace, but the others I will have to work for :(

Well done with your Maths.

AQA English Lit? Are you studying the Duffy/Armitage and pre 1914 poems?

Thankyou...

And no, my exams are all OCR or Edexcel, I'm not sure what my English Lit. is...

Romeo and Juliet, Hard Times and Pre-1914 poems for me

For English Language, I have The Old Man and the Sea...

Wasn't that the last question of 4H..and you had to use prime factors or something? I think, if we are doing the same papers (Edexcel IGCSE) that you didnt have to use the part a) answer....well noone did in my set and we're not too bad at maths in my set...well not bad enough for all of us to get it wrong.

Probably just rambling and a compeltely different paper and your going to have a look on your face of 'What the actually f*ck is this nutta on about?'.

Till then, toodlepip.

Tom.
