why would you compare with the 2012 model... they updated the air in 2015. and yes, it’s faster, but it should be A LOT faster cause intel bumped the 15W processors to quad-core. unfortunately Apple decided to change to the low power processors. ughhhhhh
yes, to keep that 12-13 hours battery life with that "retina" panel, and to keep it as cold as possible and not as hot as possible like they did with the i9 15" MBP

I was planning on getting the Air but after seeing those benchmarks, I think last year's MacBook is a better deal. I don't need 2 USB C ports and TB3 seems like overkill with such a weak processor.
at least wait to update the keyboard...

The benchmarks are okay in comparison to old Airs, but Apple doesn't release this thing in a vacuum. Really this is a downgrade in class of CPU, along with a price bump. All the other 'upgrades' are rather perfunctory... and doesn't really improve on what made the Air great in the first place.

Compare this to Windows ultrabooks in the $1000-$1200 range and there are plenty of nice thin designs with quad core cpus and quality screens.

I personally couldn't care less about the CPU power because I know very well that 95% of my workloads are not CPU-constrained. I'd take 12-hour battery life over a quad-core CPU any day of the week.

For what it's worth, I also made peace with the fact that the legacy ports are gone forever.

However, as somebody who had a 2016 MBP inflicted on him for 2 years, I'm scared stiff of that goddamn keyboard.

but none will have 12 hours of battery life...I think this is where Apple made the choice for the cpu...we place an quad core cpu in this chassis with 7-8 hours or we place the dual 8th gen cpu and we keep the old 12 hours battery usage?!
The best thing for apple to do, was to let the users chose when they BTO the MBA and choose from dual core vs quad core

The 2018 Air Geekbench scores that were posted make it a perfectly good Mac for the vast majority of people that will buy it. It’s more powerful than the highest spec’ed 2017 12” MacBook and about the same as the nTB MBP.

Also - everyone on this thread should know that 90+% of people that will buy this Air have no clue what Geekbench even is. If those scores matter that much to you, you should be getting a Pro anyway. Keep saving.

You have the choice already. Take the MBA if you value battery life over performance or take the MBP if you value performance over battery.

I also think they will update the ntb-MBP with quad core CPUs as soon as suitable chips become available since they didn’t drop it from the line up. They’ll probably increase the price though.

It would be silly to offer a CPU upgrade that reduces the battery by 1/3.

And we saw the MBP throttle and barely handle the quad. How are they supposed to sustainably handle the quad in an air?

nope...on MBP you have to go with the touchbar MBP...and those for people that want an 15W too much, in price or even in power
Like i said, since Apple used to offer 15W cpu for the Air they should at least offer as an BTO...since the nTB is no longer updated and has a much higher grade doomed to fail keyboard, so its clear Apple will no longer update the 999 air and the nTB MBP

It varies according to individual usage.. I would have preferred Whiskey Lake 15W CPU maybe even underclocked if TDP was a constraint but since MBA has fan, so shouldn't be an issue. Whiskey Lake has better features compared to Amber Lake so that would have made it more future proof -- that's one thing I look for since I don't replace my laptop every year or two just for new CPU. Also, most of the time I use it plugged in, so battery life isn't a big factor, I would have preferred more capable CPU for occasional tasks when needed for which MBP could be much more than needed and expensive.
The current configuration, maybe for $999 but now I will wait for next upgrade to MBA or nontouch MBP
