DVD playback

ATI has waaaay better iDCT hardware acceleration then Nvidia does, it is expected that in the full on G4's, there would be better hardware support for DVD, however you would have to wait until february to find that out. I run the Radeon 7500, the support for dual monitor is seemless. As far as drivers are concerned, they are stable. So, if you want a better multimedia chipset for a hundred less, go with the Radeon 7500, its performance is somewhere between that of a Geforce2 ultra and a Geforce3, most likely a Geforce3 Ti200.

Okay later kids.

Personally, I get a 20% discount on hardware for being an ADC member so I'll definitely be getting the Dual 1-GHz! ($2399!) Can't wait!

Thanks for the info. Also, what is ADC and how do I become a member!!??!!

radeon 8500?

I couldn't find radeon 8500 cards for mac at cdw.com. Could you post the url? I'm debating on getting a GF3 or the 8500. Anyone have any advice?

It's the Apple Developer Connection. It costs $500 to join at the Select level (there's a higher level which is $3000 IIRC) and you normally don't get the hardware discount until you renew for the second year. That $500 gets you early access to OS updates, developer tech support, OS libraries, access to Apple's compatibility labs, things like that.

If you're not a developer, you won't really get too much out of the program, unless you're willing to pay for early access to OS updates (and Apple usually doesn't give Select members early access to 10.x updates, only 10.1.x updates) and for that 20% discount on hardware.

The Radeon 8500...

...beats the GF3 and probably the GF3 Ti, but it probably won't beat the full scale GF4. TruForm is better than anything nVidia has....

I have seen that the Geforce 4Mx is better than Geforce 2 (twice faster). I have taken this info by the Macwelt.de site.

In any case I don't like this new G4 line.

hardcore gamers?

Lol..that's exactly what I did.. got hold of a couple of, er.. "free" P-III 1Ghz, and thought F*** this! I can build a stonking Quake 3 Arena platform for very little money.. which is exactly what I did!

Dual 1Ghz P-III
Geforce 2 Pro GTS
512 Mb RAM
40gb Disk
Win2K server

Copied over my Mac Quake Files using w2k Mac file services and downloaded the 1.31 update for PC, bobs yer uncle :)

But I used to do everything on my Mac and I STILL want to do everything on my Mac, so its a Dual G4 1ghz or G5 with Geforce 3 or Geforce 4 (NOT mx) and Quake goes straight back on the Mac :)
plus all those cool new games like Doom and Quake 4 coming soon... God I sound like a right lame-ass .. hehe :)

I personally think q3 sucks as a game, well it was fun the first month. It is fine as a universal benchmark test. although some games that use the q3 engine are kickass, like medal of honor and wolf is pretty cool. anyway, I can't wait till war3, heh.

Quake 3 rocks! Better than Unreal (maybe the name suggests why...)

Anyway, why is apple gonna launch a low scaled down version of the GeForce 4? To me that just doesn't seem logical... I hope Apple the specs apple has given us are from "Beta" cards, and that the real cards will woop my GF3, and all the ATI's back to *%&!
