Keep in mind people, and plenty of Apple and Google engineers bought Teslas and Rivians despite them having no CarPlay.

Maybe it's not as important as people think? If you put together a decent system to let me listen to music or navigate, I can somewhat be placated. With that said most car infotainment systems looked like absolute ass in the 2000s/2010s. The Toyota one even in 202x cars is still an eyesore from a 10+ year old system that looks and functions like crap.

I, like so many other replies, won't even consider a new car without CarPlay (not that I'd ever buy a GM). I've actually replaced the stock radios in both my cars with models that have CarPlay because that wasn't a common option when they were purchased. It's one of the only non-negotiable things I would look for in a car.

I can’t tell if this is another manufacturer trying to drive some subscription model of something - which who knows how that will go - or if it’s another company feeling that data is more valuable than actual paid stuff. Canceling CarPlay in favor of a system that allows them to collect data on the eta you drive. Sounds like how Pokémon go is trying to step back all remote gaming in favor of gathering data of where people move and go. All attempts to collect data on people and monetize that data. Also both backed by Google….

Not the smartest move GM, let's exclude the millions upon millions of the Apple iPhone ecosystem. I being one, and many others like me, no Car Play, not buying your car, that simple. All those potential sales immediately crossed off the list. Of course, I have not purchased an American made car ever, and never will until they match the design, engineering, and quality, offered elsewhere.
How long before the government intervenes and demands that carmakers facilitate CarPlay, Google, or any other mobile interface?

That seems a weird decision. I understand the executive temptations to roll your own, but why? Doing so could isolate a large chunk of potential customers.
Plus you can still roll your own and offer CarPlay. I can’t imagine they’ll save any more than a couple hundred dollars per vehicle. But at the same time, it probably wasn’t a random decision. I suspect there’s not an outsized share of Apple users driving GM vehicles.

This is why they're doing it. Not because it is a better user experience, but because they will make more money through a) forcing car owners to subscribe to their proprietary services and b) selling data about the users.

No thank you.

They outlined their plans to increase subscription revenues a couple years back. Didn't image it'd mean getting rid of CarPlay and Android Auto though

GM Details Plan to Double its Revenue, Drive Even Higher Margins
  • Unlocking growth in EVs through the Ultium hardware platform and leadership in software and services through the Ultifi platform
  • Planning to double annual revenues and expand EBIT-adjusted margins to 12 to 14 percent
  • Leading the race to commercialize AVs
  • Launching new businesses to add customers and diversify revenues
  • Increasing investment in EV charging

This seems odd. Even reading the source Reuters article it just doesn’t sound right. Android Automotive (not to be confused with Android Auto… their naming conventions suck) absolutely supports projection, which is all that CarPlay and Android Auto are. So this would be a 3rd platform? Not wanting a dependency on a cell phone… like it isn’t the fact that everyone will have one. They want subscription money if they are, in fact, purposely removing functionality.

Got my first chance to test out wireless CarPlay recently in a test vehicle. No matter how I tried, I could not get my iPhone to connect with my WiFi hot spot I had in the vehicle, because the phone insisted on connecting to the car via Wifi. Mind you, there was no cell signal where we were on my phone's carrier, but was on the hot spot (different carrier). The result was CarPlay navigation was completely useless, as was any other function of my phone that required Internet connectivity. In a second week of testing the same prototype vehicle, I did not set up CarPlay. I did use Bluetooth to play music through the car's systems. I'd rather have a built-in nav that works, than a CarPlay nav that fails.
