The next version of Ford's Sync software will also be based on Google's software, but Ford is at least smart enough to not ditch CarPlay and Android Auto for people who want to use it and have signed on to roll out next-generation CarPlay at some point.

This is going to be annoying for rental cars though, since GM sells huge volumes to rental fleets.

Got my first chance to test out wireless CarPlay recently in a test vehicle. No matter how I tried, I could not get my iPhone to connect with my WiFi hot spot I had in the vehicle, because the phone insisted on connecting to the car via Wifi. Mind you, there was no cell signal where we were on my phone's carrier, but was on the hot spot (different carrier). The result was CarPlay navigation was completely useless, as was any other function of my phone that required Internet connectivity. In a second week of testing the same prototype vehicle, I did not set up CarPlay. I did use Bluetooth to play music through the car's systems. I'd rather have a built-in nav that works, than a CarPlay nav that fails.
Help me understand...

Why even turn on (and pay for) the Wifi hotspot when you have an iPhone?

Why not plug it in? Better charging. Better fidelity of music. Fewer failure points (things that can go wrong and your phone doesn't have to switch Wifi networks).

How often is your built-in nav updated? Does it provide real-time traffic? Siri integration?

Just curious...everyone's use case is different.

I actually get it. Make the move for electric vehicles. If they want tight vehicle integration, they may need to bypass CarPlay. Tesla does it so well that I don’t even notice. The one thing Apple will need is integrated charge mapping and route planning specific to electric cars with detailed information as to which chargers are being used and if they work (charging sux outside of Tesla). It also needs to know the state of charge in the vehicle to automatically route you to a charger if running low or while on an extended trip. There is so much data apple will need from each electric car and I don’t see any OEM giving that amount of detailed data to apple UNLESS the car companies don’t have a top notch tech department (most don’t) and they want to off-load and basically give apple their customers. This is why Tesla doesn’t have CarPlay or android. Since charging is so bad outside of Tesla, I don’t see them giving a good experience with electric cars. ICE cars fit well with CarPlay but not so much electric vehicles for that reason alone.

Keep in mind people, and plenty of Apple and Google engineers bought Teslas and Rivians despite them having no CarPlay.

Maybe it's not as important as people think? If you put together a decent system to let me listen to music or navigate, I can somewhat be placated. With that said most car infotainment systems looked like absolute ass in the 2000s/2010s. The Toyota one even in 202x cars is still an eyesore from a 10+ year old system that looks and functions like crap.
If there had been a decent alternative to Tesla (Performance, charging infrastructure, Autopilot), I would have chosen one with CarPlay, it is very important, to me, I wouldn't have bought any other brand without it.

We are on our second Volt and when the time comes for replacement (and we were thinking GM), if this happens we simply will not consider a GM product. Period. They lose sale, service income and still never get any subscription income.

You must be doing something wrong.
I prefer wired CarPlay over Wireless. It keeps my phone charged and there’s no interference.

Not just Carplay. But Android Auto also. Those two combined equal a huge mistake. Especially when these itemss have become about 95% standard.

General Motors (GM) will phase out Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in its vehicles starting this year, shifting to a built-in infotainment system co-developed with Google (via Reuters).

CarPlay-Phone-Call.jpg

GM owns Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, and GMC in the United States. It will stop offering Apple CarPlay and Android Auto starting with the 2024 Chevrolet Blazer, which goes on sale this summer. The company plans to continue offering Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in its combustion models, which are expected to be phased out by 2035 in favor of electric vehicles. Owners of existing GM cars that currently have Apple CarPlay and Android Auto will be able to continue using the systems.

GM has worked on infotainment software with Google since 2019 that tightly integrates with other vehicle systems such as navigation and GM's Super Cruise driver assistant. Future GM infotainment systems will offer applications such as Spotify and Audible, and iPhone users will still be able to listen to music and make phone calls using Bluetooth. EV buyers will also get access to Google Maps and Google Assistant at no extra cost for a period of eight years.

The move is expected to help the automaker gather more data about how consumers drive and accelerate a strategy to incentivize vehicle-related digital subscription services.
I don’t see this as a good move. I have my iPhone as a huge part of my daily life. In fact I paid my own money to outfit my work vehicle with wireless CarPlay because of how integral it is. I know MANY people like me. And I just can’t see the reason to reduce the offerings instead of enhance them.

Plus, I already pay a subscription for stuff, I don’t need more subscriptions FOR THE SAME STUFF.

I will simply not buy another car without CarPlay. So GM has excluded me and my family as customers. This coming from someone who has purchased 4 GM cars over the last 10 years.

Agreed.

I have a Mazda 6, love the car, but would not own it without Apple CarPlay due to their UI.

On the other hand, my wife has a Tesla. Again, love the car. The UI is much better so the only thing I miss is long road trips using Waze on CarPlay. However, I overcome this using Waze separately on the wireless charger just below the Tesla’s display above. I think that is why Tesla cants their wireless phone chargers forward so that the phone can be used as a second screen while it is connected using Bluetooth. 🤷

Glad we have CarPlay on both our cars. Will never purchase a vehicle without it.
I suspect a lot of potential GM purchasers will go elsewhere. Unless they really like google getting even more about them.

2035 GM is making only EVs? I don't think that's a good business plan. In New England its more economical to drive a combustion engine since our electric rates are so high.
