The fact that this “hidden” ability is miles ahead of the more accessible (but still confusing) Image Playground is such backwards programming

So Apple could better have used their programmers for solving bugs in iOS 18 than writing code for image playgrounds which aren’t as good as with ChatGPT and dall.e?
I'm guessing it's something the programmers cobbled together to clear their minds from trying to replace the Siri's Abby someone... brain.

This is someone's pet project that management got hold of and released to appease the masses.

Humanity could do so many world changing and inspiring things with the computational power in our pockets and the cloud combined with the magic of AI. But that’s what will end up doing: stupid mindless emojis.

Why is generative AI only able to render chubby faced cats? I haven’t seen one that was able to generate a photo of a more narrow faced cat.
Refine your prompts. Be as specific as possible. If you don't like the result, tell it what you would like it to do differently. You can also ask it to make the image realistic, like vector-based art, or in the style of any fairly well-known artist. Granted, sometimes it doesn't respond well to prompts (it's bad with numbers) but in time it will become more and more accurate.

You can also ask it, "Hey DALL-E, tell me what you need to know in order for you to render a skinny-faced cat." It will write a prompt for you:

To render a skinny-faced cat, I need details like:
  1. Facial Features – Should the cat have a sharp, angular face, high cheekbones, or a narrow snout?
  2. Breed Influence – Should it resemble a Siamese, Oriental Shorthair, or Sphynx (breeds known for slim faces)?
  3. Fur Type & Color – Should it have short sleek fur, long fur, or be hairless? What color should it be?
  4. Eyes & Ears – Should it have large, almond-shaped eyes, wide-set ears, or a specific expression?
  5. Body Type – Should it be slender and elegant or just have a skinny face with a more standard body?
  6. Background & Style – Do you prefer a plain, artistic, or realistic setting? Should it be cartoonish or photorealistic?

Let me know how specific you want it!

It can... it can even make a real looking cat. Apple's Image playground on the other hand is named appropriately because it's nothing but childish kid crap and does a terrible job. Well, all of Apple's in house AI crap, which is crap, does a terrible job.

For what purpose?

It's a genuine question (truly)
For instance, what will you do with this functionality?

(I'm asking because I can't figure out the point of it)
1. Personalization & Aesthetic
Profile Pictures – Use for WhatsApp, Instagram, Discord, or other social media.
Phone Wallpapers – Even though it’s small, you can tile or stretch it for a cool background.
App Icons – Customize your iPhone or Android home screen with unique app icons.
2. Fun & Creativity
Digital Stickers – Use them in messaging apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, or iMessage.
Collages & Mood Boards – Combine them with other images for creative projects.
Story & Post Graphics – Use them as unique elements in Instagram or Snapchat stories.
3. Gaming & Virtual Life
Gaming Avatars – Use as a profile picture in games like Steam, Xbox, or PlayStation.
Custom Skins & Icons – If you play games that allow user-generated content (like Minecraft or Roblox), you can modify them for custom textures.
AI Art NFTs – If you’re into digital collectibles, you can experiment with selling or trading unique images.
4. Organization & Productivity
Folder Icons – Set custom icons for phone folders or computer files.
Contact Photos – Assign personalized images to friends and family in your contact list.
Journal or Note Decorations – Use them in digital planners or note-taking apps like Notion or OneNote.
5. Social & Sharing
GIFs & Memes – Turn your AI images into fun GIFs or meme templates.
Small Gifts – Print as stickers or mini prints for friends.
Reddit & Forum Avatars – Use as a unique avatar on online communities.

Serious question....people actually use this feature? There's no situation in my life where I need a pic of a cat reading a book or a frog in a space suit.
We frequently use Image Playgrounds to create unique images for our newsletter targeted at Gen Alpha and Gen Z mentees in our academic program. These images are more vibrant and engaging for our kids than standard stock photography. Additionally, we utilize the Photos integration to produce specific artwork featuring several of our mentors. We’re open to using anything that improves engagement with our folks 😁

Why not both? AI is also being used for a lot of useful things

If not logged in to ChatGPT, is the connection private? Is it training on anything from this particularly connection if enabled?

Image playground is really more a tool for apps to use. For example, Dark Noise uses it to generate icons for custom sounds you create.

To be clear, there’s really no reason to bypass AI and use ChatGPT, which is a cloud service and not private. There are better specific AI image generators like Draw Things that run 100% on device, and don’t have the limitations that the cloud services do.

The rich idiots can keep their Rothko.🤨

This is much much better than Apple's Image Playground. Better to use this instead. However there might be limits if one is using a free ChatGPT plan.

Apple is very mum about these questions. There must be some benefit for Open AI to let Apple redirect all Apple users to Chat-GPT. What’s in it for Open AI besides more servers to power for all the extra requests?
