Why would anyone make an appt if they can get a walk in one? Bob and Sally should make one before they drive 2.5 hours to the store. Apple could do it the Samsung way and not offer any appointments or service.
Your samsung analogy is dumb as samsung has no stand alone stores, at least that I have ever seen.

It's well documented ALL over Apple's website, and you can call the store beforehand.

Obviously you two have no clue about the average consumer. They have an issue, they go to the store they bought the device to try and solve that issue. They don't look on the internet to see what the store is going to make them do before they can be seen.... they just go. My mother isn't going to go online to ensure she needs to book an appointment so she can be seen, she's going to go, show up and be told to go F herself. Not a huge deal as she is about 10 minutes from the apple store but for someone that drove a long way it's a problem. Of course now they know they need to make an appointment for their next trip but they are a bit buggered this go around.

You used to be able to walk in and be seen and that system seemed to work well for the customers (as well as making an appointment), who gives a rat's ass if it's easier for apple store employees? They are here to serve us not the other way around. One dedicated employee to serve walk in tech issues isn't to much to ask IMHO.

Last time I was in the Apple Store they shot down three walk-in's in the span of 20 minutes. This was on a Wednesday afternoon. They gave them the choice to make an appointment for later or come back some other time.

Apple makes it exceedingly easy to make a Genius Bar appointment.

Especially if you go online.

1) Download the Apple Store App to your phone. Follow the prompts.

2) From your computer go to Apple.com

If either of these is too difficult or unsuitable, you're working even harder to complain.

Once you arrive & check in, look around you'll notice you're not Apples only customer. If you must wait I doubt that it's the first time in your life. The person ahead of you may have a problem that takes longer than the default time each appointment is allowed.

Then there's the concept most adults understand. It can be summed up in a word: patience.

Does that mean something like the ability to defer instantaneous gratification!!??

You must be mad....

That system used to work because less people were visiting the Apple Stores. Now, it's a different story.

For fun, lets say they do staff an extra person for walk in customers. The problem is that, as already mentioned in this thread, a 'quick' I phone swap can take 20-50 minutes... enough time for (at least) another customer to walk in. That's not even going into what happens at lunch time when a bunch of people walk in at once or from 5:30-7PM when they get a few dozen stopping in after work.

For all intents, they likely already have a few extra Geniuses on staff for walk ins and overflow, but it gets to a point (quickly) where try simply can't keep up.

That said, more often than not, Im able to schedule an apt with a half hour of walking in. It's just during weekends, holidays, or right after a big product launch where I have to schedule one days in advance.

For starters iPhones have become increasingly more popular so the stores would be more busier than years ago.. Just because you 'didnt know' about appointments that's gonna make you have more priority over someone that has booked. Let's say if I pre-ordered a new product with limited supply and Bob and Sally walks into the store on launch day and didn't know about the "pre-order" they will get the product instead of me??

No wonder from previous posts, appointments are not always on time, its people like you who walk into shops and expect service there and then, without caring about other people who have booked and made the time to arrange the appointment.

And what he means about the Samsung analogy, your luckily enough, apple provide the service in their shops for your phone to be replaced. Try getting your Samsung replaced over the phone or on a webpage.

Making an appointment is so easy you may as well go that route.

Three days ago I made an appointment at 9:50am because the speaker on my i5 wasn't working anymore. I went in and they took a look at it in the back and replaced the speaker module. I walked out the door by 10:15am.

Easy.

PS: Some of the posts here really makes me wish MacRumors did not remove the 'down arrow' option on rating posts.

Making an appointment may be easy, but it's not always appropriate or convenient.

My lock/power button is broken. Doesn't work. But, because I need a genius appointment to get it seen to, I will be walking around with a phone for the next week that I can't lock, simply because although I am free all day today and tomorrow, and could do anytime Tuesday - I have to wait until next Friday for the next appointment I can make.

There is literally not one single appointment available in any of the 3 stores I can get to (including 2 of the UK's biggest) before Thursday am. So, even if I could drop everything and get there for 11am on Thursday, I'd still be more than 5 full days without a working phone.

It also won't take a "genuis" to press the button a few times and say "yes, that really is broken, very sorry, here is a replacement".

I have learned my lesson about making an appointment before I go into the Apple store. I went there on a Sunday thinking that no one was going to be there. I was wrong. The place was packed and I had to schedule an appointment for two hours later. Never again. I always schedule an appointment now through the Apple Store app. When you make an appointment, you are in and out in no time. I am very pleased with the customer service there.

Oh I just love Apple, guess who just took another trip to the Apple Store today? To get another replacement.. I have had the worst of luck with these iPhone 5's, I'm now on my 3rd device and praying to god this one works for more then a month.

On the bright side, this appointment they took me 5 mins early.

I feel like it's out of my control.. I put a case on my phone, and go on with my day. Every receipt (I just looked) they have marked by my phone as "Like New".. Guess it's just the luck of the draw.
