Well I'm back, the genius spotted it straight away and said it was something to do with the case. He swapped it for another new one and this one is perfect. We compared the two and there was something definatey off about the first one, the colour of the case was slightly different, the front panel was more reflective and completely uneven and the new one is heavier.

Heavier, huh?

LMAO:D

Yes, they added some extra parts and weights inside the new replacement:D
Now feels and weights great.

I have a Logitech bluetooth adapter that actually came with a steel weight screwed down inside to make it feel more "quality." This is a well known phenomenon and most people, including me, take it out as it improves bluetooth reception slightly.

There are probably more things out there with added weights to give perceived "quality."

I dont know, that kinda goes against the whole smartphone perception though.
For some reason every year or release cycle it has to be a lighter and thinner device.
Not heavier with added weight to feel like better quality.

I will have to admit that the first time I held my new iPad Air after holding a regular iPad, the Air felt cheap to me. Now I would never feel that way so the perception does not last long.

Same here.
But now I like the lighter iPad better:)

An S class Mercedes sedan has several hundred pounds of crap devoted to sound deadening and to help give it that "thunk" feel over bumps. Most people perceive that as quality, when really it's just decreasing performance by adding tar. ;)

I am very fond of my ML350's quietness and ride going down the road. That crap devoted to sound deadening is quite desirable in my opinion.

Which I guess proves the point that "quality" is not really definable. Lots of people think the iPhone is a cheap piece of junk. Others feel it is the opposite. Which has more quality: a Toyoya that never breaks down but drives like mush or a BMW that drives marvelously when not in the shop being repaired? A delicate iPhone or a waterproof Android phone?

That happened to me the first and only time I've had to take a device into the Genius Bar. Luckily I noticed that the replacement was faulty and took it back to the store about 30 minutes after my appointment. They were really good and swapped it out for another. I didn't even have to wait.

This. They're now allotted more than 15 minutes per appointment. Just don't be greedy and let the genius work with other customers while you inspect the replacement.

And btw. Apple doesn't distribute refurbished devices. They're remanufactured and every replacement device goes through QA vs production devices that get random QA inspections.

The only source for refurbished (repaired, cleaned & tested) iPhones is via 3rd party sales such ad eBay, craigslist, etc. Or from carrier insurance such as Asurion.

Close, but not quite.

Mobile appointments are still scheduled for 10 minutes.
Mac appointments are 15 minutes.

Coming soon when booking an appointment online it will ask you what the issue is, and that will dictate the length of the appointment, however its not live, YET ;)

Ask for an iPhone with an orange circle dot if you're getting it replaced (those devices have been specifically inspected by a human)
