Lol, 70% of the users on these forums know more than the "geniuses" at Apple. What he told that customer is complete bs. He didn't have the correct answer, so used somewhat of his common sense to give them a stupid answer.

Just saying. :apple:

Yeah I agree there. I have friend who never used a Mac in his life and got a job at an Apple store in Georgia as a"Genius". He was recommending Alienware to people who wanted a cool looking laptop that would play games while at the Apple Store! :O

Since they're "notebooks", can I toss it on my desk or sit on it?
The name notebook in no way implies you should do either of those things to a Macbook.

Everyone in this thread seems to be wrong anyway. Apple neither refers to them as laptops nor notebooks, they are exclusively referred to as Macbooks.

Does Geek Squad get periodic training? I mean if you're just comparing the support aspect of it, they're more or less the same but I'll give it the Genius Bar because they have periodic and updated training on all Apple products. What an employee does with that training will vary. You'll get some Geniuses that really know what they're talking about, other times you'll get a not so knowledgable Genius. I'm sure it would be the same for the Geek Squad.

That's just my two cents.

A while back I read an article in one of the major computer magazines comparing the Geek Squad to the Genius Bar and the Genius bar won. They asked each 5 or 6 technical questions and compared their answers to see who gave the most accurate reply. I don't remember which mag it was but it was a pc mag, not a Mac one.

Google "sarcasm"

MacBooks are MacBooks, MacBook Pros are MacBook Pros, MacBook Airs are MacBook Airs. You are currently viewing the "Notebooks" forum. Go to Apple's website... they're called "Notebooks."

You should be 100% positive before telling one person they're wrong, let alone "everyone in this thread.":)

Everyone in this thread gave their perspective. Come on buddy... :)

You follow their website, I follow Apple tech/spec sheets and their corporate knowledge base. We've had numerous training on how to position Mac's and the "notebooks" as you call it are "portables" to Apple.

I only pointed this out because he's an Apple employee and he has access to all the documents and SGT's that clearly state that whenever referring to whatever related, it's a portable. If this were a customer who doesn't know any better, fine but as an employee who has this knowledge is telling customers something else, I think we can jump on that person in this thread.

It's not a big deal but like I said in my first post, felt like being an ass tonight. :D

so the employee isn't allowed to call it a notebook, but apple's website is?

also i find it hilarious that you're all "you read the proletariate literature, i get my knowledge from elite source X" as if apple actively maintains this divide, giving people like you the upper hand in internet debates. gold.

@suckatcomputers, in the spirit of modesty, i think maybe i am not understanding what the complaint with the 'genius' was. my interpretation was that the customer was complaining about noise (fan noise?) and the genius was troubleshooting by explaining that apple's portable computers (for you, iLog.Genius!) run coolest when on flat hard surfaces, so for example using them on one's lap will make the fans run more often and louder to try to compensate.

^ Exactly. That's what he should've said.

He was complaining about the SMS. I just thought it was a hilarious that the Genius gave that answer, probably as a scapegoat.

Again, my point being, I've never heard anybody call laptops "notebooks." Most people DON'T say, "Hey, bring your notebook over." Even if we made the transition, notebooks (I can't do it - LAPTOPS!) will be carried around from place to place and set on whatever surface is comfortable for us at the time.
