Will the base model from 2015 be able to stream 4k videos on youtube without lag? I wanna buy the macbook because it's design. All i use the computer for is to surf the web and watch movies. nothing more.

Absolutely. I just tested on mine. Works perfectly fine (that screen is sooo beautiful). Those who experience lag likely experience it for one of two reason. Rare case of having a faulty unit or most likely a slow internet connection.

I think for the most part, casual users are unlikely to see any deal breakers regarding system performance between the 2015 and 2016 models. I am waiting for some detailed reviews of the 2016 version as I'm always tempted by 'new' versions but have to admit, Im secretly pretty happy that there is little to make me upgrade this year. Therefore, Im thinking of buying applecare for my Macbook base model 2015 and enjoy 1-2 years more before I see a version that would make sense upgrading to.

Glad you mentioned Applecare. Is it still worth it for the newer MacBooks? I bought one for the iMac because the cost to benefit ratio was obviously much better because desktop Applecare is cheaper and the computer is much more expensive. On the new Laptop, I'm not sure the value is there. Buying it with a good credit card already extends the warranty by one year... so one extra year of coverage for $250?

What are your thoughts on this?

Thanks! I'll buy it as soon as i sell my iMac then. Will get the 2016 version since my job have these discounts for different stores and the price on the new model got down to pretty much the same as the old one!

That's a sweet discount!

But, I would caution you about replacing an iMac with the new Macbook. First, the lack of ports may be a problem. Second, the iMac will blow the Macbook out of the water in terms of performance. Games or any other heavy lifting are out of the question, for the most part. On the other hand, the new Macbook is the perfect companion to the full-powered iMac... I would say keep the iMac and get the Macbook as companion. That's just my opinion, of course. Only you can assess your needs.

Well as I said in my first post all i do is surf the web and watch movies/youtube on the computer. Nothing more nothing less. I don't play any games at all or anything that would require performance. The most demanding thing i'll do on the computer is to have multiple tabs open and perhaps playing 1080p movies in VLC. Having both an imac and macbook would be overkill! I also only use the USB ports on my imac to charge stuff. My phone and wireless headphones for e.g. But I can get something nice and use my TV as a charging hub instead.

Awesome, sounds like you've got a good plan. I think you'll love the new Macbook!

Im not sure what your situation is but since I'm eligible for education discount I get it for something like 180 dollars (I haven't gone back to check this but its in that region). So in my case, since I bought not long after release, it was 1300 for the macbook so an additional 180 for an extra 2 years of peace of mind.

Ive only ever had minor issues during the first year warranty (and must say not with this macbook lol) but Im happy every time and have always left the store happy and issue fixed or taken care of (with an iPad, a minor issue with battery I found the next software update fixed but they gave me a new iPad before it was released!) So whilst I have never actually claimed during applecare, I know the service is great if I need it. I only apply on devices at risk of damage (apple watch and my new iPhone are on applecare +) whilst I'm considering for my macbook because it was such a significant purchase.

I used to get the discount... all six years of college! Now I have to pay full price. Applecare is great, no question about it. Apple once replaced a two year old laptop with a brand new and upgraded model. I was floored. Long story but after several fixes, someone from Apple called me. She said "your experience isn't what we expect for our customers, so if that's okay with you, we'll send you a new model" and I thought... really? If it's okay with me? LOL

So, I like Applecare. I have it on my phone for the reasons you mentioned. I guess with the discount, it's probably worth it. If only one things goes wrong it will pay for itself. Than again, I have the first two years covered. That kind of diminishes the value for me.

After some deliberation, I did as well. I opted for the 2015 1.2Ghz with 512GB drive for $120 less than the base 2016 model. I figured twice the storage will be more important over the spec bump. Plus the savings are substantial.

First time buying refurbished. Anyone wants to share their experience with buying refurbished?

I also figured that I could return it, if not satisfied.

Pretty much every Mac I've purchased for the last 8 years has been a refurb from the Apple Store. All have performed beautifully - flawlessly.

My 2009 iMac 24" Core 2 Duo...is still functional! But, I've retired it and keep it as a 'backup' in case something catastrophic occurs on my new (2015) iMac, or 2013 rMBP 15". So, that is a quantity of three computers over the last 8 years. Oh, actually, there was a fourth - a 13" mbp (classic) 2011 - which I kept until 2013 when I bought the 15" as a laptop replacement. That 13" was also a refurb from the Apple Store.

Since they offer the same 1 year warranty as any new product, I don't see any danger, and I like saving at least 15% off the bat.

oh ok. just saw it said Macs and assumed it was all encompassing thanks for the correction

With some people returning 2015 rMB purchases made in the last 30 days, I suspect there will be a lot of refurbished at the Apple Store. I've seen the 1.1/256 for $929 and the 1.3/512 for $1319. The latter is $430 less than the same configuration for the new version. Is the 2016 model $430 faster? In the real world I doubt it.

I think you'd have to consider the m5 or m7 model if you're looking for significant performance gains over the 2015 and 2016 base models. So its more like 500+ dollars extra. Im still waiting on detailed reviews but unfortunately a lot of the early reviews seem to be the m5 version.. maybe it is because the base models are so close in performance :/

For me I'm more than happy with the performance of my 2015 version but I'm still interested in what real world battery runtime increases there are with the new models

The big thing for me is I need to run the Macbook at 1440*900 (I cannot possibly run 1280*800) and I am very curious how the new model handles daily scaling. I know the original would have dropped frames when running scaled.

Can someone confirm that the 2015 rMB really dropped frames when scaled to 1440x900?
