If I were you, just wait for next year's version. Cause you would be uber-pissed if there was a major upgrade you wanted for the iPhone if you got a 3GS this Christmas. [Example: I get an iTouch Christmas of 2007, what happens in return in January of 2008? A Twenty dollar firmware upgrade.]

I view upgrading to 3G and GPS (from the orginal to 3G) more significant upgrades compared to a lot of upgrades from the 3G to the 3G S. Just because there are more new features doesn't make them more substantial. A lot of the features in the 3G S are really nice to have (voice control, faster processor, new screen, etc) but adding 3G and GPS seems to carry more weight (for me).

People that tend to say that the 3Gs is a minor upgrade have NEVER used one. I challenge you to borrow a 3Gs for a couple of weeks, and let me know how you feel when start using the 3G again. It is like getting back to using a computer from the 80s. The performance difference is ridiculous.

Wait it's not worth upgrading to a phone that doesn't have any new worthwile features you can basically get all of those software features from jailbreaking

Get it now. Life is too short to wait. You could die the day before WWDC 2010.

FPMSL!!

bet thats something that didn't come into consideration when waiting

if i was you i'd keep your 3G until next June, although as stated, you might Die lol

Alternatively, cryogenically freeze yourself leaving instructions that you are to be reanimated when Apple release an iPhone with a flash.

If you want an iPhone now get one now, if you can live w/o one wait till next June to see what apple does in 2010. Waiting till december just to see if apple does anything makes no sense since they won't (and haven't) updated the iPhone in december.

This question has been asked so many times around the web, not just on this site.

You need to get what you need first, and want second, when you need it. If that is Christmas, then go for it. If you can wait, wait, there will always be something newer and better down the road.

The next version after the next version is supposed to have a time machine implemented. I would wait for that if I was you.

I can't believe that I bought the 3GS. I should have just JBed my 3G to get the faster processor, better camera, better GPU, double RAM and extra 16GB storage.

What a fool I was.

This is pretty simple. Buy the 3GS now (or get it for Christmas). When the new iPhone is announced next year, you can sell your 3GS on eBay for probably around double or so what you pay for it now. Assuming the next iPhone has the same price point as the 3G and 3GS did at launch, the eBay proceeds should pretty much pay for your new iPhone, making upgrade eligibility pretty much not matter. This is what I did going from my 3G to 3GS. I paid $199 for my 8GB 3G last year, sold it on eBay, and so I essentially traded in a year old 3G for a brand new 3GS for free.

if i were you.. i'd wait for the new iphone. actually in fact.. i would wait until the phone after that. the 2011 iPhone. that will surely be a MAJOR upgrade. Actually the more i think about it... you should wait for the one after that. It's prob better if you don't buy one b/c a newer one will always come out the year later. So I'd just keep waiting... and waiting... and waiting....

The thing with Apple products is you will never end up buying one if you're always scared of owning "the old generation", and waiting for the newest one to come out. Go ahead and buy it, and like the previous poster said, sell it on eBay if you want the next new one in 2010!

I think that goes with anything though.

TVs, receivers, cameras and so on.

Technology implementation is so quick that 1 year old items are just that old.

But if you keep waiting you will end up with nothing and always wondering if you should wait for the next model.

Buy now and enjoy

I don't mean the upgrades are insignificant, they are just mainly the typical upgrades that you would expect in any electronic device (bigger hard drive, faster processor, some software updates). I'm sure the 3G S is a lot better to use than the 3G and can run circles around it, just none of the upgrades really amazed me beyond what one might expect in any typical product refresh.

oh I never mentioned I already have the old 3G, and also I don't understand the ebay thing...why would someone in their right mind buy the 3GS for around 500 on ebay from me if theres a new one out for equal or lower the price

And where did you hear that little piece of information. That seems more unlikely then likely since the utility of such a backup is lost on a phone.

get the new one. This update was a minor update. (speed, capacity, you know.)

the next update i have a feeling will be pretty major. front facing camera. Verizon. better case. etc.

and im excited for it.:D

(as you can tell.)

<----

what good will a front facing camera do? its one of those things that sounds nice, but when you think about it...its not that useful..unless you are a girl who likes taking those self portraits of yourself and bffs with their faces like on each other.

and whos saying the 3GS isnt the big upgrade...and next year will be smaller. More 3GS are being sold than 3G so its not like there are significantly more 3G out there by time 2010 comes around. i'm just saying..dont assume big updates are now on the 2008, 2010, 2012 time frame...maybe they are on 2007, 2009, 2011.

i am not a chick. i just think that a front facing camera would be cool for like vid chatting n stuff. it could be useful.

And im not even so sure its going to happen.;)
