Thanks for the initial question, advice on checking for taken names, and tip on using trial .mac as an option. I now have a .mac address ahead of MobileMe. cheers :)

That's how I reserved mine, purely because I planned on using MobileMe because of the features that it offered, but I also wanted a @mac.com email address, looks way more professional than @me.com.

Open Finder, Click on the iDisk icon, follow the instructions until you get to the login, on the side there will something that says "Sign up for a 60 Day Trial."

Hope that helps :)

Oh and just a question, how long do they keep the Trial info for after the 60 days are up?
I really like the .mac email and want to keep it for later, but I dont money as of now to pony up for the service :p
You will have to pay for a full sub BEFORE the 60 day trial is up. They delete your account info as soon as the trial is over otherwise.

Aw, that really sucks. I really wanted to keep the @mac.com email.
So if I buy the subscription, and keep it for one year, can I THEN continue to have the email forever? Or would I still need to pay each year to keep it?

You would need to keep paying $99 a year to keep the email address since .mac/mobile me is a subscription service.

Yep, that worked, Thanks!

get .Mac now if you want 'areyoulookin@mac.com' AND 'areyoulookin@me.com' opposed to just 'areyoulookin@me.com'

everybody here has had some great advice so i went out and bought the .mac subscription with my mac purchase to receive instant 30$ off.

now i have a quesiton. i haven't set up a trial yet, but if i were to set up something like

xyz@mac.com and use the trial for 60 days (after mobile me launches) and then enter my sub code that i bought yesterday will i get to keep the mac account and have it switched over automatically to me.com?

does that make sense? keep my 60-day trial and have my .mac subscription start after me.com launches so my sub lasts long, cuz if i start before the 60-day trial is over that wastes a little bit of time.
what do you guys think? thanks and sorry if that doesnt make sense.

I kinda assumed I'd have to shell out. I just wanted the .mac addy, as I wanna use MobileMe once iPhone hits Australia.

I think this trial option is for those of us who'd prefer to defer payment for whatever reason - sounds like there are discounts available if you are up for purchasing now rather than later, off Amazon or wherever.

Also, the 60 day trials are limited on what you can do. Basically email and photo galleries are about it from what I can remember. Everything works when you pay up.

I'm not sure, that's why I went ahead and purchased a few days ago. I know current .mac subscribers can keep their @mac email address, but after the transition? I searched, but couldn't find it.

Amazon has .Mac for $69, but I found a place that sells it for $56.

I didn't think it would be legit, but the box I got was shrinkwrapped and had a CompUSA sticker on it. They must have bought out their stock. Works out to $4.69 a month, not bad to try it!

Looks like I missed it, its back up to $79.99!:rolleyes:

I have another question for you .mac gurus:
If I buy a .mac subscription now at a discount (from Amazon, eBay, etc.), then in a year when it's time to renew, if Amazon, eBay, etc. still have the .mac at a discount, can I buy that to renew instead of doing it directly with Apple and paying full price? If so, how does that work?

Yes you can ... :)

Just enter the Mac activation key, job done.

ps Sorry I meant to say you just go to www.mac.com/activate and enter the number to give you another year.

I placed an order with royaldiscount.com a couple days ago and was all excited but I just got an email saying they don't have anymore in stock. :( I went to Amazon and they're now charging $77.49 for it. I'm going to keep looking around for the best deal.

Why do you guys want to pay for .Mac? Pretty much all of its features are better supported elsewhere and in many cases are free too.

re: Why pay for .Mac anyway?

That, of course, has ALWAYS been the argument against paying for a .Mac account. It's the reason I've never bought one, despite using Macs since around 1999 or 2000.

The thing is though, Apple seems to be well aware of this, and so they keep working to make .Mac more and more attractive. For example, their backup utility lets you back up selected data of importance on a regular schedule, to their server for off-site storage. Similar services exist from other companies, of course, but I'm not aware of any free ones for OS X? (Mozy has a free edition for Windows users that lets you back up something like 10MB maximum, but their Mac version of their client seems to only be available in a paid monthly subscription version.)

Apple has also, in the past, thrown in free software bonuses with .Mac subscriptions to sweeten the deal (such as free JamPacks for GarageBand, or a free anti-virus software license).

Now, with MobileME, they're adding something you'd definitely have to pay a fee to get any other way (unless you're talking about a corporate system where your company already paid for the infrastructure)... wireless synchronization of your Entourage or Outlook content with an iPhone.

When you throw in the added convenience of the tight integration (ability to edit a web site using iWeb, instead of having to connect to a traditional web host via FTP and uploading your pre-edited web pages, etc.) - it starts to make more sense.

They delete everything but your @mac email. Once you have a trial setup, the @mac is yours. I had a trial account in 2006 and just officially activated it last week. I used my @mac account with iChat the entire time.

Believe it or not, I do see your point. I've struggled before about whether to keep mine (I got it last year when I bought my computer). Before they announced MobileMe, I was set to let it expire but MobileMe looks like it'll finally be something worth it. So I figured I'd renew it (it expires next month) and try it out and then if it's not worth it, I'd let it expire. But, the thing is, I don't want to pay full price. If I get it at a discount, it won't feel that bad.
