re: Why pay for .Mac anyway?
That, of course, has ALWAYS been the argument against paying for a .Mac account. It's the reason I've never bought one, despite using Macs since around 1999 or 2000.
The thing is though, Apple seems to be well aware of this, and so they keep working to make .Mac more and more attractive. For example, their backup utility lets you back up selected data of importance on a regular schedule, to their server for off-site storage. Similar services exist from other companies, of course, but I'm not aware of any free ones for OS X? (Mozy has a free edition for Windows users that lets you back up something like 10MB maximum, but their Mac version of their client seems to only be available in a paid monthly subscription version.)
Apple has also, in the past, thrown in free software bonuses with .Mac subscriptions to sweeten the deal (such as free JamPacks for GarageBand, or a free anti-virus software license).
Now, with MobileME, they're adding something you'd definitely have to pay a fee to get any other way (unless you're talking about a corporate system where your company already paid for the infrastructure)... wireless synchronization of your Entourage or Outlook content with an iPhone.
When you throw in the added convenience of the tight integration (ability to edit a web site using iWeb, instead of having to connect to a traditional web host via FTP and uploading your pre-edited web pages, etc.) - it starts to make more sense.
Why do you guys want to pay for .Mac? Pretty much all of its features are better supported elsewhere and in many cases are free too.
