Wait on iPhone

I would definitely wait on the iPhone. You've waited since the launch, waited thru Macworld, now wait thru February since it was updated last February.

If not updated by March 1 I would wait till June for the back-to-school promotions. Definitely by then. If no update by July 1 likely you should wait till October and see if there is an update prior to the 2009 Holidays. Definite definite by then. If by November 1 it has not been updated you might as well assume Apple is clearing out the old model and likely there will be an update January of 2010.

So I think at worse case you should wait till February of 2010 before purchasing an iPhone.

Gotto go my iPhone is ringing and I want to explore more apps.....

Now this gave me a great chuckle.

That was funny.

But there is no need to wait. I don't think there is going to be a major update until at least July. Maybe a 32GB somewhere in between. If you really need the 32GB, then wait. But, if you are just waiting for the 32GB to come out so you can get the 16GB for cheaper, you'll only be out $100. If that's the reason, don't worry about it, either way, iPhones aren't cheap.

either way you just sound like another apple sheep follower so im sure nothing i will say will deter you anyway. so, go buy your iphone and feel cool about it.

I don't own any other Apple products, so my interest in the iPhone is entirely based on comparing various devices. I've played with several devices in stores and nothing, absolutely nothing, comes close to the iPhone.

The only thing that has kept me from buying it so far (since I got out of contract) were
- Difficult to replace the battery.
- Phone locked to AT&T forever. You might be able to unlock it but you can't guarantee the phone will function and you might not be able to update the software. This also means that when I travel internationally, I need to have a different phone for use with local SIM cards.
- Reports about dropped calls. This means that the phone showed multiple bars of signal strength, but the call just fails.

Other negatives that I heard about that I was willing to live with all along
- Intermittent crashes/slow performance when there are too many apps. Doesn't bother me because I don't expect to use too many apps other than those that come with the device.
- No voice dialing. My current phone doesn't have it either, so I won't be missing anything.
- No turn by turn directions for GPS. I don't own a GPS today, so anything is preferable.

I don't like phone with keyboard only, or touchscreen + keyboard. I prefer just the touch screen. There are very few phones out there with a touch screen and none of them have the sophistication of the iphone (I've tried the Samsung Behold and Blackberry Bold, not sure if there are others; if there are let me know).

Anyway, want to thank everyone for responding.

The main reason for asking here was to see if there might be an update. For me the biggest things I would be looking for in an update would be:
- Slimness/weight
- Longer battery life
- Less reports of dropped calls

Exactly.

If you can't afford to upgrade to a new iphone every year then wait for what you want or what you need.

I'm waiting until June, if nothing new by then, I'm going shopping. :D

I wouldn't worry about those three things. First the iphone is the same size and smaller than blackberries. Yes it's more than a stick or clamshell but you get more things. The iphone fits better in the pocket than most blackberries.

Battery life is comparable to blackberry and other smartphones. Most iphone owners I know charge it everynight or every two days. Just buy a car charger and extra charge cords and charge when needed. Unless you're going to someplacce without electricity for a few days it's not a problem.

Dropped calls I don't know about. I mean that's cell phone life. I haven't had too many cell phone drops.

Software updates will come to make the iphone better. Don't worry about the hardware too much. 8G or 16G or 32G it really doesn't matter in my opinion. Unless you have to have to your entire music library on your iphone.

Do you have any suggestions/recommendations?? I've looked at a lot of other phones and played with them. Nothing appeals like the iphone. Basically with the iphone the total premium over other smartphones is about $200-300. That's not too bad over 2 years for something that has as great a UI.

I think the iPhone Nano would be a better fit for you.

That is, if the iPhone Nano exists.

To Thread Starter:
Just get a cheap phone. I think you would be happy with it since you never listen to music (On iTunes anyways) or need the 8GB. I would love the 16 GB because I have too much music and podcasts but too poor :(. You are blindly wasting your 1800 bucks for nothing because just of the touchscreen and you won't even be using more than 2 of the features from what you said.

I'm waiting...for 32 GB. In the meantime, I'm making due with my old cell + an ipod touch. Unless the iphone has 32 GB, I'll still end up carrying 2 devices around, so that's why I wait (although at this point it's also a matter of principle for me).

To the OP, if capacity is not an issue for you, I see no reason for you to wait at this point.

Good points. Maybe the OP would be better off buying a cheap phone and an iPod touch instead of an iPhone. Then you could avoid the heavy monthly fees...

I just bought it this evening.

Thanks for all the responses.

BTW, any recommendations for a protective case/cover? I'm looking for something that would add a minimum to the weight/size while still providing some protection. I did get a pack of films for protecting the screen but couldn't quite decide on what case to get. The store guy was recommending the incase slider.

As of now, I don't have any plans to dock the phone. However, I would prefer something that didn't require removing in order to charge the phone.

I'll probably be here a lot. :)

How do I actually close an app, as opposed to just returning to the menu while the app is open?

Thanks.

For more info about millions of iPhones cases out there, please visit the iPhone accessories forum, you'll see a lot of reviews there that you can read. Search will be your friend.

How to close an app - Press the Home button.
Pressing the Home button long enough will make sure the app is really terminated.

Congrats on your new iPhone purchase :)
