Why would I need this for my 2023 M2 Mac Mini?
Right now I’m using this for $37.99 at BB and it works great:
USB vs Thunderbolt for one.... for displays the 4k output is limited to 30hz on your adapter too... no ethernet on yours.... limited to 60w charging, and it's pass through not its own psu...

Nothing wrong with yours if it works for you, but it's nowhere near the same thing...

I've had a few docks from OWC and they have all been absolute junk. If you literally breath on these things the cables wobble and boom disconnect. That company is dead to me.

If you're looking for a killer dock and money isn't an issue, I would highly recommend The iVanky Max 1. An unbelievable amount of ports and they all work perfectly. I've never loved a dock as much as I do this one. Been using it for several months now without any issues whatsoever.

My dude, that's more than 5 times the price of the cheaper dock and almost double the price of the higher end one. I'm not saying the OWC docks are ones to jump on, the cheaper one in particular is definitely a dated dock by now, but the fact that a $550 dock is more feature complete than a $100 one or a $300 one is not surprising, and it's unlikely that someone looking to spend $100 or even $300 is cross-shopping with something that much more expensive

I've got three USB type C hubs, one for each laptop and one for Steam Deck, but I needed to access my Western Digital RAID combo and it needs two USB type A ports side-by-side, plus this should charge my MacBook Air.

I'll see how reliable it is, but I've had good luck with OtherWorld Computing since APSTech went away.

It is USB-C hub and not a Thunderbolt hud.

It has half the ports at half the speed.

Why does it have 2 Thunderbolt connectors for your computer, does it need to take up 2 ports?

That said, it looks like a really nice dock, so many skimp on the number of USB-C ports.

It really looks outdated with that ports. But - if someone needs USB A... I've got myself a I-TEC USB-C Adapter for my old brother printer. 3x USB 3.1 + Lan for 30 Bucks here in Europe. Works great for a year now on my MBP 16" I9.

Cheap hubs like that usually overheat when multiple ports are in use. They burn themselves up after using USB-PD for any extended period of time. Amazon reviews for that product confirm it.

If you look at a teardown of a Lenovo, Dell, CalDigit dock, they all have a big heatsink with high temp capacitors. There's a lot of data moving around inside a hub/dock. There's a reason why workplaces never deploy low quality no-name hubs to staff.

It's essentially two Thunderbolt docks in one enclosure. I'm guessing half the ports go through one Thunderbolt connection, and the other half go through the second Thunderbolt connection.

There's only so much data/bandwidth a single Thunderbolt connection can support. For example, one Thunderbolt connection can only support two displays. This dock supports up to four displays, so it needs two Thunderbolt connections.

Just too much usb a bs on most of these thunderbolt docks. at most I'd be okay with 1 usb a port as long as there are 5 or 6 times the amount of usb c ports.

Based on comments above… OWC has lost the love of Mac users. In my opinion the love loss is justified.

I bought two of the 8k Satechi adapters and so far (been less than a month) they work really well.

Surely a market for Apple to make their own docks
Apple has to first fix the idiotic issue with only being able to support 1 external display with a USB port. I want to use a dock for my MBP, but cannot/will not because of this issue.

This is $153 in Canada. But seeing the previous comments it seems like it would not be worth it.
Don't ever rely on tech blog comments or opinions. The denizens of those forums are the most negative people on the planet. Nothing is any good, everything is outdated crap, useless, defective, the list goes on.

I bought this dock at the $99 price, plugged everything in and things just worked. However, I will soon be labeled an OWC fanboy by the same crowd now deriding the product.

That’s a good price for a TB dock. USB-C docks can be cheaper but won’t provide dual display for a Mac or TB pass through capabilities (say to a drive box). I had one of these for my i9 MBP and later gave it to my sister for her M1 Pro MBP. Still in daily service. Needs a power cycle every couple months, but no complaints otherwise.

I bought this dock before reading the reviews here on MacRumors for my M2 MBA to completely replace my M1 Mac mini (I don't really have a need for two machines), hooked up to a LG widescreen monitor.

Honestly, for $100, it ain't bad. Yeah, it doesn't have a ton of USB-C ports and it only supports USB 3.1, but I have very few USB-C devices that can't also use USB A, and I have no USB 4 or TB 4 devices. In fact, I have no TB devices, period. It suffices for my needs and will likely work just fine for many users who aren't doing super intensive tasks.

My only complaints are that it has a legacy TB3 controller so it doesn't work with my work laptop, an HP ProBook, and the lack of HDMI (luckily I have a USB-C to HDMI cable) but it ain't bad for a hundred bucks.

USB-A ports in 2024. What’s next, accommodations for parallel printers and VGA displays? What about SCSI and PS/2? AppleTalk? Where do I plug in my US Robotics modem?

Thank you. I frequently feel like I’m the only one speaking up about them.
I have purchased numerous storage solutions (HDD and SSD), docks, hubs, cables from OWC over the years and all have been of high quality and performance. Never had problems with any of them. Your experience is definitely not the norm. Latest is the 14 port Thunderbolt Dock on sale for $99. Downloaded and installed the free Dock Ejector for this product and now my Apple SuperDrive works without having to plug it into a port on my M1 Studio Max.

What dock do you guys recommend? CalDigit TS4? Do you know of any good docks that have a dual TB4 connection so both controllers are used? Ideally not bus powered.
