Get ready for electronic portals known as backscatters, expected to be tested at a handful of airports this year, that use X-ray imaging technology to allow a screener to scan a body. And yes, the body image is detailed. Let's not be coy here, ladies and gentlemen:

"Well, you'll see basically everything," said Bill Scannell, a privacy advocate and technology consultant. "It shows nipples. It shows the clear outline of genitals."
time to take out the lead underwear...

Surely there are some human rights, not to mention morality issues here...

"You can fly, but only if you [effectively] get naked for us."

id just hope that they have a good, no not good but rather f*ing awesome screening process for the people who would be running these things. i dont want a freaking pervert behind one of 'em

At minimum wage? R-i-i-i-g-h-t. Yeah, they'll get the finest most upstanding citizens, and do a thorough job of screening them, yessir.

Another TSA stupidity.

What about children? If they are included, seems like a bad thing. If they're excluded, then they become potential mules.

I fly a lot for business, and I don't feel any more secure than before 9/11. All they've done is cause added delays, infringe on our personal privacy and spend a huge amount of tax payers' money.

They get paid very well.

The quality is a bit questionable though. There are lots of stories of theft.

As for how it works, its a technique called back scatter xray. Normal xrays shoot through stuff. Denser stuff reflects the xrays elsewhere. You put film behind it and you get a negative picture of the dense material.

Back scatter is where you look at what bounced off. I don't entirely understand the whole thing but the radiation levels are less.

Hmm. I may have been reading different articles. I thought that airport security was mostly contracted out to private firms who pay staff $8 - $12 per hour. I have no doubt the firm gets paid well, but the staff would be paid the lowest the market would bear.

"In fact, most federal security is also provided by relatively low-wage contract personnel."

http://edition.cnn.com/SPECIALS/2001/trade.center/flight.risk/airport.wages.html
"The following is a sample of starting hourly wages for airport security screeners in selected U.S. cities and Western European nations. The figures are in U.S. dollars.
Atlanta: $7 per hour
Cleveland: $7 per hour
Seattle: $8.05 per hour
SanFrancisco: $11.25 per hour
France: $12.50 per hour
England $14.50 per hour
Germany $16.50 per hour"

http://edition.cnn.com/SPECIALS/2001/trade.center/flight.risk/stories/part1.mainbar.html
"The truth is, under current Federal Aviation Administration guidelines, although airlines are responsible for airport security, they bid the task out to private security firms.

"What happened is we dumbed down the security system, because an airline is going to want to cut cost, specifically when we have a downturn in the economy and they are fighting for their lives," said Sen. Max Cleland (D-Georgia), a member of the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee.

"So, if you have the airlines responsible for $1.8 billion worth of security at 700 checkpoints in America, they're dumbing down the system," he added. "They go to the low bidder on a contract. Then, the contractor is going to go to the lowest cost person out there -- minimum wage people -- so they can make a little money."

According to reports submitted to Congress, security screeners are generally paid at or near minimum wage to serve as, in many cases, the last line of defense for safe air travel."

As long as the sheeple keep going along for the ride with a big smile on their face, expect nothing to change. Expect more freedoms to be stripped in the name of security.

Next time I fly, I'm going to scribble on myself with a Sharpie, "Hello!" and see what happens when they scan me with one of those things.

Ain't that the truth! I'm sorry but most Americans I'd rather not see through their clothes.

The following sentences are rated PG-13. Scroll past them if you have small children watching your screen.

Personally I think it would be funny to take a Viagra right before I get to the airport, so when they screen me I'll have a huge, massive, raging boner for them to look at. Personally I'm not that shy of a person so if looking at my genitals will make the airlines safer, well then they're more than welcome to view and admire my larger than average member. ;)

except that first, it won't make the airlines safer, and second, you might stop to consider the significant majority of people who don't feel comfortable being (effectively) strip-searched every time they want to fly.

The sad part is that the FBI is still able to sneak weapons on to airplanes basically at will. All this new security will not stop people who know what they're doing - it will only annoy the rest of us.

That was uncalled for.

;)

Why do airport screeners scan people ie, old people or people who definitely look like tourists? They only need to scan for Arabs and people of dark complexion.

Only if you were eating :p

And come on Lacero, they're not going to do profiling - that just going to open up a huge can of worms and I'm sure you can find all sorts of discussion on this in the Political forum....

Sounds like a scene from a b-grade porn. :D The hot female TSA supervisor would come over and say, "I've detected a weapon of mass destruction in your pants. I'll have to detain you for further searching." [cue porno music]
