I would think that the X-Ray would be preferable to being stripped search. Hopefully this will end the physical pat down of women. Women were complaining about being touched. Also if you see hundred's a day how can you really pay attention to any certain, the mind should be on looking for counter-band.

Why do airport screeners scan people ie, old people or people who definitely look like tourists? They only need to scan for Arabs and people of dark complexion.

NICE.

Because not only are all terrorists Arabs, but all Arabs are terrorists. At least that's what the Bill O'Reilly wants me to believe. ;)

I fly a lot for business, and I don't feel any more secure than before 9/11. All they've done is cause added delays, infringe on our personal privacy and spend a huge amount of tax payers' money.

You betcha. But what are you going to do about it? This wonderful democratic *grin* government of, by and for the people has dictate that all citizens are to be harrassed on the basis that the government meddled too much in other nations' affairs and failed to protect its citizens in 2001, so now we'll all suffer. I doubt more than 1% of passengers feel any more secure, but 99% feel more harrassed. What a wonderful, democratic government we have. I'm proud to be an American.

As for how it works, its a technique called back scatter xray. Normal xrays shoot through stuff. Denser stuff reflects the xrays elsewhere. You put film behind it and you get a negative picture of the dense material.

Back scatter is where you look at what bounced off. I don't entirely understand the whole thing but the radiation levels are less.

Yeah, I figured that. I just wonder because weak x-rays pretty much all get absorbed, while its higher energy x-rays that scatter from materials. We're talking about 300 keV energy x-rays and higher for decent scatter proportions, but probably higher if you want most of it to scatter and not get absorbed by organs and such.

To give you an idea as to how much 300 keV of energy is (its actually not much, but still), you use those types of energies to treat prostate and cervical cancer. (ie: an Iridium-192 source)

Now all you need is another terrorist attack to happen and you Americans will be BEGGING for the government to employ this. I'm actually with the government on this one in that it'll make flying safer. However, I don't want anyone else to see my hot girlfriend naked. Call me selfish. :p

And even with this x-ray business, terrorists will just start hiding bombs in their a--holes.

I wonder how FBI sneak in metal objects past the security metal detector? Or do they just bring in non-metallic bombs and such?

Heck, imagine anyone flying back after one of the big "eater weekends" here stateside. What used to be strictly a Thanksgiving and Xmas phenomenon has now morphed into Valentine's Day, Easter, Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, etc., etc. But enough ranting.

I thought they were gonna start weighing all passengers after that overloaded plane went down in NC. Didn't see any scales when I flew last month...

Can see how this technology would be big with the peeper/voyeur crowd. Not unlike that frightening euphoric feeling a molester gets when he is given the ultimate green light as "Troop Leader."

To Lacero,

I sincerely hope that you were joking/being sarcastic.

I'm a very thick-skinned person, but I found your comment to be highly offensive!

If you were being sarcastic, next time you make a similar comment, please use sarcasm tag's or indicate it in some other way. Better yet, don't make such comment's again.

With lacero, I think it's better to ask him to tag his non-sarcastic words/senteces/posts.

Duff-Man says...actually, I would not at all be surprised that if this system does get into use that there will end up being "alt.binaries.pictures.airport.security.scans" or something like that...it is bound to happen.

But that really is not the point. I think it all comes down to the debate as to what is an acceptable level of intrusion into personal privacy, under the cover of "security."

And just curious WDLove - is it more acceptable to have men "patted down" than women? I thought we were all supposed to be after equality? ....Oh yeah!

On the radio programs that I've listened to, its the ladies that were complaining about the pat down. Can't say that I've heard of men complaining. That is why I mentioned women. Just goes back to some sexism, "Thats a cute girl let's pat her down." Chances are it doesn't happen that much with men, unless there is some anecdotal evidence from forum members. I willing to be enlightened.

This is something that shows my age. I can remember as a youngster going to a shoes store, that had an X-ray machine just for the feet. You would try on a pair of shoes and then just put your feet into the machine. Then they could actually gauge the fit.

Duff-Man says....well, as someone that has been singled out on more than one occasion for that extra "random" security pat down while boarding a plane I can say that I do object as well....oh yeah!

Was it males that did the pat down? Did the pat down resemble the way police check suspects for weapons? I don't think that I would object to over the clothes. Is it done in privacy?

Duff-Man says....yes, much like a police check (not that I have ever had that done...)...no, not in privacy at all....it is a supposed "random" check done at the boarding gate as you are about to walk onto the plane. I just went through this a couple weeks ago at Heathrow...I was also singled out once at LAX and once in Toronto...makes me really suspicious of the randomness of it - most people would say I do not dress "normal" (whatever that is) and tend to stick out in a crowd somewhat. Which in my mind makes it all the more ridiculous...those that are out to really do something are more likely to try their hardest to blend in and not stick out in the crowd.....oh yeah!

You could start with removing the cape and the can-belt.

The only person on the board that *didn't* spot the sarcasm a full bloody mile off. If you needed tags for that, it's you that has issues - not Lacero.

And I agree with a previous poster - hella funny mate :D

Edit: Oh dear, redAPPLE didn't see it either.

Some people need to take themselves a little less seriously

Actually, Lacero makes an ass out of himself everyday ... im surprised that they let him continue to post. Either he's actually retarded or just a jerk ... (now editing my post ... Lacero may not actually be a jerk or retarded, but may in fact just be ignorant to the type of presence he keeps on MacRumors) but i can say that cause im brown right? Certified Terrorist.

... some people need to take their role in life a little more seriously; you've empowered your government to do it for you. Do you trust these people?

Getting back more on the subject of the x-rays, I don't know how much I'd mind to be seen naked myself, but I'd definitely not want some guy seeing my girlfriend naked. I don't know what it is, but that is really objectionable to me.

I just thought of this, if they do implement this, why not have a male and female line? The men would be checked by men and the women by women. That makes it a little better.

Actually, the more I think about this whole idea, I think it's terrible. I think it'd be horrible if people had to be seen naked just to fly on a plane. Even if some people are okay with it, you can be sure that plenty of people aren't.

Homosexuality.

Im not a big fan of clothes, but those who watch you naked should be required to be seen naked themselves ... how do 'we the people' know that those checking us aren't terrosists themselves??? How do we know that they are not hiding a bomb (or a dildo for you Fight Club fans) in there ass!!! ??? Watch your watchers! Your watchers are watching you! :)
