On AT&T the credits are over 36 months - this just doesn't seem worth it. Rather trade in direct with Apple and get the credit immediately, right?
Depends on your future upgrade desires. I guess if you don't mind upgrading for 3 years you could go this route, I'm currently debating it because I think its enough of an upgrade from my 13 Pro Max to justify it. For my phone Apple will give me a $580 trade-in value. I don't think I need it badly enough to owe AT&T $5.50 payments for 3 years. I enjoy the freedom of having a phone free and clear of any kind of monthly payment obligations.

Calls are still entirely VoLTE -- whether you see "LTE" or "5G" in the status indicator makes no difference.

If the LTE microcell works better, it is more likely poor Wi-Fi connectivity that is impacting Wi-Fi calling.

WiFi connectivity is perfect, this happens whether I'm next to the router or far away, I just personally (anecdotally based on my own experiences over the years and with different routers/providers) find WiFi calling abysmal. My point about the towers is I feel my reception bounces from one tower to the other, I'm not sure how well VoLTE is handled in that case, but it's only my non-technical guess as I really don't know what causes me to have almost zero reception even with 1-2 bars.
