+1

Like epic +1! I do video work on my BlackBook and the frame is highly functional in creating a border between my reality and actual reality (however much I try to ignore actual reality *sigh*). Plus when you're watching video it defines a clear edge to the picture.

Also... I remember the 14" iBooks. Everyone I knew bought the 12" ones for the simple reason that when they were working by themselves with the machine on their knees or in bed or whatever, an extra inch or so of screen is about as useful as a lead balloon.

+2. the black frames the screen nicely, I much prefer it to an aluminum bezel. It offsets itself nicely from the rest of my surroundings in the office.

Artofilm when did I say it was done to upset me? If you did not notice this thread is also trying to find reasons why the bezel is so big. No solid reason have been given though so if you have some concrete evidence please share.

I do like a black glass bezel very much. But there can def be too much of a good thing.

These aren't really flaws. They are your personal dislikes. That said I wish the new MacBooks still had firewire. The bezel doesn't bother me.

Just out of curiosity would any one want the smaller Macbook depicted in the picture I attached in my first post on the right? Same exact size keyboard and screen.

That computer exists. It's called the MacBook Air.

Apple has been obsessing over the size of their notebooks recently. Saying it would be "easy" for them to make the MacBook smaller is a really poor assumption... if they could have made it smaller, with the same price point and power, they would have. Clearly there are limiting factors at work here.

But hey, why think critically? Way easier to just to whine.

Sorry that was my friend. I do not work for apple. I wish I did though haha.

If they made the screen bezel smaller, the base of the computer would have to be smaller. This means smaller components, more cost, more heat...
Wasn't that a solid enough reason?

And you know this how?

Why, because His Excellency ivdig wants it to be untrue. And what he wants, he gets. ;) :D

In all seriousness, it's not as if Apple just puts the bezel there to annoy you. Ive put it there as a conscious design choice, in addition to the laptop needing a place to put the iSight camera and AirPort antennas.

Plus, your own picture in the initial post has the smaller-bezeled laptop with a smaller base. Despite your claim the screens are the same size, they don't look the same size at all.

The big, black mirror bezel is there because Apple wants to iPhone-ify its entire product line. The iPhone is their new bread winner, and they want all other products to identify with it. Unfortunately, that aesthetic did not travel well into the laptop line.

bezel is really a personal choice. I'll have to say the new bezel is definitely better than the bezel that's on the white macbook.

But personally, I favor the bezel on the ACDs or macbook air. The previous macbook pro's bezel was perfect however, so narrow and thin.

It honestly is the same size, I just minimized the bezel and the edges around the keyboard.

If they make the bezel smaller it either means making the screen larger, or the base of the computer smaller, either choice would cost more for the consumer.

Either way there would be more consumers whining than now.
And yes, it's not an issue having Apple make a smaller computer, but as you can see from the price of the Macbook Air, it costs a good amount for a smaller computer than a larger one.

I bought a 2.4 MB because I wasn't prepared to shell out for a max spec glossy MBP. I'll wait until the matte revisions for that...

I think the bezel is a huge design flaw. My old TiBook has a bezel half as wide. I can't see any practical reason for the bezel whatsoever. An antenna is a piece of wire. It doesn't need a thick-ass chunky strip of cheap-looking black gloss to hide behind.

In terms of making the glossy screen even worse, it's just horrible; you get a stupid, shiny bright screen that's unusable in many lighting conditions and then a black mirror that throws reflections right across it all the way around; way to go.

I love everything about my new MB except the screen/bezel configuration (and the power switch, but that really is a subjective issue!) It's a real shame the screen is what you have to look at while you're using the damn thing. It's a mess.

The "flaw" of the bezel is more of a personal opinion than a technical flaw.

I like the bezel, and by how many new macbooks have sold so far, I assume others like the bezel too.
I like how it seperates the screen from the surroundings, and I like how it allows me to open the notebook without touching the screen. I also like the way it looks.

I don't think Apple is in the business (nor do I think it is possible) to please every single person on earth. There will always be something that someone doesn't like.
(And I also think there will always be more people that like it, than people that don't.)

If they just simply got rid of the bezel by downsizing it, it would look something like this:

Mmmmmmm, thats Ugly!

Dude, ever think that maybe the notebooks need the space on the bottom? Shrinking the bezel would also mean shrinking the base, and that might not be possible or affordable.
