Of course the bezel is part of the overall design, and no one part is designed in isolation. Apple increased the footprint of the laptops to accommodate the bezel so that they could have the bezel echo the iPhone in appearance. They then designed the insides around that new volume and made the corners around the screen wastefully rounded (clearly another aesthetic decision, not a practical one).

Dude, ever think that maybe the notebooks need the space on the bottom? Shrinking the bezel would also mean shrinking the base, and that might not be possible or affordable.

Like the 12" MBP, or the narrow-bezelled macs of yore?

Besides, I don't think it's the fact of the bezel as much as its horrible, mirror-like integration with the screen that's the problem.

The screen and bezel configuration on the current airbook is much less troubling to the eye, and in fact, that older glossy screen feels generally much easier to look at.

I never thought I'd even consider an Air, but the whole mess of 'inside-lid' issues almost drove me to it. I may yet take the MB back
