Yeah, my point is they CAN'T store their photos and videos on their computers because it's only 256Gb. That is exactly why they need it. If computers came standard with 1Tb drives like computers did TEN YEARS AGO, not as many would need to pay monthly to store their files in the cloud.

unnovation - making products worse to maximize profits.
Show me any consumer laptop from any manufacturer that came with 1TB AS STANDARD ten years ago. I struggle to find one TODAY. Lenovo T14, which is what my company gives me, starts at 256 (and 8GB of RAM!) You’re living in fantasy land.

Also, “they” don’t need to store “their” photos and videos on their laptops. Most people do that on their phone, or not at all.

So they drop the price of the base/plus model each year but they have no need to do it for the SE even though it’s sold for multiple years. what does that tell you?
The thing you are not getting is that Apple selling M2 Airs for 699.- through certain channels aren’t computers that sat unsold in a warehouse somewhere. Apple keeps manufacturing them to have something for the budget customers, without watering out the offerings in the “official” sales channels. Exactly like they do with phones. That is why some models are out of stock really quickly, while others keep selling for months and months. If anything, keeping a model as a budget option shows that this model was popular. Otherwise they would just kill it. Why keep an unpopular model around as a budget model - it would still be unpopular.

The M1 MacBook Air with 8GB for $629 just became a terrible value at Walmart. I wonder how long they’ll milk it.

Still using an M1 iMac with 8gb. It works fine. That is incredibly good value for the experience you get.

I have the same, but still for 70 bucks more I’d get the 16GB M2*. But someone else mentioned their local Walmart charging below 600.-, and then it starts to be interesting again.

*Actually I’m a Wedge fan, and prefer the M1 for that reason. But at some point I can’t keep holding on to it. Luckily nothing indicates I’m getting close to that yet. Probably in a couple of years.

OK, I admit I wasn’t expecting HDD’s to get dragged into the conversation. You have a point, but there’s a reason we went to smaller but faster storage: It sucked.

I disagree. The 8GB was a much bigger issue than 256GB of storage. Unless they're storing all their photos on their computer 256GB is fine for most users. I think it should be 512GB though since it's so cheap.
I also disagree. I do store all of my media on my singular laptop, don’t want backup drives galore, and could care less about the 8GB ram.

The M-series chips driving these machines don’t need 16gb for its target market. Other than file storage, my M2 goes on the web, syncs to iCloud, and performs superbly.

The MacBook Air is not a multitasking powerhouse laptop for pros. They make another laptop with active cooling fans to cover that market.

I want to start seeing some comparisons of the M4 chip to the 1,2 and 3 and see if it's really worth splurging for M4 or save some bucks and go lower.

My 2015 iMac came with 1Tb hard drive. I didn't say laptop. Yes, you can't find them today. That's my point.

assuming the M4 MBA will have similar single core numbers as the M4 mini = significant bump. Wait 1-2-3 weeks, M4 MBA will go on sale. Watch the appleinside buying guide. Usually adorama is the first to knock $$ off... then maybe coscto.
