The Land of Hope and Glory
I'm thinking of getting a series 7 Apple Watch to help me stay fit, but I was wondering what people think about the fitness features that the series 7 offers?

Do you think it is worth buying one? I'm hoping it'll make the whole fitness thing a bit more fun and give me the motivation to stick with it.

Would maybe look at the cheaper SE if that’s the case. Also, depending on what you are trying to do it may or may not motivate because like most things the “fitness” features are not super accurate and it might actually be more annoying than fun. Apple watch is a great companion for runners or folks that do a lot of outdoor exercise if you get the cellular model but if you spend most of your time working out inside it’s debatable. Best bet is to try one out and see if it fits into your life style.

Use at as a tool to STAY motivated but I would recommend against getting one to get motivated.

Ah, I didn't realise it was mainly outside-based fitness. I would have to exercise in my room most of the time because I was hoping to use my Apple TV to watch exercises while doing them.

I like using mine at the gym, especially with airpods. I typically still stream music from my phone but I can control volume or skip songs, or add to playlists, etc. from my watch without having to reach for my phone (I often leave it in a bag.)
You can also load music or podcasts to the internal storage and bypass the phone entirely. I don't jog/run but could see how that would be a nice way to go.

Aside from that I like having the heart rate monitor and "closing the rings" can become a bit addictive. Though sometimes I just don't feel like wearing a watch all day and it's kind of annoying to break a streak.

So I mean really it's an extension of my phone and helps me not miss calls or ignore alarms with a built in heart rate monitor. Is that worth the price? That's up to you to decide. I got the SE and I think it's ok value so if they keep improving the watch with more health features or better battery life then I'll probably buy again in the future.

Well, I do indoor cycling almost every day and AW captured calories/time etc just fine.
I do not have the fitness subscription but my understanding is the whole point is to watch/train either via AppleTV or iPhone, with the watch.
So from that perspective you should be covered.
SE vs S7 is a who other discussion, search for threads here, there are plenty. With S7 you get ECG, SPO2 for example

It’s not mainly outside but that’s just where you get the most benefit. If you’re using it primarily inside then what are you trying to track? If it’s just calories there’s more accurate and cheaper options.

Bottom line, as a “fitness” person don’t spend a ton of money on gadgets because if it doesn’t stick then you’ll not only be frustrated you didn’t workout but are now out hundreds of dollars. Start small and find motivation within you not a product.

If you want it for the long term it makes sense. But if you are budget constrained, lookout an SE.

Here’s another thought, wait for ios16. Apple is going to allow the Fitness app to be installed on your iPhone without a paired Apple Watch. Maybe having access to the Fitness app is all the motivation you’ll need? 🤷

Hmm. Unfortunately, that still doesn't support Fitness+, which seems to be the best way to go after reading about it. Thank you for the suggestion, though.

I think it depends on your orientation. It's been utterly unsuccessful for my wife, who largely ignores its prompts. I am more susceptible to being gamed, I guess, but since I got my AW6 I've improved my vo2max by about 50%, my resting heart rate is down by about 35% and I've had to replace literally my entire wardrobe as it no longer fit. I had a 470 day move streak stopped by a horrible travel day where I was cooped up on a non-moving airplane, and have 261 days since... so it works for some folks and not for others.

As for indoors, it seems to do that fine. I do a lot of cycling, but my regular bike isn't well suited to winter conditions. I've now got a smart turbo trainer and the AW handles it just fine, including apps.

Sounds good. I really need to get fit so anything that helps is a welcome change. Thanks.

Just from a fitness standpoint… there are much more affordable options out there that do the same measuring and recording of things that the series 7 Apple Watch does. If you’re a watch person, then style and design might be a bigger driver and influencer into what watch I would pick… Personally, to me, all Apple watches look the same and the styles/design is the same… and IMHO are not worth even the base prices they have on the lowest SE. And don’t get me started on the bands and other types of things, like cases/protectors for the Apple Watch… it then goes into the extreme ridiculousness. For just fitness tracking - go with something that’s sub $100…

I have a Fitbit Sense and a Watch-7. That's $299 vs. $851. So I'd say the price alone is something to consider.
As for fitness... I jog and track my weight daily (on a Fitbit auto recording scale). I feel the Fitbit Sense & health app (along with the scale) is a much simpler and more effective fitness system than the Apple Watch.

The Fitbit application works well on PC, iOS, and Android devices.
The Fitbit Sense has an app store and can do most of what a Watch-7 can do including run customized watch faces, etc...
The Fitbit Sense battery will last for days, not hours.

The thing you need to be aware of is that the Apple Watch works 98% of the time but the Fitbit Sense only works properly about 75% of the time. The main reason I upgraded from the Fitbit Sense to Watch-7 was because on occasion the Fitbit Sense will "hang" and it can be frustrating.🤬
I once let the battery die in my Fitbit Sense and after I charged it, it took me hours of constant fussing with it to get it to turn back on, and it's not just me, there are plenty of Youtube videos of other people with the same problem.

Closeting thoughts on this. . .
I prefer the Fitbit Sense for health & workout tracking (including the cool auto tracking Fitbit scale).
However, the Apple Watch-7 just works!🥰
No hang-ups, no missed taps, no mysteriously going to sleep, etc...

Perhaps my particular Fitbit Sense is defective and I should have returned it, but from looking on-line it would seem there are others with similar Fitbit issues. I guess it's just part of learning to live with a cheap $299 watch.😐
It's a shame because considering the price, software, and accessories, the Fitbit Sense is great little watch.
keep us posted on what you buy! :)

I like the Apple Watch 7 because I live in a single room in a shared house, so I have to do all my exercise in one room. I also have an Apple TV 4k, so I looked at Apple Fitness+ on the TV and the tracking on the Apple Watch. I was hoping to do pushups, situps, and other complete body exercises as I can't fit an exercise bike or something into my room.

Would that work out with the Apple Watch? I don't mind the price so much as it would be good to integrate with all of my other Apple stuff.

You can track all that stuff with the AW7. The base workout app has all kinds of stuff, although I have found that if you're into a particular thing, other dedicated apps offer more. I run and cycle, and I have apps specifically for those. But they're really secondary to the systemic way that the Apple ecosystem is trying to push you to improve your fitness in particular and health more generally. I have an auto recording scale from Renpho, I think it cost about $25, and it just works as long as the battery hasn't gone flat. (Edit: they're on sale at Amazon at the moment for $17.)

Sure that would work!

For me the Apple Watches are the perfect addition to my iPhone.
If you already own some Apple products and your budget isn’t overly tight, for god’s sake don‘t get yourself anything else than an Apple Watch.

I like the Apple Watch 7 because. . .
The Apple W7 is a great device and a safe purchase overall. If cost is not an issue (and you have never used a Fitbit or other exercise tracking device) then you have nothing to lose since you have noting to compare it to.🙂
Learn the exercise apps on your Watch & iPhone and you will be fine.🌿

For me, the AW fall detection feature is critical. I am not sure that Fitbit has that feature. Given an iMac, iPad and iPhone. The AW makes perfect sense for me.

For those younger, who may dismiss fall detection, even young people fall and get badly injured.

I have had an Apple Watch for nearly a year, and I think it has motivated me. I have started reaching my step goals, being on my phone less, as I can see important notifications and leave them till later if need be. I have also started to track my workouts better through the normal FitnessApp, but I particularly enjoyed AppleWatch features such as Breath and Mindfulness. I also downloaded an app recently called StressFace which has helped me manage my stress levels throughout the day better than I could do before. I believe it depends on what exactly you are looking for but the Watch and the Apps have definitely been a game-changer for me :)

I had it go off last year when I had a spill off my bike. I ended up with a broken elbow. In the event, I never lost consciousness and I was able to make a call myself, but it was easy to imagine a slightly different outcome in which I might not have been able to do that. Think of it not so much as "fall detection" but as a limited form of "accident detection," since lots of accidents include falls or other severe impacts that would trigger the notice.
