Then get your line of service canceled, your debt transfered to a collection agency, and have your credit score negatively affected?

Great plan.
If you're stupid enough to ask for loophole in a cell phone contract made by a major player like Verizon, then you are stupid enough to accept my suggestion.

No those are two very different levels of stupidity.

We know there are ways to get around the ETF...that's obvious from some of the posters in this thread. So it is entirely reasonable to try to find other ways to get around the ETF.

Right; and one of those ways has been changes in charges that would affect your costs. The T-Mobile change in pricing (if you aren't already on a plan that includes SMS) is a good example. Unfortunately, Verizon made the same change back in January or February. By continuing to use their service beyond that time, you've implicitly accepted that change in the service. So, you're out of luck for now, as far as that goes. However, if there's another change in the future, you might be able to use that change (again, only if it will affect the price you pay on the monthly bill).

Generally speaking a contract is per line, not account. So, I would expect that you'd get hit for each line.

I'm in the same situation. I want to get out of my family plan and get my own account with AT&T, but I don't want to have to pay the ETF. Verizon did up one of the charges on my bill from 70 cents to 85 cents, but that was more than 60 days ago (it's been about 80 ish days), so I think I'm out of luck. I think the best you can do is call and make a big deal about how terrible your service is and such (I can do this, sense I live in a rural area where service honestly isn't that good). If you make a big enough deal about how terrible your service is, generally they'll waive the fee. Not always though.

Do What I Did

Last year when the iPhone was launched I wanted one so freaking bad I could taste it. I still had a year left on my contract with Verizon and I didn't want to have to pay the ETF.

so, I stayed in my freaking contract, like I agreed to do when I signed it, until it ended so I wouldn't have to pay an ETF.

People, be an adult about the things. You obligated yourself, you knew what you were agreeing to. Honor your word.

If you want out, then pay the ETF, like you agreed to. Otherwise wait until it ends, like I did last year.

And quit wasting thread space with juvenile questions like these.

I Mean DAMN!!!!

I wasn't aware that we had a limited supply of "thread space".

Not everyone is in the same situation you were in. For example, I never signed a contract. My parents did when they bought the family plan. Now that I'm headed off to college, I'd like to go with ATT, but I'm stuck on a contract that I didn't sign. Don't get me wrong, I'm grateful that my parents got me a phone for highschool, but if it were me, I'd never agree to a 2 year contract unless it was absolutely necessary for the phone I wanted (in which case, I'd suck it up and stick it out for 2 years).

If it's your parents family plan, then you're not stuck. You wouldn't be responsible for the ETF. Go to AT&T and open your own account. Your parents could then drop your line and save themselves some money.

Wouldn't my parents be charged an ETF for dropping my line though?

I just paid the ETF to get out of my verizon contract the day after the iPhone 3G came out.

Yes, the ETF is PER LINE. So for a 2-line family plan (what I had), I was charged a ETF for 2 lines.

Keep this in mind, Verizon now prorates your ETF fee ($5 off every month until the end of the contract). I only had to pay $80 per line instead of the normal $175 ETF fee.

Let us know what they say. I'd be interested to know.

The women I spoke to said there would be a termination fee, and that it starts at $175 and goes down every month. For security reasons, she couldn't tell me how much mine would be however, as my parents are the account holders, so they'll have to call them to find out for sure.

Anywho, the point is that the ETF for verizon is charged on a per-line basis, which definitely sucks in my situation.

wow bud, that does suck. sorry

My contract isn't up until Sept 2009 and they won't cancel my account without the ETFs. Any current known loopholes to get out of it?

Thanks

How 'bout just waiting two more months? Way things are going you won't be able to get a 3G until then anyway.

The guy I talked to at the Verizon kiosk today was all hurt that I wanted to dump my relatively crappy service for the iPhone.

Well really pal....when Steve Jobs offered your guys the phone and you "couldn't reach a mutually $atisfactory agreement", you really should have been prepared to lose a ton of people.

Besst part is that he's in front of the Apple store! So he gets to enjoy his failure at life all day. I hate Verizon so so so so so so so much. How dare they expect me to pay an ETF when it supposedly covers the phone price subsidy...on a phone I've had replaced 4 times from hardware failure. (Each time the guy behind the counter goes "Wow, this is like a one-in-a-million thing."). Go figure I happen to get only "1x" service, no 3G functionality I paid for and was assured would work. So much for having "the network"...

And no, I don't treat my phone like a bouncy ball, I've got my backup Nokia from the 90's through my local baby bell that works like a charm. So, after arguing on the phone with them about not living up to THEIR end of the deal...I got out.

And then went to see kiosk man to double check phone-lady's work.

My advice, bitch bitch bitch until they knuckle under. I love the USA sometimes.

Before you do it, make sure that you have good reception from AT&T in your area and your house. Don't make a mistake and think that just because another AT&T phone does good that the iphone will react like another phone.

I'm always amazed at these people who are looking for easy ways out of commitments they've made. You signed the contract, so you are obligated to fulfill it's requirements or pay the penalty. There are always people looking for a shortcut. Doesn't anyone have any integrity these days?
