I use the SanDisk Extreme FireWire reader for copying CF-cards from my EOS camera to my MBP. It uses FW800 so it is very fast, not FW400. I can really recommend it since its not only fast its also durable and in the same aluminium and black colors as the macbook and macbook pro.

Getting photos from CF card to MBP

I use the Express slot on my MBP with a CF card reader.

Just a thought:
Would it be an idea to find some place in the house/flat where you could place a somewhat deep shelf that fits your height when standing? This way you could use that shelf not only when transferring your stuff and for storage , but also for keeping the camera, computer, and card reader out of Tank's reach, assuming you get the cables and wires up from the floor.
Or maybe that's a stupid suggestion, idk

One word of caution though! Make sure the one you buy supports OS X, and also ensure it supports high speed. Otherwise you may as well get a USB 2.0 reader, as some of these slot readers are slow pigs!
that looks like expresscard 54... will that fit a MBP?

You're right It is an expresscard54. And right again, it wont fit, as the MBP has an expresscard34-slot (for god knows what reason other than to look "neat").
