It's perfect on the iPhone 5 and is probably the OS it should always have come with.

From what I hear 7.1 dramatically improves things in the iPhone 4 too.

Well it's crap on my i5, I waited six months for even worse battery life. Gee thanks Apple.
As for 'dramatically improving the iPhone 4', well it doesn't. iOS7 dramatically ruined the i4, and iOS7.1 merely improves matters slightly. Performance is still WAY worse than iOS6 by a massive margin.

Thank you for all the replies!

I have the iPhone 5 and I am waiting for Apple to bring back the old 3G style (rounded edges). I know, probably wishful thinking :roll eyes:

It seems as though a majority feel like iOS 7 isn't all it's cracked up to be. And if battery life is an issue, then that's one major issue right there since the battery life already sucks.

The only thing I would be concerned with is certain existing apps not updating at some point because they are no longer compatible with iOS 6. Or even new apps that I may want.

So, with that said, I think I will hold of for now. I like my iPhone just the way it is. I don't see an advantage to the update other then being able to block numbers. I do need to reboot my phone now and then for various reasons, but not a big deal and it's usually when I am at work where the service is horrible. The apps I use now work fine at the moment.

Smart man (or woman)

I have to say, even I slowly like the new UI of iOS7.1. Try to get used to it and you'll start liking it.

After a month, if you go back to 6, you'll realize how outdated it actually looks.
UI needs to evolve, no doubt.

Ok, I am giving in to iOS 7. I HATE the icon colors and font, but I need to be able to block people and there are a few other features I do like.

Anything important I should know before I switch? Is there an option to revert back to iOS 6? I am not jailbroken.

I didn't like iOS 7 at all when I first tried it, I still don't like the new dock and some of the icons but iOS 7 is still cool, control center is awesome, i like the new lock screen very much and the new keyboard too, I think iOS 7 was desperately needed for most people.

Yep. Sticking on outdated, unsupported software. Very wise.

A better call than making your handset so frustratingly slow that you need to upgrade ASAP. I would rather get another year's happy use out of iOS6 but this is merely my personal opinion.

Utter nonsense. OP has the iPhone 5 which is more than capable of running IOS 7 just as quick or quicker than 6, especially with 7.1 having tightened up the animations etc. even directed at the iPhone 4 your comments are exaggerated (certainly on 7.1).

If the aesthetics of iOS 7 don't bother you, there are several reasons to stay on iOS 6.

First: The default music app is far more functional and superior to the one in iOS 7. If you plan on continuing the use your iPhone as a very capable iPod, don't upgrade to iOS 7.

Second: The notification center has a much better layout. The calendar app is more much usable and easier to navigate.

Third: Battery life and performance were rock solid in 6.1 and I believed that iOS definitely peaked there when it came to battery and stability. Everything felt faster and more fluid.

I was talking about the iPhone4 there. Yes the OP has an i5, I was just in an iPhone 4-related thread immediately prior to posting here.

If i could just stop you there - I get that in the new artist view it might be nice to be able to collapse the albums.. But what else? What are all these other superior functions you speak of?

For me the improved lock screen access (one press and all the controls are there) together with the ease of being able to swipe up anywhere for player controls is well worth a minor change in one view of the music app.

The calendar app is a moot point since 7.1 which restored the same month/list combination as an option. With that added, navigation overall is better than 6 IMO. The notification centre is a matter of taste, I like the summaries of weather and events, how long to get home etc.

Battery life is a dark art and ten different people will give you ten different answers regardless of which IOS they're running. If you're trying to imply that nobody was unhappy with their battery life on 6.1 then clearly you're a lunatic; likewise many (both silent and vocal) don't have an issue with their battery under 7.

As for performance - on the 4S and certainly the 5 up IOS 7 has always been very fluid in my experience, and 7.1 adds more speed by shortening the animations etc - genuinely 7.1 on my i5 is the fastest I've ever felt IOS to be.

I have no real qualms with the speed or indeed look of iOS7.1 on my iPhone 5. What I do have a MAJOR issue with is the battery life, which is a good 2.5 hours down per charge cycle on what I got with iOS6. However anyone jazzes that up, it's woeful. I instantly got the battery life of a 3 year old iPhone on the original battery, and my phone was only two months old at the time. I still have almost 18 months of my contract left, so what is my battery life going to be like when the battery starts showing signs of wear itself?

I don't think anyone wants or has attempted to "jazz that up" - its just not something that everyone experiences. It's not a feature of IOS 7 as far as I'm concerned - I get as good if not slightly better battery life as I did under 6. I'm not saying that to annoy you, it's simply how 7 is for me.

I've had iPhones for over five years and have seen people attribute heinous battery issues to every new version of IOS that has come out in that time.. In a sense everyone's right of course and there often have been issues, and I have had problems in the past, but honestly I don't get the feeling that there's much wrong with IOS 7 on that score.

I'm not going to dispute the battery life you get.
Perhaps it's a carrier thing, or a certain batch of hardware, but my i5 has had lousy battery life ever since 7.0 and it's still just as lousy on 7.1
I've done DFU clean installs for every update and for 7.0 I did nine clean installs before I gave up and accepted it. Three of my friends also have dreadful battery life on their i5, even worse than mine.

My dad's iPhone4 is terrible now and I've done two clean installs for him. He has no apps other than the ones included in the o/s, so nothing is causing a conflict. The hardware is way too old to run this bloated, power hungry o/s in anything but a ramshackle way. As for control centre, meh. Hardly essential. Delays whilst typing and general sloooooooow running are in no way a trade off for anything, least of all control centre. YMMV of course (and does lolz).

Why don't people understand that a 3 year old under powered phone(uses basically the same CPU and GPU as the 3GS,which makes it 4 years old kinda) will not be able to smoothly run an OS built for dual core 1.3GHZ and 64 bit?:(

No fighting boys! ;)

I think it all boils down to personal preference.

I think a lot of people update because they didn't know any better (jumped on the wagon, or is it off?). This happens more often then not. My friend is oblivious when it comes to why she is dong an update or what the update does. She just does it because Apple says so.

I'm not knocking those who do know what the differences are, I just think we all assume Apple is only going to give us a better experience. And for the most part, the update has pleased many. Doesn't mean it's better for all of us. Maybe it's a change thing, or the asthetics of the new iOS 7 that turn me off. Especially that you can't go back. That to me is nuts! Sure I'd like to have the latest and greatest. Who doesn't? But new and improved doesn't always mean it's better in every way then the original.

To be fair I don't think that argument is good enough - since Apple chose to release IOS 7 for the iPhone 4 then it *should* run it smoothly - the first people to understand that should be Apple themselves.

I can perfectly understand it being a bit slower, but it shouldn't be a bad experience.

The good news is 7.1 seems to have rectified things for most iPhone 4 owners - which again makes your point moot.

To be honest though, your friend has the right idea. The thing with the iPhone is that it exists and is dependant on an ecosystem which is defined by IOS. When apple change IOS they change the ecosystem, and basically by holding out (for what?) you're no longer part of that ecosystem, and gradually have a less functional, less secure and more problem prone device as a result.

Your friend doesn't have to worry about that - they're always up to date, always secure, always able to run the latest apps etc... That's how it's supposed to be. Good on them.

She had the 4, it ran like crap on iOS 7, so she went out and bought the 5S. Win for Apple

It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be going from iOS 6 but I will say that I still hate the music app on iOS 7, if they would fix that I would be really really happy. Cascading through 100 albums per artists is just crazy, give me back the list view like iOS 6, it's so sad they ruined a perfect music app.

If you hate the music app try Lagu from the App Store. It's free and looks exactly like the old music app. It has Collapsed albums to save you scrolling through all those songs.

Give it a try, if you don't like it you can always delete it and it won't cost a penny. I think you will be pleasantly surprised.
