I love my iPad Pro 12.9". I am just glad MS sucked so bad on their Surface Pro and Surface Book rollouts. That is why I got it in the first place.
The botched rollout of the Surface is par for the course for Microsoft... they frequently stumble out of the gate. It's not how you start but how you finish that counts... that is why what is more telling is that after 4 iterations of the Surface things have only been tightened up but not improved.

I'm looking forward to see what Apple does with iOS 10 this June. That will be a clear indication to me whether or not the 12.9 iPad Pro will be something more than simply a bigger iPad (which is nice in and of itself).

ah, melodrama at its finest.

No drama, iOS is very poor and the UI is exteamly dated, but then again it was never designed to be used as a full system hence its compromises. I could use pen and paper, but XLS works better - i guess that's melodramatic too...

A bit of hyperbole thrown in... The surface is a much better "all in one" and/or "laptop replacement" device than the iPad will ever be. It simply has the wrong logo and doesn't have the apple marketing team promoting it.

Beats me how anyone is, or can say they are, doing any "serious" work on a 13" laptop - it defies all logic.

You'd have to define serious first... but you certainly wont get serious on an iPad..
50 shades of grey?

It's a very individual choice on how one works. My mother in law completely replaced all computing and uses her iPad 100% for anything she needs a computer for.

My wife uses her iPhone and iPad 90% of the time and rarely uses her MacBook Pro.

I used my iPad Air 2 for consumption. With the keyboard and Apple Pencil I now use my IPad Pro 9.7" MUCH more than I ever did my air 2 which accomplishes things my MacBook can't do. But I still need my MacBook for many things IOS can't do. That line is getting thinner though. Individual needs and uses vary.

You said, "Totally agree, iOS is a nightmare."
iOS is not a "nightmare". It is a well designed mobile OS. Unless you provide details to explain why you think iOS is a nightmare, that claim is little more than drama.

You then said, "I keep trying to use the iPad for more than just the odd game but i end up putting it down very quickly and pick up the mac again. its just too compromised."
Again, using specifics, how is iOS not just compromised, but too compromised? It does what it has been designed to do. There is little compromise in that. Now if you said that iOS is not sufficiently general enough to tackle the needs of something more general purpose as a notebook/laptop, I could agree with that.

Where did I imply or state that the Surface is NOT a better laptop replacement than the iPad? Implying an accusation of being a fanboy simply shows that your opinion is not supported by sufficient evidence to stand on its own.;)

I didn't say you did. Only that it was....!

iOS is full of holes and bugs, it's gotten annoying to use. It's become like windows was with repeated prompts to upgrade - I pick if and when i want to do that. Music is a complete mess, The UI is outdated and lacking - changing icon colours every years is not an what i call an improvement/upgrade, i cant download or use previous versions, it's laggy you can't use it for many workflows efficiently, lack of access to the file system, memory management is pants with constant reloading of apps or tabs in safari, i can't put icons where i want them unless I have a full screen, airdrop is a complete waste of time and works around 1 in 20, remind me how i clear all notification - oh you can't..., searching of app store is crappy is you don't like how apple present things to you, random joining of passing wifi networks, or the other one random dropping of wifi esp on iPads, can't remove icons apple have said you must have, random disabling of the fingerprint scanner until you enter password, screen becomes stuck and you have to press power then start again, BT sometimes wont connect (prob related to airdrop issues too), imsgs get confused and or stuck and wont resend no matter how many times you press resend, no user desktop - its a single passcode and everyone sees the same apps.. I'm sure theres more, but i cant be bothered tbh..

Just thought of another one as I'm cleaning up my phone, press delete on a picture and it's not only deleted on my device, but also in iclown and thus every other device too... a setting would be nice!

iPad, too compromised, the interface, I need to support it all the time, heavy, typing using a screen provides no feed back and isn't efficient for more than a few words. It does do what its designed for, browser the occasional screen, or odd email, play a game or watch a movie, but thats not many peoples workflows. its just simpler to open the laptop, its takes the same effect but gives me a full experience OS.

First mistake you made: thinking iOS could replace OS X

the iPad cannot replace the macbook, it's simply too crippled an OS, the iPad is a consumption device, plain and simple and Apple has shown no plans to change that for the future
This is based on YOUR preference. I have been using the iPP exclusively, (no Mac in sight.) I find iOS to be perfectly suitable for all my needs, Homework, Drawing, Photo Editing, Email, Internet, Video Editing, Office Apps (Windows and Apple.) I know of other people who do the same. It is true that the iPP and iOS vary from person to person in terms of usability. But as they are, the iPP and iOS 9.3 are more than capable of handling most tasks throw their way.

Kallum.

I do work on my MacBook 13" and even smaller Windows laptops all the time.
Depends on type of work - would not prefer not to do photo or video editing if was doing that all day on small screen.

I, along with many many others, could NOT do without a real OS like OSX and/or Windows. There are things that just cannot be done with IOS alone.

At this rate, I think all such debates on iOS being sufficiently Pro/non-Pro should move to the Politics, Religion and Social Issues forum...

Each individual is going to have varying degrees of productivity needs satisfied by iPad Pro - some fully, some inadequately and a whole lot in the middle. Going back and forth on this is pointless - no matter how many threads are spawned, you will never close the gap until you "make most of the people happy most of the time".

I get so tired when people post stupid posts like the one TS did that do nothing but inflame emotions instead of encouraging productive discourse on this issue....

People insist their own view is the only right one and you are doing it wrong if you don't follow it.
That's just the way of the world now, not just this topic.

I own all devices, but know what i like and how i want to use it. i cant use a iPad as my main device.
Opinion gets taken, or to be more accurate given as a fact.

While i fully agree with you, if we took this approach most threads would also qualify for the same logical reasoning.. what colour, size, memory, brand,........

My point still stands though... That there are many of us that can, and are. :)

I am a surface fan but i can see how it will never satisfy many as a tablet. However it is a great device with access to top software, excellent pen functionality, mouse and trackpad functionality, and an ability to drive external monitors. Microsoft is only 4 years into to being a hardware company. Ultimately it will be pro applications vs variety of apps

You need all three a MacBook Air 13", iPad pro 12.9" and a iPhone 6s plus as they all work with each other and none do it all.

This is my collection and works for my way of life.

The sad part is, most android phones play better with OSX than the iPhone does...lol. It's a joke that you would ever "need" all three. Two of them are the same device; no one needs an iphone and an ipad - they can't do anything differently. And the macbook air is so horribly underpowered, why even spend your money on it if you're using an ipad or iphone?

Macbook pro + any phone on the market. That's a solid combo.

I've had iPhones since the original in 2007. I've had Mac laptops and desktops since 2005. I've never had any issues with using my phones with my laptops and desktops and they have worked seamlessly. Whilst I have never owned although I have used Android phones I find it hard to believe that they would interact better with Mac laptops and desktops then the iPhones do. The iPhones are made by Apple who also make the Mac laptops and desktops. Whilst the OS is different between them I would disagree they are not designed to work together seamlessly or at least far better then any non iOS based phone.

Then again I would never buy an Android phone as iPhones for me personally offer a far superior experience. Apple products are by no means perfect but they are far more friendly and offer far better ease of use then most other brands out there. I've had far less problems and issues since I swapped over to Apple hardware then I did when using other brands especially a mixture of other brands.

But his point still stands... that many more of us that can't and wont. :)

Some can use iPads as laptop replacement, some can't. None of us knows which group is larger.

If you are thinking of people who can use the iPad as their only computer, I admit, that number is probably still not that big. But if you consider the number of people who can now get by with a desktop + iPad instead of a desktop + laptop, then that number could be considerably big.

I have decided to get the lasagna instead of the chicken marsala for lunch today. Chicken marsala just can't cut it.

Oops I meant to start a new thread for this...

I think you can get close, even juggle past it, but not do it well. I just had to edit a Word document that was sent to me via. email. I wound up saving it to Dropbox and then using a limited version of Word to review/edit it. And then I had to select text by dragging the little dots across sections of the document and then trying to figure out where the commands were that I regularly use in Office.

Does it work? Yes. Does it work, well? Not really. As I said before, each device gets me about 75% of the way there, meaning I buy 200% of what I need for 150% of the solution.

What I really want is a rMB with a touch screen. The size/weight/keyboard of that critter is exactly what I want.

In my specific use case it only took getting used to the limited version of word. But I didn't use the extra functions ever. Ymmv as they say.
But a touch rMB? Just use a 4 finger swipe on a rMB and you know why it won't happen. And you also understand the design of the smart keyboards.

I want more screen real estate than a 9.7 iPad but the 12.9 doesn't really have keyboards that produce a satisfying solution to me that doesn't turn the device into a 13" pro. The 12" rMB fits the middle ground, plus keyboard, to almost exactly what I want. And if it happened to come with touch, perfect.

No HIS point does not... YOURS does, as he said: "the iPad cannot replace the macbook, it's simply too crippled an OS, the iPad is a consumption device, plain and simple and Apple has shown no plans to change that for the future."

His statement says an iPP cannot replace a MacBook at all. But I said it can for many, just as you said it can't for many. ;)

I have decided to get the 2016 rMB as I have learned I need a full OS on the go. iOS just can't cut it. Just outside the return policy for the iPad. It was great but just not enough for my needs.

I would never just have an iPad. Still need a computer but there are some who do not.

Computer first and then an iPad for me.

iOS 10 you are joking right. If Apple can't be bothered to update the 9.7 Pro with a Flash Option they are not adding anything new, besides a HOME App, new Photo Album options and thats all.
