International shipping is not that difficult..it's a customs form..a trip to the PO and go..if they want you to mark something different it's, sorry I can't and won't do that..

I think of not shipping outside of the U.S. to include me as an APO customer as lazy, and probably somone I don't want to deal with anyway.

APO (and FPO) is not really an issue since it is still essentially a domestic address anyway. While I have shipped internationally, it's simply much easier to just ship domestically - no worries about customs forms, varying international laws on what can and can't be shipped, local laws on returns, warranties, etc.

the bottom line, for many, is non-US buyers are such a small fraction of the total that the few extra dollars generally aren't worth the hassles - whether they are real or perceived. It's simply a business decision and not part of some larger, veiled, conspiracy or POV.

Thanks to the many posters who provided advice and shared their experiences. Hearing that some sellers have gotten success through this process is reassuring. I will keep you posted.

----------

Ebay will side with you. Don't worry about it. I have heard numerous anecdotes about this exact issue (mostly with car parts though). Just don't worry about it too much, okay? :D

How much did you sell the old MBP for anyway? I'm actually looking to purchase an old one.

The item sold for $799.00 USD.

----------

Ebay and PayPal screwed me over before. I sold a $100 Best Buy gift card. Buyer paid right away. A day before the limit to file a complaint they filed saying the card never arrived. I shipped it via USPS with just an envelope. I had a picture showing the name/address and receipt with it. I provided ebay and paypal with that, showing the gift card was used in their city a few days after I sent it out. I had about a lot off 100% positive feedback, the buyer had 50 or so negative feedback(they scammed other people right at the same time and they left that in the comment section). ebay said it was in paypal's hands. Paypal sided with the buyer saying I didn't have proof. So I was out a $100 gift card and about $100.

Now I avoid ebay as much as possible, Amazon is better. Occasionally I will sell larger items on there but try other options first like craigslist.

Hopefully ebay does right for you, I would think they would because of the evidence..but any normal person can see mine too so who knows..

Sorry to hear that. This is what gets me nervous... having hard/strong evidence and still loosing the case.

I have about 48 hours to hear back from eBay on what they want/need me to provide as evidence. Hopefully the ~12 mins of video (320MB) is enough.

----------

before I forget I limit my listing to US only, not even Canada. This will help you down the road. Also you can restrict bids from people with 0 feedback.

I have had success with international buyers. I at least recall Canada and UK. I think the 0 feedback is the red flag. I should have known about (and used) the option to limit to buyers with a certain amount of positive feedback. Sigh... live and learn. :-(

----------

I agree eBay is overflowing with scumbags....but if you take appropriate measures, you should be just fine.

-ALWAYS ship with signature confirmation on anything valuable. I ship via USPS priority because it's integrated with eBay/paypal and you actually get a break on shipping.

-ALWAYS be clear about your refund/return/exchange policy

-ALWAYS document the item's condition meticulously; detailed photos, 100% honest item description, a "boot and box" video if you feel it's necessary, etc.

-Use eBay's included methods of protecting yourself; limit buyers who are international, have zero or negative feedback, don't use paypal, etc.

-ALWAYS double check everything. I know more than one less than savvy acquaintance who has fallen for the "fake paypal payment email" scam....

-While I admit I don't (usually) do it myself....It's a smart idea to insure the item in transit. If it gets lost....I'm willing to bet eBay will side with the buyer.
Include half the cost as a handling charge if it's too steep, but remember most savvy buyers factor in shipping costs when bidding. Free shipping really does attract attention (I know I use the free shipping filter regularly when searching on eBay, amazon, etc).

Usually, if you at least follow 1 & 3 to the letter......eBay has your back. Usually.

*Edit*

Oh, and to the guy complaining about people not shipping to Canada....

While I DO offer to ship to Canada (ONLY- nothing else international).....I dislike it because 9 times out of 10 the buyer will contact me asking me to de-value the item in the customs declaration or mark it as a gift, etc. It's your law- not mine. I'm not going to leave myself open to shenanigans just so you can avoid some taxes or whatever.

This are great tips! Thank you!

I looked into using UPS, for better tracking. But the price was exponentially higher. I ended up using USPS Priority International insured. I have the tracking information showing when someone picked it up from the PO. I suppose even though I did not select signature confirmation, since it was insured, the probably required signature. Though for this case, the buyer has already admitted to have received the item.

I did not specifically state policy on returns/exchanges/refunds because eBay had an option where I selected "No returns or exchanges". Though that omits refunds. I now know not to leave myself open to that. Though calling out things like no refunds would raise concern with the buyer, possibly limiting bids.

The description was honest. I have high-res pictures (about 8) taken with a 5D, which are very detailed. I also have video (12 mins, 320MB+) showing the machine operational, down to reading the serial # and other hardware information. This is key. And thanks to my best friend who told me to take the video!

I have seen the fake email PayPal scam, used against me via Craigslist. I am much more guarded when using Craigslist, since it seems to be the wild wild west of selling... But I did not fall for it. In fact, via Craigslist, I usually opt for local, in-person transactions at a public place. This has served me well, because I can show the buyer the item working and get money on the spot, closing the deal for good. Though that adds a whole new level of personal safety concerns, specially if selling valuable goods. Opt for a very public place, like inside a mall or a busy coffee shop.

Do you mean to limit users who use or do not use PayPal?

Ieo's Suggestions Are Appreciated...

... but how is one paid if you don't accept payments via PayPal?

I have a number of collectible cameras that I am considering selling on eBay, but I have been hesitant to do so because of the possibility of being scammed.

BTW, I have spent a fair amount of time in Canada over the years on both the east and west coasts. I have found Canadians to generally be gracious and welcoming people; at one point I seriously considered emigrating to Canada.

On the other hand, acfusion29's posts illustrate that there are jerks in every country... I don't condemn an entire culture because of the actions of a few people.

Good news everyone!

Good news: eBay closed the case and decided on my favor (sellers)!

eBay did not request additional information from me. They took a week and today notified me that they will not be issuing a refund to the buyer and that they have unlocked my PayPal account!

Needless to say, I am relief and grateful that honesty prevailed!

Thanks to everyone that gave me tips and advice on how to protect myself and what to do when things do not go exactly as they should! Very helpful, especially in helping me calm down and keep a positive outlook!

I'm really happy to hear things worked out for you. I sold a couple of laptops on eBay within the past month and I was super worried about people with 0 feedback purchasing my item as well as someone buying it, swapping out the parts, and then trying to open a case against me.

I ALWAYS make sure to do insured shipping, delivery signature required, and I take a ton of pictures and video of the unit working prior to me then videotaping myself boxing it up so I can send it out. There is no such thing as too much evidence IMO.

As for people getting upset that people in the US won't ship internationally...I just don't feel comfortable doing it. I don't have anything against CAN, I just believe that we have much better odds of resolving issues in your home country as opposed to international.

Nice to hear, they sided with you.

I used to use ebay back a lot in the late 90's up until about 2002. I had similar issues starting around then, and I got tired of all the fees with ebay and I couldn't find many good deals there anymore, even though I still have 100% positive feedback.

A lot of scammers from Nigera lurk on ebay, which forces you to use paypal, and of course there are more fees involved with that.

I just Sold a Mac Mini yesterday that I had listed on eBay and Amazon. Luckily is sold on Amazon so I closed my eBay auction. I just hate dealing with eBay.

I am very glad to hear that you won the case and sorry you had this happen in the first place.
The truth was on your side :)

I recently sold a lot of Apple parts and products including two iPhone 4 32GB on eBay. The after sale support was a nightmare. Everything from battery life to brightness to SSD life. All products were in excellent condition, packed exceptionally well and in retail packaging where available. Basically, the buyer held me hostage and forced a 20% refund to prevent a false fraud claim. Last time I use eBay. So sad as I've sold 20+ mint condition smartphones in the past and had perfect positive feedback.

Ebay is rife full of scum right now all the old scams are coming back, all it basically is on there is jobless people that spend all day on there sniping people out of a deal and then screwing the seller over on the basis that they don't really have the money.

4 months ago I bought a motorbike on there and paid the guy by check, he seemed genuine but the delivery day cam and promptly went and no bike, at this point I was getting angry because I get annoyed with missing work for deliveries, I rang the guy up he said he got the money (I know the check cleared) 7 weeks wen't by and it turned out he didn't live where he said he did on all his auctions, I managed to get he's home address due to the check I sent.

I rang him and said "listen mate do you have the bike? I'll drive down and pick it up" he slammed down the phone, rang him again he said I threatened him so now I lost it and did resort to using the "I know where you live mate" and he turned around and said "how?" and I said "due to the address you gave me when I sent the check" he promptly realised his mistake in letting me pay by check and said "I'll send you a check with the money" 3-4 weeks later that didn't arrive rang him "there must be a problem" 1 week later my money arrives paid in full.

I looked into it further and he basically threatens people and uses his friends to give him good feedback and tries to sell items he dose not own, he never owned one motor bike in his life, let alone the 10 he was selling, he made his ebay page look like he was an actual dealer in bikes but not so.

i hate sellers like you. why won't you ship to Canada? what's the big deal? as long as i'm paying for the shipping with tracking and insurance, WHAT IS THE BIG DEAL?

i'm a legit buyer, and seller on eBay (with a ton of feedback), and when i happen to find a wicked deal i can't even buy it.

let me hear your stupid ass explanation.

How un-canadian like! As a fellow Canadian, I'll give you some advice. Stop posting. You make us look bad. Honestly, if I was to buy something on Ebay but the product doesn't ship to my Igloo, I'd just find another place that sells the thing (which isn't to hard) or I'll just settle for Beaver Tails and Syrup.
Oh my, so many stereotypes towards myself :p

Keep on smiling eh!

That's quite an ignorant and unfounded statement to make.

Because the stereotype that Canadians are friendly and nice is completely false.

Many reasons. Customs, Taxes, Legality of International Transport of Goods, Laws of other countries regarding the protection of seller from fraud. I could go on but I will simply end with this. Because I do not want to. :) Thanks for asking

+1 for me on this.

Glad it worked out for the op.

This is why I only use Craigslist and show up wearing a black ski mask and a water pistol. Nobody has tried to scam me yet. Even got some things for free.

I will respond for the poster you asked a question of, your response to him is enough for me to never ship to you. Rude is an understatement. Honestly are you for real....

typical american..

there's a reason why a lot of people hate your country.

you idiots make it seem like canada is as bas as nigeria.. we're on the same ****in continent and you can't ship to anyone here?

Wish the people in China would ship to Taiwan. They ship to USA but not across the Taiwan strait. Or they'll ship to USA for free or to Taiwan for $20.
