Nope, still not covered! We had a huge argument, and he was constantly asking why didn't you bring it back within the first year of warranty. And when i had to replace the fan that was like $80. My next stop is massionville Apple store next week.

Hows yours macbook now?

Waiting on screen...should be here next week.

... and he was constantly asking why didn't you bring it back within the first year of warranty...

Most likely, they were asking you that because they already knew the answer (i.e.: You're not the original owner and you bought it used.) Especially if they looked up the serial number. They were probably waiting for you to stop lying ... or at the very least stop hiding the truth or being evasive.

You may not have gotten any help if you had been honest with them, but being evasive or not telling the truth certainly did not help matters, especially if they already knew (or suspected) that you weren't the original owner.

It sounds (to me anyway) like they gave you multiple chances to "come clean" as it were (i.e.: constantly asking you why you didn't bring it back within the first year,) and you failed with every chance they gave you. Perhaps things could have turned out for the better if you had just answered them honestly ... I guess you'll never know now. Good luck with that second store!

In my experience, honesty goes a long way when it comes to Apple. My Macbook Air had a battery issue since the day I unboxed it (buzzed very loud when charging and held only about 2.5 hours on a good day). Because I was moving countries to start university at the same time, I had no time to send it back to Apple and wait for a replacement, so I just put up with it. When things calmed down a bit, I brought it into the Apple Store and they offered to change the battery under warranty - only downside: I had to let go of the computer for 3 WEEKS (!!), which was impossible during term time. So, I never got it done and kept using the battery, which I knew was faulty. In a sense it was my own fault, when the battery then completely blew up and dislocated the keyboard and trackpad 3 years later.

I went back to Apple in my last week of remaining Apple Care and told them, that I had been offered the battery replacement years ago, but that I never took them up on it, because I couldn't be 3 weeks without the computer while studying and working. They reminded me that batteries were consumable and not necessarily covered under Apple Care, especially after 3 years of daily usage... but in a gesture of good will they would replace it for me nevertheless.

I doubt I would have gotten the same result if I had gone in there all upset telling them "My battery suddenly blew up and I don't know why, I didn't do anything." ... They would have probably just said "Yeah, it's a 3 year old battery, pay for the replacement or get lost." ;)

If I were you, I'd put on a more remorseful attitude: I'd emphasize that I'm a high school student and spent all my savings from my summer jobs on my first Mac, because I love Apple so much. Unfortunately it was only enough money for a used model that turned out to have a graphics fault. Since there are various recalls going round right now, I was wondering if this machine was covered too or if they could help me out at all? I feel really stupid wasting all my hard-earned money on a broken Mac, but I was just so excited for it. I learned my lesson though: never again from Craigslist. :(

I feel with such a remorseful and honest approach they might be more willing to help you out on their discretion.

Update: So I got my replacement screen in....worse then the one I had. I am returning it to the eBay seller. I may try another "new" one on eBay or just suck it up and have Apple do the repair for $310. That way I have a 90 day warranty and they will look over the rest of the computer and if they end up issuing a recall in the future I can get reimbursed.

You can't keep the old screen probably

Ordered a supposedly "new" screen for $240 on eBay....we will see what happens

I just don't understand why Apple makes a graphics card issue recall, but no ghosting recall, and we gotta pay it. I just don't understand why they can't issue a recall, I know it was my fault for buying it ( I already knew it had the ghosting problem before I bought it) , but still!

Hello everyone,

I bought a used MacBook Pro with retina and it has a ghosting problem mid 2012, it's out of warranty, will Apple still replace it? Or is it out of pocket

I have the exact same model and I also had ghosting issues since day 1 but I was too lazy to take it in because I found it to be "bearable". I did however decide to finally take it in ~1 month before my warranty expired. They replaced the screen and I have had no ghosting issues since.

This was free of charge because I still had that ~1 month of warranty left. Outside of warranty, expect to pay around 500-700 USD for the repair ( assuming that they'll also have to replace your screen... which is very likely ). Maybe Canada is a bit cheaper... just take it in and let them give you a repair quote.

1) You knew the computer was out of warranty.

2) You knew the computer had a ghosting problem that only shows in a test.

3) You bought the computer in spite of the aforementioned facts, and then want to blame Apple for not following through and making you whole on a problem that only shows itself in a test, instead of daily usage.

The only one to blame in this scenario, is you.

In this situation, 1+2 cannot equal 3.

Hopefully this is my last update. I got my new screen in and it is nearly perfect. Small marks on the outside, but the LCD and display are perfect. No burn in, no mara spots, no dead pixels. It is a revision 2 LG.

So in total it cost me $240 for the screen and I am thinking I can get at least $180 for my lcd that I removed. I will be putting it up on eBay shortly. If I can do this whole project for under $100 I will consider it a great success.

Hope your new screen will last! I Wish the best for your screen! LOL

I just don't understand why someone would get so upset about a problem you knew about before you bought it. You then try to get it fixed for free when you jolly well know you don't have a leg to stand on, despite this you made a big scene about it in-store, and then continue to moan about it here. It just doesn't make sense.

You're a chancer, albeit not a very good one.

There is a terminal command that will tell you what model display you have.

Thanks, yeah I was aware of that. I just wondered how you specifically determined it was a 'Revision 2', I assume there is something in the string but what is it?
