i need to go give blood again.... but it always makes me lightheaded and the last time i went i barely weighed enough and my iron was too low.

You mean AB-, thats the rarest blood type and can recieve any blood type due to its lack of antigens, but can only be given to other people with AB-.

AB+ isnt so rare, but it has the same properties, i.e. can recieve other blood types but can only be given to other people with AB+

I donate my AB- so i can recieve preferential treatment if i ever need a blood transfusion when im ill, which is how any blood donation system should work really.

On the subject of rare blood...

During a recent tour of a local blood donation processing center I was interested to find out that there are a handful of people who have no blood type. These people, one of which lives here in Denver, have to constantly bank their own blood in case they should ever find themselves in an unexpected situation where they need blood.

Even if it is a completely anonymous donation, and whether you're saving a life or just giving a family more time, I assure you, to them it means the world.
Look at this news story! UCLA got permission from everyone involved and staged a meeting between a leukemia patient and all of her (previously anonymous) blood and platelet donors. That's gotta be unusual.

I'm a AB - ... One of the rarest in the world ;) ... Unfortunately that sucks for me.

EDIT: After reading this thread, It looks as though I can receive any type of blood.

I would but Im not 18, I probably will then. I dont mind needles, I have already given enough blood for medical reasons to fill a little plastic 2 inch pool (I just relized how disturbing that sounds:p)
Same here. I have had so much blood drawn in my lifetime, both by nurses and myself, that I am surprised that I still function. As for donating, I probably will at some point when I reach the required age and if they let me.

During my undergrad days, I didn't give blood but I donated sperm. $10 per donation.
That $15,000 came in handy.

Lol, I am somehow in disbelief, but I can see 1500 donations.... 2 a day in ~2 years or ~2.5 years factoring out weekends.

Also, I can't donate because of malaria (don't have it nor have I ever had it). I come from Honduras and travel there every end of semester. So I am not in the US for minimum 6 months they require before accepting the donation.

I have a rare type as far as mac rumors members. :) IDK if that is a good thing or not lol
Which type? What's "good" as a blood type depends on whether you are going to be a donor or going to be a recipient.

Just a thought... They should really check your OS preference when you get a transfusion, since I'm sure Mac users would rather get their blood from another Mac user.

How does it feel to lose your blood, do feel a bit light after giving blood?
Some people do. That's why they want you to sit for a while afterwards and have a snack and drink some juice. If you jump right up and head out the door you might feel light-headed or dizzy from low blood pressure.

If you mean lightheaded, I get that when I just have blood samples taken. Doesn't last long though. After my last blood test I forgot the way out of the doctors office and felt the tiniest bit dizzy.

I guess in my case it would last long. I suffer from Vasovagal syncopes, which are triggered by blood. So basically I would pass out. And then, I'd spend an entire day feeling dizzy and extremely weak.

If I wasn't like that I would donate, though.

Hello everyone!

We are having an official MacRumors Blood Drive, and it would be great if you could all participate.

Visit the thread for more information!

Is that for real?

Yeah:

You should not give blood if you have AIDS or have ever had a positive HIV test, or if you have done something that puts you at risk for becoming infected with HIV.

You are at risk for getting infected if you:

* have ever used needles to take drugs, steroids, or anything not prescribed by your doctor
* are a male who has had sexual contact with another male, even once, since 1977
* have ever taken money, drugs or other payment for sex since 1977
* have had sexual contact in the past 12 months with anyone described above
* received clotting factor concentrates for a bleeding disorder such as hemophilia
* were born in, or lived in, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Congo, Equatorial Guinea,Gabon, Niger, or Nigeria, since 1977
* since 1977, received a blood transfusion or medical treatment with a blood product in any of these countries, or
* had sex with anyone who, since 1977, was born in or lived in any of these countries.

I wasn't commenting on controversy, just explaining why I couldn't. I gave no opinion one way or the other.

I was not aware that homosexuals weren't allowed to give blood, and I understand why now, I was just shocked as I assumed it was a prejudiced thing. Thanks for explaining it Lee.
