I feel scammed because....

a upgrade in storage requires a update in processing speed. Therefore it cancels each other out.

Meaning, there was no significant upgrade in the Touch series

That's just plain wrong. Increasing storage has no effect whatsoever on processing speed. It's just storage. You could have a terabyte of flash RAM in there and it still wouldn't have any effect.

The fact is, the 32/64GB versions of the touch got significant CPU and GPU upgrades, not to mention double the storage. Not quite the same level as going from a PS1 to a PS2, but not so far off either. A big increase in processing speed and a big GPU upgrade with abilities that are closer to a desktop GPU. So yes, it was a significant update, and no amount of childish whining about cameras will make it otherwise.

If there's going to be any complaining, it should be about the non-upgrade of the 8GB version. The sooner the old hardware goes away (also the $99 iPhone), the bigger the user base for the new hardware, and the sooner bigger&better apps can be written to take advantage of it.

Scammed isn't the word so much as "disappointed". A few were counting so much on a Touch with Camera that they sold off their old Touch. I'm actually delighted, as the money I don't need to spend on a new Touch ($399) can now buy me a Zune HD ($220) AND a new Nano ($149). Then I can take my wife out to lunch with the savings.

Nano fans should be happy though, unless they bought the old model for $199last week.

Funny... I can buy an iPod touch for $199 not $399. And I still have $20 for over 75,000 apps while I have 0 apps to choose from on a Zune.

Some of us are really disappointed about the lack of camera (myself being one of those people), but even more disappointing is that Apple made basically no changes from the 2G. So little, they're not even distinguishing it as a generation. Voice control, new earphones (which can be purchased separately) and faster hardware isn't going to get many, if any people to upgrade. Apple didn't need to add a camera to make the update worthwhile, they needed to add new features. Which they did. But they're incredibly minor features that aren't compelling to existing iPod touch users.

cry me a river...

I just want to know if Apple is considering these devices "3G" or not... they don't call it that anywhere on their website (although they do call the new nano 5G). All of the "3G" cases that started popping up on websites (i.e. BestBuy.com) were pulled. Makes you wonder if the real "3G" is still coming...

I absolutely agree with the OP and after reading several posts here I have my own comments on this matter. Firstly, Apple has just about every ground covered in terms of multimedia, computers, phones, music and movie purchasing and music players. The app store gave the iPod Touch new life and Apple's M.O. about the iPhone was about software making the device live longer and not just adding more features year after year.

I just love some of the MR forum members and their convenient way of complaining. If they bought a new Apple product and Apple comes out with a new model a month later the MR fanboys go into labor saying, "I got screwed, I'm pissed Apple released a new model with more features". This time Apple did very little to the iPod Touch and now some people are pissed that there's no reason to upgrade.

Speaking of upgrading, please MR, drop off this self-centered attitude, MR forum members don't even make up 1/10th of Apple's customer base. Apple is not sitting around figuring out reasons for us to upgrade, they are trying to grab MORE customer base, not just pleasing the existing customers.

To a lot of people that never bought an iPod but were considering one the current iPod Touch does way more than they expected especially with the app store and OS 3.0 giving the Touch so much more functionality.

There's no reason for anyone here to be "disappointed", what do you need to upgrade for? Just for the sake of upgrading and having the latest and greatest for bragging? If anyone sold their iPod Touch based on hype (not created by Apple) from bloggers and rumor sites then it's their own fault if the upgrade wasn't what you hoped for. I, for one, am glad that Apple spends more time on softwares for the iPod Touch and iPhone instead of adding new features so we can keep our products longer.

Wow. Interesting attitude. The Touch came out 2 years ago and there are things that existing customers would like to see added or changed. Your attitude is 'Shut up and be happy with what you get."

Apple hasn't done much than no-brainer updates to the hardware since the Touch came out. It's not unreasonable to hope that a company that to prides itself on innovation would add something significant to a 2 year old platform. The 3.0 or 3.1 software upgrades were no big deal either. Apple has very little to show for effort on the Touch for the last 2 years. Now, if you want to argue that it's good enough, fine. I use mine a lot and don't want to trade it for someone else's product, Still, there's room for it to get a lot better and I'm disappointed that it's stagnant.

As to the Apple store, yes, there's 75K apps out there for the Touch and iPhone. Maybe 100 good ones.

I never understood the big deal, anyway.

I've used a lot of mobile phone cameras, and not one that I have ever seen can take a picture even remotely as good as a cheap (<$100) digital camera.

I'm good with letting my iPod or phone be just that. If it has a camera, that's fine - if it doesn't, no big deal, because the camera isn't all that great, anyway.

I went to bestbuy today and they had the label for the new ipod touch as 3G.

well usually when people pay 200$ for a 'media' device, they expect it to have a basic feature that 30$ cell phones have.

and when the model under the iPod touch has it, it get kind of frustrating.

Like making phone calls? Or sending text messages?

How many .mp3 players out there have cameras?

If Apple had put a camera in it, people would just b!tch about something else it doesn't have, like a waffle iron or tire jack or something.

Really?:eek: Which PMP has a camera? Internal, not external. And cameras, cellphones, and camcorders don't count as a PMP.

Personally I thought it was a real shocker that most of the rumors I thought might happen didn't.

A majority of us wanted a camera on the iPod touch. But due to hardware issues it was not present at the refresh. But at least if was given a hardware bump which is good.

In my opinion I was upset that it didn't have any new features but now i don't think it needs a camera. Many of us have cellphones which have a few megapixels or more.

I just bought the new 32GB iPod touch and I can say the hardware boost alone and price is justified when you see how fast and quick it is from the previous gen.

Apple are probably gonna add a camera refresh in the near future but I won't be complaining.

I just want to add one thing, adding a camera wouldnt only satisfy the "hardcore" MR readers.

For example take me. I am what you could say an average consumer (even tho I have an account here, its pretty new and I barely come check stuff out). I wanted a camera because I cant carry my big ass Nikon around everyday and there are plenty of times where I wished I could take a photo but couldnt due to lack of a camera. So going to the park on a weekend, or to watch a football game where I wouldnt normally take the camera but would deffo take an iPod touch is a perfect example of why a camera would be incredibly useful not only to me, but to a big percentage of an "average" iPod touch buyer.

Finally, it makes much more sense for the Touch to have a camera than the Nano... the Touch integrates it more seamlessly with its WiFi connection, not a cluncky USB system to upload which is frankly pretty un-Apple.

What leads me to my conclussion, I believe the reason why it didnt get a camera is because they deemed the lower-res VGA camera that works on the Nano to not be up to standards for the higher-res and bigger screened Touch... they will add a camera to the Touch when they figure out how to put a proper iPhone camera in there which atm they cant due to lack of space.

My 2c.

come on big fella, if usb is clunky then all of apples products are too. not a lot of apps use wifi in that way unfortunately, or hadn't you noticed?

For me, the problem isn't that Apple scammed anyone, they never promised anything so no scam occured. The problem is the Touch line feels like its standing still, there's no compelling reason to upgrade from (in my case) a first gen model which is deeply annoying. A camera would have been a very nice addition and given it that psychological tick of approval (well, I'm getting a new unit for my money with an extra shiny thing) whereas right now it's hard to justify the £230 expense just for a speed bump and extra memory.

See, for me, with my 1G, I've been playing the same games on my wifes 3GS vs my 1G ipod, and the difference has been boggling. Games that had framerate issues on my 1G, were so silky smooth on my wifes phone that I was stunned.

The general speed of the 3GS vs the 1G ipod is ridiculous. Then you have the extra ram which makes surfing a pleasure rather than a chore. Regardless of camera, the upgrade from a 1G or 2G ipod to the new 3G is vast.

You never see complaints from iMac or Mac Book users when they upgrade to the latest laptop saying "jeez the only difference between my new macbook and my old one is that this is much faster, what a rip-off".

The ipod touches are best thought of as pocket computers - by and large all you'll see year on year are faster processors, faster graphics chips, and more memory. You may eventually find cameras and gps creeping in there too, which would be great.

What's your point? I explained the POV of I and some of the other users. If you don't agree with that, that's your own thing. No need to come in here and troll.

This thread (which he started) was created specifically to troll. There's no other point.
