I was in your shoes a couple of months ago..I have a powermac G5 and a dying macbook, so I decided to get a new pro when they got refreshed. It is an amazing machine, I would be 110% happy with it if...the ipad hadn't been invented. Seriously, get yourself a desktop with a nice screen (24" or +) = imac 27" or macmini..doesn't matter really. I am taking an engineering phd and the mini is good already for your needs..(my old 1st gen macbook still is anyway).

If the ipad isn't enough for when you're around (but believe me, it is), get a white macbook...with those specs still kicks it!

You'll be an happier guy...and your bank account will be too!

I already have an very powerful PC desktop (well, it was when I built it in January 2009) with a 26.5" screen. I don't ever want an iPad, but that's another story altogether.

Don't get it!!!! Seriously~ Mac is just expensive... Windows is better than OS X :D

Trust me

lol.

(In all seriousness though, from what I've used so far (the Macs at school), I really do prefer Windows. I like having my things organized the way I want them to be. Of course, maybe I'm just not experienced enough with OSX.)

Organization options on OS X are definitely not inferior to windows in any way. Well that's how I feel using both OS on a daily basis.

The current line up of notebooks is really vast and you'll find that most (if not all) of them will meet your needs. There's pretty much a Mac notebook that's right for everyone. If you're going to be doing intensive gaming and running software for engineering, then I'd say definitely get the MBP. The standard run-of-the-mill MacBook line would be a good choice if you were a basic computer user that doesn't use any software that would really utilize advanced graphics, or CPU. You could find that it would work in your situation, but the extra 2 GB of memory in the MBP would do you a world of good. Also, Mac OSX is probably the most advanced OS out there today, but if you like the simplicity and feel of Windows, then Boot Camp or Parallels would be a good choice. I normally wouldn't do this, being the Mac fanboy that I am, but if you don't really care for Mac OSX, and just looking for good hardware, then maybe you should get a PC notebook. Like the OS, they're much more simple than Macs, and all the components very easy to upgrade. You can build your own computer that will run like a well-oiled machine without shelling out a grand or two to get a Mac just for the hardware notoriety.

Do you need the extra graphics?

Sounds like you already have a beefy desktop, why not consider the 13" mbp? Its portable, CPU RAM are good enough, and HDD is ok. Its graphics suffice for everything except for the high end games, although the 320m games really well too! I couldn't justify the steep increase of ~500 so I went for the 13 and I am very happy with the laptop and used the money I saved to go for an ssd! :D

For starters... freezing problem with current generation :)
You might lucky (and it is seems the odds lean towards your side :) and get one with freezing problems :D

Apple is not what it used to be anymore... so don't think that by getting a mac you'll get a robust machine without problems... and a perfect customer service (because Apple is known for answering to some problems with the... "within specification" answer... and freezing is getting on that list little by little)

sorry i cant help you out with this. I used a macbook air when i was in college and then got a pro once i graduated. I have been lovin macs ever since. But im sure there are better forums with less happy people to get opinions from.

I still find it weird that Windows 7 runs faster on my MBA than on a non-Apple laptop... is it just me lol? but yes Windows 7 is a great operating system, much better than Mac OSX (hopefully at the moment) in my opinion, especially on my MBA i can use Safari and VLC simultaneously and it doesn't come to a standstill :D  but i feel i have to mention the Drivers are beyond wank in Windows, so annoying, smooth out the scrolling Apple that's all i ask!!!

It was a consideration, but I just can't stand such a small screen resolution, and the increases in the other areas don't hurt either.

I have a 15 i5 MBP and my brother got a sony vaio Z (with the 1080 resolution) for a couple hundred more. I have to say i'm pretty jealous of the form factor of the vaio Z, despite many people on macrumors hating on it because its "plasticky".

If the low resolution is too low for you and the 15in MBP costs too much though, definitely look somewhere else. I had the 13 for awhile and the low resolution irritated the crap out of me when i had to write papers and do real work.

I've used a Windows all my life and the most regrettable thing about a Mac is it's lack of games or their high costs (games almost always come out first for the PCs)

Also, the Macbook does get extremely hot when running programs or visiting flash sites so I always need to put the laptop on top of a book or something lest my thighs start getting burned (it's pretty darn hot)

I've had my new MBP for about a month now and I love it - the best thing about the macbook is just I *love* using it. It's like the difference between driving a Lexus and a Toyota - the Toyota runs just fine, and does the job but the Lexus adds the enjoyability factor

I'm going into university next year, and I will be using my MPB for practically everything, including running Logic Studio (one of the main reasons I want a MPB). I also plan to run Windows 7 from Boot Camp. I'm most likely getting my 15.4" MBP with the hi-res upgrade (no anti-gloss) in the coming days, and I'm having some last-minute apprehensions of making such a large purchase. Are there any reasons I shouldn't get one?

Don't get a MBP if you like bloatware. Get an HP if bloatware floats your boat. ;)

I have a 15" i7, it has its fair share of problems

here is a list:
1.) it gets ridiculously hot
2.) if it gets too hot it shuts down...and when I game it shuts down unless I have a desk fan on top and a laptop cooler underneathe.
3.) it only runs fallout 3 on medium-low graphics, left 4 dead 2 is decent at medium...fallout 3 is a 2008 game so don't expect the 330m to survive for the next couple of years.
4.) the track pad is a pain in the ass...if you enable tap to click, your palms will move the mouse cursor and maybe click...some fanboys will be like "your typing posture sucks" but thats a steve jobs crap cop out just like the iphone 4 you are holding it wrong remark.
5.) BOOTCAMP SUCKS, bootcamp turns off randomly, and the drivers go with them so I have had it where light buttons go off or the eject button stops working, you just have to restart that bootcamp program but I shouldnt even have to do this.
6.) I actually feel like OSX is not all its cracked up to be. Does everything just work? No not really, unless all you want to do is email and web browsing and basic consumer level crap.
7.) its heavy it was fine for a while, but its too big to fit into my backpack with my text books so I have to carry a separate bag with it.
8.) the silver on the palm rests get discolored. If you look at it straight on you can't see it, but if you look at it at an angle you can see where the silver is discoloring, I bought a moshi palm guard set and that works fine, but I shouldnt have to buy this crap. Its just like apple saying buy a bumper case if you are having problems.

Thanks, now this is the kind of response I was looking for, and I don't think any of those will be too big of a problem for me, seeing as any other laptop as an alternative will also have its fair share of problems. These, however, seem quite minor. I should look into the sizing of the 15.4" and see if it would fit in my laptop portion of my backpack. Thanks again.

1. any processor that's being used intensively will get hot, hot, hot; I still have my Dell from 4 years ago that has fans that won't stop whirring even with minimal cpu usage
2. I'm not sure about this - I have the mbp 13" and I've never had it shut down on me. However, the most intensive program I've run so far has been Halo
3. I run games on 1280*800 (the highest res my mbp can handle) so I can't say anything about this
4. While the trackpad isn't hit or miss, you will have to fiddle around with the settings to find that comfortable blend. I turned off two-finger right click, opting for the lower right corner, turned on tap-clicking, and disabled the 3-finger gesture (kept accidentally going back on browsers)
5. eh, also never had this problem (I installed windows XP via bootcamp and have used it to play halo)
6. I agree - OSX is hyped up to be some magical OS that everybody loves and uses seamlessly. It took me a few days to get used to the new shortcuts, file system organization and just finding my way around after being a Windows user all my life. That being said however, it's not like Windows 7 or any Windows for that matter offers any more than OSX offers. To the average consumer, OSX gives people what they'd probably use on a typical day and with tons more features than Windows offers (Microsoft Picture Viewer vs iPhoto?)
7. yea 17" is big for a laptop, I wouldn't go beyond 15"
8. yikes. This happened to my Dell since it has a plastic chassis and I was hoping it wouldn't happen to my mbp. D=

1) Yea, it gets pretty hot.
2) I haven't had my MBP 15in i7 shut down on me yet (knocks on wood).
3) I've played Team Fortress 2 and Starcraft II on my MBP 15 i7 pretty well. Don't buy this if your a hardcore gamer...but a variety of great games are out there for OSX, valve and blizzard mainly, more probably soon.
4) Agreed, i just turn off tap to click though. People get annoyed in class though when im clicking away =P.
5) Bootcamp isn't all that great. I use it to run stats in excel and thats about it. If you play MMORPG's (which usually requires windows) it does the job, but not as efficiently as a PC.
6) OSX and Windows work equally well to be honest. I don't really find OSX all that easier to use then a PC, i'm just too used to the large multi-touch trackpad now. I find that I still use google to find out how to do "x" on both OS's
7) This kinda varies from person to person. Its heavy to some, light to others. For me, i don't mind. The benefits of a large screen are more worthwhile to me then being uncomfortable for the less then 20 mins of walking i do around campus.
8) I haven't had my MBP for very long so i can't comment on this one. But my brothers 1 1/2 year old MBP has no discoloration whatsoever on his palm rest. Unless they changed the material or coating I don't see a problem. Moshi palm guards really are practically invisible anyways.

Dear God! What non-Apple laptop are you running Windows 7 on that the Macbook Air runs it faster? Some 1996 AST computer? On my 2.4 Ghz MBP, Windows 7 runs like it would on a 2.4 Ghz non-Mac.

Just a few quick comments:
-my 13" has never shutdown from heat, but it has gotten insanely hot. So hot that I can't touch the area about the f1/f2 keys without feeling like I'm being burned.
-Bootcamp drivers suck for Windows 7
-OSX has a strange feeling to it compared to win 7. Things are more "floaty" and "clunky" in OSX. In windows 7, things are snappier, but also tend to stall out more. Also, preview would be the equivalent of photo viewer. MS has an iPhoto like program available now for free download with their Windows Live stuff. Never used it, but it's supposed to be a step in the right direction.

A view from the 15inch perspective....

MBP's do get hot, uncomfortably hot to the touch at times. Internal temps on the other hand get to around 80*C for me after playing an hour+ of Team Fortress 2. Personally though, i don't play games on my lap. I want kids someday =).

OSX is floaty indeed. Clunky i'm not sure about that one. Floaty and clunky kinda seem like the opposite of eachother to me. Snappy is just kinda hard to compare, since we can't compare a PC and a Mac with exact same specs running native OSX and native Windows. Pop a SSD in either one of those machines and they'll feel "snappy" no matter what machine you use =). For me, the i7 definitely feels snappy when i compare it to a core2duo on the 13in. This heavily depends on what you use the computer for though.

I've heard really good things from picasa from google as another option for iphoto.
