here's the OP:
---------------------------------------------------
- mms
- video recording
- copy/paste
- ability to turn off sms pop-up notifications (with or w/out locking the phone)
- sms forwarding
- ability to send emails thru MobileMe using my created aliases and not just my master account

thanks

i'm growing tired of these very, very sub-par updates they roll out....utterly tired of them...

how is this lost in the tone? seems to me i was just casually voicing my opinion and others disagreed, rudefully.

We'd all love for the wishes on that list and plenty others to be implemented, but as with all things, it takes time - Time for an OS to mature.
Sure, a lot of those things are commonplace on even the simplest PAYG dumbphone, but that's only the result of the of Nokia, Symbian, LG, Samsung, Win-Mo, etc evolving there OS' over the past decade at least.
To expect a totally new OS to have ALL the features available, with no prior history behind it, is ludicrous(I aim this at all of us - yes, me included who have, in the past, demanded improvements yesterday).
It's like having a totally new expansion team in the NFL, reach the playoffs in their first season(Okay, Carolina and Jacksonville did that in 1995, but I'll overlook that :D)
HTC and some others would be nowhere, if they had to make their own OS. Even Google can't put out everything the users want right away.

In these "on demand" times that we live in, we just have to learn, or re-learn, to wait.
Personally, as things currently are, I'd take the iPhone 3G over any phone out there, every day of the week.

good reply and i agree. however, hasn't the iphone been out for about 2 years now (give or take)? I'm just amazed that japanese emoticons are a higher priortiy than anything on that list or something simple like copy/paste.

oh well.......maybe by iphone version 3 or 4, we'll have some of the basics.

They're adding the Japanese Emoticons because they'll sell more iPhones in Japan.

because that message should've been sent to apple.

Question: How good was Windows Mobile when it first came out? Did it have every feature that every cell phone had?

I had one of the first Windows Mobile phones released (an Orange SPV) and it was complete and utter garbage (Interestingly, you couldn't install 3rd party apps on it due to Orange's restrictions but they backed down with a firmware update after about 6 months).

However, 6 years and a lot of development later, I can honestly say Windows Mobile is now...

... Complete and utter garbage :D

LOL.....now, i will COMPLETELY agree with you on that (and i'm sure just about everyone else here can too!) :D

i believe the palm treo was one of the most frustrating phones i've ever owned. not sure how they are now, but back in teh day with win mobile 5.0, it was horrific and always caused me problems.

...something simple like copy/paste.

Explain "simple."

Unless you're a software engineer, you're probably not in a position to judge what is "simple" or not with regards to software/firmware features.

As far as the "lackluster" updates, I've been impressed and glad for them. Version 2.0 was a major upgrade and we have NEEDED (as opposed to "wanted") the subsequent updates to address the bugs that came with the big upgrade. Would I rather have MMS or stability? Hmmm...I think I'll go with stability, thankyouverymuch.

oh, i absolutely agree with you in regards to wanting stability over extra features; however, when apple releases an update that has japanese emoticons instead of....say copy/paste (or use whatever else i have on the list), i find it disappointing.

as for "simple"....how about this: 3 finger swipe on the text, then use your nose to open up the menu options, followed by a toe swipe diagonally to confirm the cut, ending with a tongue lick to paste it like a stamp in an email? then again...not a programmer, so not sure if this would work.

The complicated part is not in designing the finger gestures needed. There is a lot of work that needs to take place under the hood to add a clipboard and get it to work nicely with existing applications that were written without the need to support copy-and-paste. Simply drawing a button on the screen doesn't automatically make it do something useful.

Maybe the addition of the Japanese stuff took priority as getting the iPhone into Japan was more important to Apple than copy/paste and MMS. Adding copy/paste and MMS would probably mostly benefit existing users whereas new language support opens the market to many new users. They already got the money from the existing users, but adding new ones means fresh new money, too. It's probably also considered "low-hanging fruit" as it likely didn't require much engineering effort like copy/paste and MMS would.

I do agree with the OP in some respects. Certainly the stability upgrades have been worthwhile, but we've also seen such new features as different icons for 3G, Edge and GPRS, and the upcoming redesign of the Safari address bar. I agree that they've added the Japanese Emoticons to increase their laclustre sales over there, but as a company Apple should be looking at what it's customers have been asking for and prioritising there.

The problem with Apple as a company is that, more than most, it seems to have an army of rabid fanboys behind it (no offence to anyone on this forum, not saying anyone here is included) and they seem to know that whether they give their customers what they're asking for or not those customers are still going to buy the next iPhone, no questions asked. I suspect that some or most of the features the OP has asked for will be held off until the next iPhone, when they will be announced at the Keynote to resounding whoops of joy from the audience. That way they sell a new phone off the back of features which are included in most other phones and their customers have been asking for since 3 years ago. I suspect they'll probably hold out on letting TomTom et al release their Navigation software until this time also, so that they've got something good to show.

Copy and paste is not such an increadibly hard feature to include at all. As someone who has developed a lot of software in the past, all it really involves is reserving an area of the memory for a clipboard, and then implimenting a standard menu which will come up when a certain gesture is performed (e.g. user draws a circle on the screen) containing the options to cut/copy/paste. The most difficult part I can see for them is deciding on a method for the text selection. Actually copying or pasting it ifrom/into any area of any program is increadibly easy.

EDIT: For what it's worth, my implimentation for selecting text if I were working for Apple would be as follows (example selecting text in a page displayed in safari); You scroll to the area of text that you want. Then you put your finger at the start of the area you want to highlight. This would normally be interpreted as wanting to scroll the page again or select a link, but instead of moving (to scroll) or removing (to select a link) your finger you hold it down for two seconds. This begins the text selection, and you drag it to where you want it to end. Once selection has occured the OS knows that you'll probably be cutting or copying now so your next touch of the screen will do one of the following things: If you complete the menu gesture (in the example above you draw a circle on the screen) then the menu will pop up allowing you to cut/copy this text. If you simply tap the screen, or begin to scroll again then the text is de-selected and you carry on as normal. Likewise to paste you tap to place the cursor into the field you want to past into and draw a circle. This brings up the menu again allowing you to paste your clipboard to where the cursor is.

Implimenting this into all past/present Apps would not be an issue since the OS itself handles it all. All they would have to do is write the gesture into the OS. Gestures such as scroll are already universal.
