Gizmodo: negative review of Lion... thoughts?

Regardless of all the naysayers who try to rewrite history, facts are facts and blackhand1001 is pretty much accurate. Problems with Vista were hugely exaggerated and blown out of proportion by the press. Public opinion did the rest. I have used Vista extensively and intensely, and I have (on my computer) never seen or had a BSOD since I upgraded my XP with Beta 3 (followed by the the RC's and SP's as they cam available) of Vista. None. But in my Windows days I built my own computer and I made very sure to get proper hardware with which I was pretty much guarantied good driver support.

Of the problems I have seen others have with Vista, 100% was caused by 3rd party drivers, either by them lacking or them being completely crap. None of which was Microsofts fault, or a Vista problem.

I'm still more productive with OSX though and my now 2yo MBP feels as fast as it did when I got it. I went through hardware a lot quicker back then. :)

Gizmodo is the worst.. this found image from the 'net sums them up.

Absolute bull. There is no valid correlation between the crap that was Vista and the slightly modified version of Snow Leopard known as Lion. It's not a huge upgrade (and the price reflects that), but it's not universally hated nor is it a disaster by any means.

No offence mate, but can you please explain what's a 'huge upgrade'?

Why do people believe that UI changes or overall look of the operating system define the extent of changes and work done on the system?

I think Lion is the best upgrade since Tiger with such great features like - Resume, Versions, Autosave, Full screen apps. Any one who is a developer would feel blessed by God for having full-screen APIs and resume now supported by the OS.

I think Lion is one of the best releases of the Macintosh Operating System, Apple's ever shipped(or will ship - incase of Lion). On another note, I have never come across a stable GM build of a macintosh release - Leopard had more bugs than OS 360; Snow Leopard had a lot of stability issues. Lion is very stable and efficient with just a handful of quirks. Some are new in the GM; some have been there since DP1.

No offense - just a question and some thoughts on Lion.

I have to agree with this. Vista wasn't the highly anticipated upgrade to XP that MS users deserved, but it wasnt nearly as bad as people say. The biggest issues was when it was thrown on hardware that couldnt handle it (which did happen way too often and forced us to downgrade to XP), but on powerful hardware it handled just fine.

I think its a shame that Gizmodo made that Vista comparison to Lion because the article was well written with many good points. Unfortunately theres a large portion of the Mac community that have knee-jerk reactions to anything Microsoft and they've focused on such a minor sentence while ignoring everything else worth discussing.

Ok, since you having been using it and I haven't been able to find out the answers anywhere else. Can you turn off versioning in the apps that uses it? Or will that just be on an app by app basis? What about autosave? Ther are times when i deliberately don't want to save documents or when I am working with giant files and don't want them versioned. How are full screen apps different than what some apps do now? I am thinking here of Lightroom and Photoshop in particular, both of which can be run in full screen. As far as I can tell they do it by modifying the plist that says whether or not to display the dock and menu bar when an app is active. This can be done for any app currently. I am wondering if there is something new about the full screen apps that is different form this? Much of Lion excites me, but I have been wondering about those two things.

Regardless of this article, I quit reading Gizmodo THE DAY they changed the design. Too glitchy, and I can't preview the article with the picture that quickly. Now, it doesn't work in Japan any more, because there is a specific Japanese website. Pretty much SUCKS. Oh, btw, I heard that the guy who wrote this article was the one who got the prototype of iPhone 4? Too obvious he doesn't like Apple anymore.

The only way really to give Lion a negative review would be if it broke something or left out features that SL had. Even if its only a minor improvement its still a great OS.

Simply put:

Gizmodo stinks.

So you didn't bother to read the article? I love how people will just dismiss the article without bothering to comment on the details of the article. For one, the author isn't slamming Lion but making valid points about issues they had with it.

Consumer Reports gave the iPhone a "thumbs down" as well... and we all know how that affected iPhone sales. :)

Gizzy has so much tarnish on themselves that even *if* they would stumble onto something credible nobody would believe it.

It brokes Spaces and having the lid open with the macbook monitor off.

Oh snap... I just fail'd... >.>

My apologies.

But Gizmodo DOES stink. :p

No, Vista was pretty much awful.

Stuff like this (and below the original post) is hilarious. It just proves my point. Vista is quite similar to Windows 7, and yet 7 is the biggest and best version of Windows yet. So Vista sucked but 7 is amazing? Yeah ok, haha.

Once again people just proving that the ads were successful, and more important than reality.

Vista had a pretty rocky start, mostly because of the new driver model (and third party vendors playing catchup) and somewhat poorly optimised. It got a bad reputation at launch and it just seemed to stick. It was actually a pretty solid OS after the first SP.

There were some other issues, like the certification on machines that were under powered, but every new OS has some glitches. The media took a story and ran with it. Vista was fine. Windows 7 just isn't that different and it's lauded.

You haven't proven any point. Windows 7 is a finished version of Vista. Microsoft admitted the problems. They have been well documented.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Criticism_of_Windows_Vista

IT departments hated Vista because of the driver and other compatibility problems. It wasn't ads that were the problem for Vista, it was a complete PR failure based on the quality of the product. Microsoft was forced to provide downgrade licensing! That doesn't come from simple advertising problems.

I used Vista. It was fine after SP2. I dealt with the quirks because I like to try new stuff. I was the guinea pig. IT decided against upgrading anyone else. Windows 7 is head and shoulders above Vista in finish and quality.

Lion's performance is pretty bad, its quite the memory hog.

I am sorry but I am tired of seeing this non sense.

A WELL OPTIMIZED OS USES ALL AVAILABLE RAM.

There I said it. When I buy RAM I want the OS to use it dammit.
I guess my solaris server is really badly coded : it is using 15 gigabits of RAM when idling.

An OS is badly coded when it cannot allocate memory efficiently, when it cannot reclaim quickly RAM etc... not when it uses a lot of RAM

What i am surpised by is the UI inconsistency with these core apps.

They made iCal look like a leather diary, like on iPad, and the same with Address Book.

Yet on both iPad and Lion, Mail looks like a real app.

How come that aint a big desk with envelopes, and when you write an email you write a letter, which gets put into an envelope when you send and flies off into a postbox?

I dont mind iCal as much as I hate Address Book like.

Strange how on the desktop they are iCal and Address Book but on iOS their counterparts are Calendar and Contacts.

Maybe by 10.8 they will align everything properly.

Seriously, dude. What if Apple read this stuff? Mail.app may do just what you describe in 10.7.1. Aaaarrrgggghhh

The fact that the author only had a handful of valid arguments, made it clear that it was all through pure hate. C'mon if the biggest tech company hates your Tech Blog, then what are you going to do?

I agree Lion might not be the upgrade i hoped it would be, but it's still amazing I can see myself using it professionally and for fun.

I don't need to read Mossberg's fanboy review or Gizmodo's hate-fest to make up my own mind. And if I could easily go back to Snow Leopard, I would. The upside is I only paid 29 bucks for this crap.

Im glad somebody stood up and told the truth. Lion is good, but it's not ready. Everything is half ass and their decision to be more "iOS" is not a good solution. Granted, its early and there will be fixes but they are trying to ride the iOS horse and sometimes you just have to say NO.

No Steve. No!!. (slaps hand). Bad boy!

I used to be a heavy Gizmodo reader (three years and starred) and now I haven't gone there in close to a year. Jesus Diaz is the most arrogant, egotistical writer on their payroll and I couldn't care less what he has to say about anything. He has cursed out and banned users just for disagreeing with him. He's usually Apple's chief resident fanboy. Ever since the iPhone 4 leak Giz has dropped in quality tremendously.

Everybody is entitled to there own opinion I don't know why people are giving so many thumbs down. There are some people disappointed with Lion others impressed. I'm probably in-between, I like OS X Lion, but I could also live without it. I don't know if there is anything that compelling about Lion, but I do think the new interface is great, Launchpad particularly for me is what I really love about Lion..

Overall I think they did a great job for an OS that is costing you $29.99..

As far as Gizmodo goes, I mean they have the right to say whatever they feel.. I think its extremely difficult to make an Operating System that caters to everyones needs.. So you can't expect everyone to be happy..

Correct me if I'm wrong but the Gizmodo editor said it wasn't easy to switch easy between apps while in full screen mode... Can't you just use the 4 finger swipe to the left/right? That switches between apps easily.
