They're not previewing but speculating and they've been a been negative towards anything apple since they got their hands slapped because of the iPhone 4 debacle.

Probably the worst article that I have read this year. Speculation aside, it seems to be written by a narrow mind.

Ethernet is legacy? Parallel is legacy, USB 1.0 is legacy. Firewire, Ethernet, are not. I would love to see Gizmodo's Ethernet-free network. Completely Ethernet free.

As for the hard drive debate, people seem to think that Apple don't give us an SSD option for the MBP. Just because it doesn't come as standard doesn't mean it isn't an option. I sure as hell would like to see a professional musician work with 256GB of storage...

It's pretty typical for Gizmodo these days. Nothing new.

Why does everyone think they are going to remove HDDs? Really? Are you insane? I sure can't operate on 256GB or even 512. I need at least a 750 + SSD.
Are you insane? You think Apple makes products just for you?

Some people clearly do not understand the concepts of compromise and optimisation.
Most people do not.

I believe it is a result of people's need to feel accepted and conforming.
IMO it's just ignorance. There's no such thing as something that's all benefit. You can't max one aspect of anything without impacting other aspects. Few people actually create things and have such an understanding. The masses think you can just keep adding things without introducing drawbacks and and other issues.

I don't think I would want to carry an external everywhere I go.

I'm more wondering what kind of work would require that much space. Not to mention (and someone has already said this) that Apple doesn't just make computers for him. I have a 250gb SSD in my MBP and I'm fine. I use my laptop mostly for law school, but it's also my main media center. Videos, music and everything go to my laptop, and I still have plenty of space. Of course, someone that uses theirs for media editing may want some more space, but it's hard to imagine that someone in that field could not benefit GREATLY from the advantages of an SSD.

I currently have a 320GB laptop and it's full, therefore ideally I'd like to upgrade to 512GB. Whilst I have external drives I use those as a back up rather than using them day to day. I like to carry and use as little peripherals as possible, therefore when I buy my new MBP I'll be putting in a 512GB SSD. Surely though people buy a SSD for the speed, if you then store and use the data on an external HDD then this is going to slow it right down again. Each to their own and all that though :)

I'm also in law and I have a lot of law books saved as PDFs along with my papers. I don't use much for media since the only thing on my computer is music. Video, I stream. I also partitioned my hard drive for gaming in Windows 7 and those games tend to run large. While I would like an SSD, I just like to have peace of mind that I have a lot of space in my 750GB for whatever happens in the future.

Also, large SSDs are expensive now but I can see prices dropping this year.

With thunderbolt peripherals and USB 3.0 on the horizon, that bottleneck is going to be gone pretty soon. I'm not really sure what you've done to fill your laptop memory up, but even that isn't the same as saying you need at least 750gb plus an SSD.

First question is where did you get law books in PDF. I need that in my life now. Secondly, I guess I understand the idea of peace of mind. But, yeah SSD's are dropping in price and I think more affordable high capacity ones will be coming pretty soon.

I feel like everyone is insane! Its a PRO computer...
Why is it a PRO computer? Because it's in the name? :)

What if Apple redesigns all the MBP's/Airs and simply merges the entire line by calling them all MacBooks... dropping the PRO marketing hype altogether?

Because it's capable of pulling it's weight against a desktop. Present MBPs can be compared to a quad core Mac Pro in CPU, and even stretch to GPU. A MBA cannot.

Problems I see:

The new MBPs will be useless to me if they're only ssd. not near enough storage.

Killer Graphics. There's no way they'll incorporate those kind of graphics with a larger battery and thinner profile. i don't see how it will be able to handle the heat.

New battery tech: unlikely. haven't heard of any new tangible innovations in battery tech for a long time

Full surface trackpad. ridiculous. even if it could differentiate between a palm and a finger, you would always have to be super careful with your hands. There's absolutely no way

no Ethernet? how will I be able to bring my laptop into work and work on extra large files on our NAS? or change prefs in our switch? this is a necessity, why even call it a pro if it doesn't have pro things.

Even the 13" MacBook Pro? I had no idea what a powerhouse I was using.

Strange how even this lowly model shares the pro moniker yet defies your definition of what a pro machine is. You just proved to yourself that the word "pro" means nothing to Apple. :) It actually means so little that one day there will be no such thing. Perhaps sooner than we all think.

that was the dumbest article I ever read

in a few weeks you'll see how dumb it was

and MBP is practically meaningless in the big picture - it sends no message.

Yeah, generally I try and forget about the 13" MBP. Apple should just call it the MacBook and be done with it. However, even the base 13" MBP is still 40% faster than the top MBA.

Since there's no 15" or 17" MBA currently in the market, I will have to use the MBA 13" for this comparison...

In ALL the MBP 13" vs. MBA 13" (2011 models) benchmark reviews I've read online, the gap in terms of performance is less than 10%... Closer to a mere 5% in most of the cases... So clearly there's hardly anything a MBP 13" can do that a MBA 13" can't.

Seriously man, the "Pro" tag in MBPs is just a marketing term. It's been many years that Apple products target consumers rather than PROfessionals.

I got a scholarship from the school and they said I have to use it on school related expenses but I already had a book scholarship from an outside source. So I invested in a high quality scanner. Scan books, convert to PDF. Great way to carry on the go. Even my professors sometimes ask me for copies so he can give them out in class instead of having people to bring the bricks to class.

Anyway, I'm looking to buy an SSD soon but I'm just wondering how to get my huge windows game files saved somewhere instead of having to redownload them.

I can get by with 256gb SSD as I use DropBox.

BUT I want my optical drive in my 15" MBPro:mad:

I would be fine if the airs and mbps became one. As long as they come with 3 USB 3.0 ports and are able to expand the ram to 16GB.

Same thing here too. I wouldn't have a problem with Apple getting rid of MBP and MBA and simply making one single family of hybrid Macbooks (slightly thinner than MBPs and slightly beefier than MBAs).

If we look at the MBP 13" vs. MBA 13", there's not really that much of a difference in terms of performance so why shouldn't they be marketed as one single machine? At the end of the day, Apple is a consumer-orientated brand (don't let the "pro" tag fool you), so a hybrid model would be more than enough for 95% of their customer-base.
