Why call the iPad the iPad1?
Apple built two models - iPad and iPad2.

Why call it an upgrade from iPad to iPad2?
No one is upgrading. You are acquiring a new model.

Semantics. They are both iPads. Denoting the first one as an iPad 1 just offers clarity when discussing two devices.

Is it really that expensive ?

If one sells the iPad-1 and upgrade to iPad-2, I guestimate losing at most few hundred dollars.

For me, that'd be cheap to pay for 1 year of usage on the iPad-1 and enjoying all of its benefits instead of sitting and waiting on the sideline.

I'm sure there are a large number of people that do not want to sell their iPad 1. I have an iPad 2. If I decide I want the iPad 3, I'll most likely keep the iPad 2. In my house the iPad is always being used between me, my wife, and my kids. It would be nice to have two. I'd say $500 is fairly expensive.

Why is it so much better?

I've noticed a few things on the apps that have just come out. Those that run Real Racing 2 on their iPad 1's complain about performance, as the graphics at times seem to be a bit too much for the iPad 1. The game Gears has a lower rez option for the iPad 1 and a higher one for iPad 2.

As more apps come out to take advantage of the new processor and memory, you'll start to see the true difference and flexibility between the two devices.

I suppose if you only surf the net, look at pics, listen to music, and lightly play games, then you are right, the update was not worthwhile.

The iPad2 is a significant upgrade. It's easy to underestimate the improvements; however, keep in mind that the percentage speed increase is the largest generational increase in the history of iOS.
It's even larger then the jump in specs that the iPhone experienced from the 3G to the 3GS.

Heh, I never understand these threads. Almost seems like someone trying to justify to *themselves* why they don't need the new toy.

iPad 2 is superior to iPad 1 in every single way. I have both, I use both, and the iPad 2 is much better in every possible way. It feels better, it runs faster, and there are some apps (games in particular) that are starting to take advantage of the increased hardware power already (see: Real Racing 2 HD)...

I'll be going for iPad 3 as well. :D

EDIT: My only lament (thus far) is no jailbreak for iPad 2. But it's coming...

As some have quoted you saying it is not superior in every I agree with them.

I am commenting more on the justification by the OP. It seems as though he is just trying to convince himself not to go out and buy the iPad 2. +1

Not at all. Iv'e had all the iPhones. I've used a friends iPad2. Just decided for the money involved in upgrading, even though I own my own business and can claim the tax back, I don't find it sufficiently worthwhile. As I've said, if the next one is a decent upgrade, I'll be back on the Apple merry go round.
Funny how some feel your'e not allowed skip a generation of Apple products at all

I use a late '06 Macbook, iPad is first gen. I feel apple product last many generations.

You started your post by saying "Not at all." Then farther down you did more justification on why you didn't upgrade. I agree for many the iPad 1st generation is more than sufficient. My dad uses the iPad far more than I do, mainly to read and look up home improvement products (he is a former contractor). I have no problem stating that I wanted the iPad 2 but could not justify the couple hundred to upgrade for my uses.

If I had owned an iPad 1 I doubt I would have upgraded. I was somewhat unimpressed with the iPad specs that I decided to wait since the iPad only apps were limited when the iPad was first introduced.
