-seems like innovation is in the back seat, all these cell phones are about the same price & performance and they should be because the phone market is saturated.

-confess you know a lot of people who dont use the technology beyond text voice...

the bad is now:
-there are two surfaces to shatter, will create a costly repair
-more than ever you must consider a case
-the new case design is such that it must not slow down the rate of battery charge so you might not be able to have additional features a case could bring like additional battery, credit card storage

Cases that support Qi charging have been around for years.

Being Apple they are late to the party and accessories will be overpriced.

True. But what you think of now when you hear the term "smartphone" was invented by Apple. A (relatively) large multitouch screen with no physical keyboard. Multi touch actions like pinch-to-zoom. An App Store. Then, after that, a high-resolution screen. An "assistant" you can speak to. The best point-and-shoot camera you can own. A device which reads your fingerprint. Etc.

I used to think all that, now when I hear Apple I just think a bit more negative. How a company can do things to make you think differently.

Six and 22 foot drops on to concrete?! Why don't they do tests of what might actually happen in real usage? As in 2-4 foot drops onto tables, tile or wood floors of various softnesses, gravel paths, etc.. Concrete can and does happen, but it's far from the most common case, and certainly not from the extreme heights they are using. Even asphalt provides a much softer landing.

Talk about bias or what! That is like Tim Cook advising people to buy Apple stock.

I have never broken a screen on any of my phones in the 20 years of having a mobile.

My phone recently fell out of my pocket at the top my my stairs at home.

It went all the way to the ground floor and nothing broke.

I am talking about cases that support Qi charging.

Got a third party case that supports wireless charging for $11 on Amazon. Not overpriced. Apple's own cases are always overpriced, but they just took their 7 cases and labelled them for 8, and didn't hike up the price any. Overpriced before, and overpriced now. Nothing to do with the wireless charging.

Any case is fine as long as it's not super-thick like an otterbox.

Yeah and that doesn't even consider third party repairs. AppleCare is something every single person needs to consider carefully, for some products and use cases, it isn't worth the cost of admission.

It was worth it when it was only 69 € instead of 150 € with the iPhone 8/8 Plus.
Those were the good old days with regular Apple care. I guess people exchanged their phones too often for little scratches and such that Apple had to change their policy and pricing.

Aren't Apple accessories always more expensive than the competition?

Expensive in an absolute sense? Arguably.

But they also sometimes cost more while also providing more value, so it all kinda squares out in the end.

Anyways, my reply was in response to the poster arguing that Apple-branded wireless chargers cost more than the competition. Which I going to be an odd condemnation given that Apple didn’t come up with their own proprietary version of wireless charging, so you are free to use any brand you wish rather than be forced to pay the “Apple tax”.

Still doesn't detract from the truth that Apple wireless chargers will likely cost more than those from other manufacturers.

Apple-branded accessories have always cost more. That was never the question.

The only wireless charger I know of is which Apple is making is that airpower charger due next year, and that is supposedly Apple’s own custom take with their own software baked in, designed to charge both the Airpods and Apple Watch as well.

If it costs more, but also does more (or does something which no other third party offering can), then it’s not so clear cut anymore, isn’t it?

That was the thread that I was replying to.

Apple are following the QI standard. There are others out there with multiple coil chargers. Airpower is just marketing like "Bionic" chip. I remember Apple used to market based on what something could do and not what was powering it.

As it happens all QI chargers have software baked in. Both sides have a handshake protocol that must be established before one side will energise the coil and the other receive that energy.

Correct. If they provide more than the QI standard.
