i have a mbp 15" with a matte display and i definitely like it. i have never had too much experience with glossy displays but i havent had any problem when i have used them

You should be very wary of the results you're gonna get in this thread because the title of your post introduces a HUGE selection bias. You're title sounds like it is talking only to people who chose to buy a glossy screen and then what do they think of it. So you're almost only going to attract people who like the glossy screen or don't care either way. So you're virtually eliminating everyone who didn't choose to get a glossy screen.

I thought that is exactly what the guy was asking about; opinions of people who own glossy screens. Can you even get a matte screen from an Apple laptop anymore?

The arguments I have heard for matte are all based on color, and in almost every case, people are not doing color sensitive work on their laptop. It's not like the glossy MBP's colors are all wacky, but yeah, you might not want to use it to fine tune the color photo on that $100,000 ad campaign you are working on. For most every other use, it's fine, actually, better than fine. It's a laptop first and foremost and for a laptop screen, and for what 99%+ of humans use a laptop for, it totally kicks ass.

Apple stores are lit up like an angel is appearing from heaven, so if you can see the screen in there with no problems, buy it. What you gain in refracted light from a matte screen costs you in brightness, sharpness, and color saturation.

I am not certain the thread topic invites a certain bias to this thread.

It asks an interesting question for which I think everyone who knows
matte vs. laptop understands and begs for a pro or con answer.

I know you guys are talking mainly about notebooks, but I'm using an older white iMac 20' (2.16GHz) at home with a matte screen but have a last gen aluminum iMac 20' with a glass glossy screen at work. While I do notice the difference sometimes with more reflections at work, it's only when I'm looking at dark things on the screen. Most of the stuff I do at work (word processing etc) is fine as it's mostly white on the screen which I don't notice the reflections.

It's different with a desktop I know as the angle is usually closer to vertical so you tend not to get reflections of the roof.

Thoughts it was worth posting my opinions anyway.

I don't know about a bias, but I don't like how it's worded. "Did you get used to it, or does it drive you mad?" implies that there was something to get used to, or perhaps something that was bad at first, but you grew to like it. My iMac has the matte screen, and I notice no difference between using it and my MacBook Pro. Would've been a lot better had it been "Do you like the glass screen, or do you dislike it?".

I also don't understand what the hell you're trying to say in that second part of your post. Makes absolutely no sense.

In one of the labs at school we have iMacs of both the Matte and the Glassy varieties. While I tried to get used to the glassy screen since the computers are faster, I just couldn't stand them and they drove me into eye strain several times. Went back to using the matte screens and had no problem. I will never buy a glassy screen.

... Ever think that maybe some people outside the advertising/photography/publishing demographic (which is becoming a smaller and smaller slice of Apple's pie) would appreciate the glossy screens for better looking games and watching movies?

Don't forget the music professionals! It is really great to see all lights on stage reflected in your glossy screen. Oh no, wait a minute, maybe it would be more helpful if you could actually see the Logic windows too

Massive reflections are something that need to be adjusted to or learned to be ignored, not something to be embraced. A screen that acts as a mirror is of course bad, but something that you may get accustomed to (maybe you learn to position it better, adjust brightness, learn to ignore the reflections, etc...). And as the poll is trying to determine, is the shiny mirror-like display something that is not as bad as it seems that you get used to quickly, or is it something that gnaws away at you and gives you buyers remorse.

I got eye strain and headache. The same thing happened to me in 2007 when I purchased the Santa Rosa MacBook. But got used to it after a while.

It's kind of funny how asymmetric the conflict is (Matte vs Glossy).

On one side you have matte folks (including myself):
"Glare (glossy) screens are *****e, give us an OPTION for matte"

On the other side, glossy folks:
"Shut up matte idiots, just get glossy like the rest of us; no one is buying glossy anyway; who cares if Apple removed this option? All 3 people who bought it?"

That's usually the argument...

You really think it will be osbolete? What are you using it for?

For me I could probably use it for at least 5 years (as long as it didn't break). So it wouldn't be obsolete in terms of usefulness, just in terms of technology and value. What I mean by obsolete is that in 2 years, the bottom of the line macbook will be far faster than the top of the line BTO 17" macbook pro today. If you buy a 13" MBP for $1300 and in 2 years it is outdated, then it isn't really such a big deal, but if you buy a 17" MBP for $3000+ and it is outdated in 2 years then it's a lot bigger of a hit (can't really upgrade).

It's really interesting how the ratio of votes (relative percentages for each answer) have been about the same since the beggining at around 30 votes.

I think the last category for people who would not even considering glassy and won't buy until a matte option is available makes things a bit difficult. Mainly because they have never owned or used a glassy screen and can't say that they would get used to it or not. Also these may be professionals who may like a glassy for everday use, but cannot have one because they need the matte for their work.

I've used glossy on many occasions. I never "get used to it". I am not a graphic designer, nor am I a person who cares about color accuracy, nor am I in any other group that glossy-only proponents try to claim all matte lovers belong to. I am just a regular user, I almost entirely use my computer for web surfing, word processing, email, and watching streaming videos. I am not a niche graphics user, I am a regular computer user, and I hate glossy. No matter how many times I've used it, I never "get used to it". I really didn't like it at all when I first used a glossy screen, and now that I've used a glossy screen on many different occasions I still really dislike it.

Not in the case of my vote, and probably many others. I have used them for extended periods and would never personally buy one.

Yes you guys are right, there are lots of people in the last category who have used glassy and who just hate it and will not buy it. I'm sure there are also some pro's in there.

Great turnout on this poll everyone, thanks for participating!

The matte screens from apple are not coming back for the run of the mill models. Get used to doing a techrestore type of process for every mainstream apple laptop. Too many people like the glass. At this point, if Apple just made it back to regular glossy, I'd consider it a win.

Plus I'm guessing people who bought them already liked the screens to begin with so of course there are going to be more "I already love the glossy" or the "I don't' like it but I will convince myself it's alright cause I'm stuck with it" votes. :D

You know I kid, go love your glossy.
