When doing all that "PRO" photo and video work, you shouldn't be doing it on a 15 inch laptop anyways, regardless of whether it's matte or glossy. I know my colleagues have connected their mbps to a matte 30-inch LG or NEC S-IPS display and worked from there... Matte or glossy, you're not going to get the color accuracy that you listed with a TN panel.

Yeah, you might argue that you sometimes might need to work on the fly, but then even if you DID have a matte 15- or 17-inch mbp, you'll end up with half the job that can be accomplished on a 24+ inch S-IPS monitor.

Just like my thoughts!

Just tell yourself that its a matte screen behind a piece of glossy protective glass. You will feel much better.

****Insert Justin Timberlake Cry me a river*********

For all you NON Photographers and Video editors ou there let me clarify why we hatte glossy:

- The contrast is higher than it really is: you are not seeing the image as it really is.
- When we are on location there is more reflection, I dont want to build a tent around my computer.
- Unable to calibrate for "less contrast" we wont really know how our prints will look in the end... it becomes a guessing game.

Sam,

I calibrated and measured both and posted the results a while back. You can look it up if interested. Glossy came out ever so slightly more accurate than matte when calibrated to 6500K at gamma of 2.2. The contrast being too high argument is a bunch of bologna. The only argument photographers might have is that the matte looks more like the contrast of paper print. But then I would argue that anyone doing critical color correction on these low quality notebook screens is using the wrong equipment.

About a year ago, I bought a MB, and LOVED it, EXCEPT for the glossy screen, which caused me much eye straing and frustration (having to always reorient it) and I ultimatly got bells palsy.
Don't think that this caused your Bell's Palsy.

Bell's Palsy has nothing to do with your glossy screen. Sorry.
Having said the above, they still to this day do not know what causes Bell's Palsy.

From Wikipedia said:
Bell's palsy is a paralysis of the facial nerve resulting in inability to control facial muscles on the affected side. Several conditions can cause a facial paralysis, e.g., brain tumor, stroke, and Lyme disease. However, if no specific cause can be identified, the condition is known as Bell's Palsy.
Pretty vague if you ask me.

BTW, I've had BP so I know a little bit about it.

There should be a matte option, period. In fact it should be the default.
Agree!

I would recommend that everyone who wants the Matte option, let Apple know, politely of course, via e-mail and feedback on the website. It will be an uphill battle because SJ believes that since sales are up, glossy must be good. So please send feedback to Apple if you want to see a Matte screen option. And if you haven't sent feedback, then don't complain about it.

Speak Apple's Language

If you don't like the glossy screen, don't buy the new MB/MBP. That is the only way Apple might listen - if their bottom line is affected.

I hate glossy so I bought the old MBP

matte glass?

Anti-reflective coatings are very common on glass - MgF2 being a common one.

My issue is the horrible reflection - the new version MBP glossy screens are more reflective than the older version glossy.

The worlds most sophisticated glass lenses are all multi coated - many techniques.

If you don't like the glossy, but the old mbp and you'll save money. Seems like apple is going to head towards the glass direction.

I did that and then found out they are afflicted with the known 8600 failure problem.

So our options have been limited by Apple.

Am I the only one who is getting really sick of some of the people who prefer glossy acting like we're all whiners and should buy the old model or a pc?

Maybe some people don't mind or don't notice everything reflecting, but I do and it drives me insane.

I am however really hoping someone on here gets one of those matte coatings and posts some pictures and a review so I know how well they work. After being absolutely furious about the glossy only screen, I was somewhat relieved to know that anti-glare coatings exist.

i hate glossy until i saw it in person.
WAY BETTER THAN WHAT I EXPECTED
disappointed, but still purchasing...

No, you're not the only one getting sick of all the hostility being shown by those who got their preferred option to those who don't want it. Imagine if it were the other way around, and matte was the only default. period. I guess all the folks irritated by us fans of matte would be whining like babies.

To all you folks happy with the glossy screen, could you just go enjoy your computers and quit being such dinks to those of us who prefer something else? Please. I don't care what you use, or like - that's your business. If reading these threads irritates you, don't friggin' read them. The rest of us don't care if they irritate you, especially since you have a choice to read or not to read. At least you have a choice, right? Those of us who want matte screens don't have a choice.

And for the theory that because glossy outsells matte Apple decided matte wasn't worth it, then why doesn't Apple just sell Windows computers? I hear they outsell Mac by a considerable percentage... but that wouldn't be Apple-like, now would it?

I also greatly prefer the glossy screen. I am extremely pleased with it over a the previous matte ones I owned before. The contrast is spectacular comparatively and I can look at the screen for long periods of time and not get a headache like I used to with the matte screens. Everyone has their preferences and I feel bad for anyone who doesn't have an option for what they would like but I am quite pleased with the gloss and personally will never buy another non-glossy screen again.

.
No, your not. There are a great many people whose only purpose on these boards is to attempt to make people feel like crap for simply having their own preferances. Calling an expression of an opinion a waste of time is about as stupid as wasting the time to state that expressing an opinion is a waste of time. Seriously, people, if opinions and likes/dislikes get your panties in a bunch that much DONT READ THE THREAD. Duh. Why feel the need to be an asshat?!?

If anyone has actually applied a matte film to their new MBP screen, I hope they will report back here about it with some photos.

As for the future of matte: I'm going to hope that Apple will work as hard on the screen glass as they did on the trackpad glass. They say they worked for many months to get just the right texture on the etched glass. So can't they do some etching or mottling or something to the screen glass? So it could still be glass, just not the narcissistic variety. Shouldn't that be possible?

Fact. Also, I've been using glossy screens for 5 years now and I haven't even found myself regretting it or even thinking about it.

People will seriously whine about anything.

Agreed. Technology being what it is, the notion of a matte glass shouldn't be that difficult to achieve. I don't know if it's about anti-reflective coatings, crystal alignment or what (think of polarizing glass, various photographic anti-glare/anti-reflective formulas) but it should be possible to make a glass screen that isn't as shiny and reflective as a mirror. On my older big screen HDTV it's a matte type glass screen, but it came with a snap-on protective shield that is horrendously glossy. Lamps, or any light in the room reflects directly, depending on what angle you're viewing the screen at, and it's always a pain in the a$$, and turning all the lights out hurts the eyes. I finally just got rid of the protective glossy shield.

Good for you! And your point is? You got what you want, so you're cool? Might as well go over and harass those who aren't happy? Cheers, bro. You da man!

Eh. My real point is that it's nothing to start entire PETITIONS over, or 10 different threads on the same message board.

I'm not a huge Apple fan (the new MBP is the first I have myself owned) but I think it's a testament to their build quality/feature set that people are whining about glossy vs. matte. It's more annoying that once most of these people (inevitably) buy a new mbp or mb, they'll realize that the brightness on it (and most glossy screens) is brilliant enough to overcome any semblance of reflection...short of sitting in the full sun, which makes you a douche.

Also, thanks! You're the man too! <3

Well, thank you for not calling me a whiner... maybe we can talk...:)

Sure, I have no doubt lots of folks who think they'd never be able to accept a glossy screen will overcome it when in the company of a well-made product. But, initially it's to be expected that folks who know what they do like don't like being dictated to, and given no option, especially when it's technically possible. Notice all the unhappiness (some (you, for instance) call it whining...) over the dropping of FW on the MB. Some folks have their reasons for why they want what they want, and don't like being forced to bend over because they're in the minority. That basically describes most of us long-time Mac users for the entire history of Mac vs. Windows. Apple has been the company that listened to us, while the rest of the world ignored Mac users. Now, Apple is doing the same thing to long-time supporters in favor of the consumer trends. That's the beef. Some of us don't like what it suggests, and we'd like to be heard.

Naturally, at first there's going to be a bit of chaos, multiple threads, petitions, etc. Get over it. How many dumb threads about rumors (well, this is MacRumors.com...) have we seen, about stuff nobody even knows. It's all talk. It's all noise, and it get's particularly noisy just before and after new product introductions, so just let it go. Why let it bother you? If you're happy, I'm happy for you. Some of us aren't. Simple as that.

Listen glossy lovers.

Listen up glossy lovers, who decide this could be their first mac for photos, youtube whatever else you want to use it for great. For us professionals who have been using macs before they were the cool thing to take to starbucks we were buying macs 3 years ago that only came with MATTE SCREENS! imaging that glossy lovers, no glossy screens. It wasn't that long ago that matte was the standard and that glossy was not even a BTO option. We that have been using these screens forever have been screwed by apple because the consumers love glossy screens. Do i really care what consumers like to watch their itunes movies on.....No. what I care about is being able to get a machine that I can work on and not be seeing what is behind me. I own a design studio with 5 of us and everyone uses matte MBP's and cinema displays....what the %$#@ do we do now. For those of devoted apple users who need these machines to make a a living on, I feel we have been screwed so apple could sell more computers for people to watch their lame itunes content on. If you dont use these machines for work/design/video whatever, you wont get it...so go buy the glossy screens and dont comment on how they look shinier and more contrasty....

Exactly! I couldn't have said it better. If you love your glossy screen, then go play with it and shut up! Quit jumping on our case. Some of us are pissed... and it ain't your business. It's between us and Apple.
