Well here's another real image from anandtech. Not as dramatic as some would like to believe. The AG screen is amazing to use in RL.

both can look like **** if you get the right photograph...

That's very interesting. Based strictly on the photos, both types of screens (anti-glare & glossy) look "exactly" the same to me...

A tale of two screens...

If those two photos were from the same angle for both screens I would agree with the comparison.

I.e. if one were to put the AG screen where the glossy is in the first photo we would have a better comparison.

As stated up in an earlier post - one could take a photo of both screens under varying circumstances and make them look like total a##.

The ones shown by Anandtech over a much more fair comparison.

No kidding? Let me go over there and ask my aisle mate to move his macbook around. I am not claiming that this is a scientific controlled experiment, but as a real life experience he has been bitching and repositioning his screen for the past 3 hours, while I have been working next to the window with my AG. I understand his pain, my old 2008 15" MBP was glossy and I have been that guy on the train. This just reminds me why I got the AG.

YMMV

Calm down turbo - you posted a photo that "compared" the screens. Scientific or no you are putting information - comparing - to make a statement. You do not state anything in your previous post other than the photos. Nothing about said aisle mate complaining or anything. I am attempting to caution people to take those photos for what they are - not a good comparison for this highly charged thread LOL.

And if you read up, you will see my post on what I mean.

Agree - every picture tells a different tale. However, I didn't want dayinlife to pass off a doctored photo as legit.

I'm a glossy guy but harbor no animosity towards the AG crowd. I would probably be an AG fan myself except I hate the silver bezel.

I'm all for AG but I agree on the silver bezel!

Why can't it be black like the glossy version? It's much more elegant with the black lining!

glossy is for the unexperienced average user. shiny, saturated colors, and a personal mirror. Wow!

AG is where it at mothacrackers.

Don't worry about me Micro, I'm plenty calm. Try scrolling up and reading my previous post for some more context.

To be honest, the gloss never bothers me--in fact, I just really appreciated it when I wanted to put a pair of earrings in and didn't feel like walking to the mirror...

The only reason the black bezel looks good is because it is covered in glass with makes it shiny black. Without the glass it would be a dull plastic black bezel and would look super tacky.

They'll never make it. Such a pity. I wonder why Apple's so stubborn on the 13" being glossy only?

For a 13", I wouldn't want it on anti-glare because of the lower resolution. I think anti-glare looks better with a bigger screen and higher resolution. The glossy should be sufficient for a 13". I don't think anti-glare would look nice on a 13".

When the i5's & i7's were released I did a side by side calibration using the monitor preference pane. With the horrible Apple Store lighting, I couldn't get the anti-glare 17" even close.

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't it still a crap shoot as to which brand panel is used? There used to be several different brands, some much better than others.

(I also went through several TV returns a while back. Glossy televisions have a sharper picture.)

dayinalife - your sinister conspiracy must be stamped out :)

Just kidding of course. It wasn't until someone seemed to make their decision based on the photo that I felt obliged to chime in.

No worries!

In hindsight I should have mentioned "under the right conditions" meant being doctored with Canon photo editing software. :)

Thanks!

I personally hate glossy in terms of usability. It is just irritating to use a computer screen in bright areas. But I do like the color quality on the screen. It is just amazing.

For that reason, I opted for AG MacBook Pro 15. and bought the iPad 2 for glossy preferences, mostly for HD movie watching and some other image / video stuff.

Thats just me BTW.

I like both screens, their benefits show in different conditions, neither are perfect.

The last photo in Neil1138's post shows a good example of what I don't like in the AG screens and that is the 'sheen' or reflective glow you see on the screen when there's bright light above or behind you....

It's a trade off of seeing that sheen or a mirror image of what's behind you.

The AG font's always seem 'fuzzier' to me, that's attributed to that 'milky coating' or 'stretched panty hose' effect on the screen from the AG film.

The MacBook Air screen is best in my experience, I'm not saying as far as color accuracy but as far a view-ability in a variety of light conditions.

anti glare seems to always win these polls. i wonder what percent antiglare is for total sales

The silver bezel of the AG gives the MBP a classic old school look. I personally like it. I mean, just look at the Macbook Air, no ones complaining about its silver boarders. :)
