I thought you said the new 15" matte screens are not grainy?!

You are a little paranoid, aren't you? I'm saying that the previous MBPs were grainy, not the current ones. Just re-read and you'll see.

Iwoot, it will be alright. Trust me, you're going to LOVE your new MBP and its wonderful display! Trust your old fellow-whiner...

Lol!! Thought you might have made him blow a fuse when he mistook your post as the new screens. :)

Matte. Yes, the colours are brighter on a glossy screen, but... I dont like it...

Well I say it is very good there is a choice now. This way everyone can select the style they like better. For years you could only get non glossy.

the verdict of your poll is going to be overwhelming for matte.

No offense, but there is a reason Apple chose to offer their main-stream, consumer notebook only in glossy, and almost all PC manufactures create glossy notebooks. Those things wouldn't be a reality if people over-whelming preferred matte....

I seem to agree with this.

This poll has been done before =S it was linked in a thread

When I was comparing the matte and glossy in the apple store, I noticed that the matte displayed much whiter whites and the gloss displayed much deeper blacks. The glossy tends to be a bit more saturated but also tends to have better contrast.

If you had a choice between matte and glossy with the MBP's take into account whether or not you'll always have a steady light source. Glossy does better in situations where it always has a constant light source, matte tends to be better for those on the go... IMO...

I have left the darkside and I have my first apple (15" macbookpro) coming Tuesday with a glossy screen. I also ordered a 20" cinema display for when I'm at my desk. I will save judgement until I use the glossy for awhile, but I'm a little worried about reflections. Has anyone had any experience with screen protectors like Lexerd TrueVue? Link http://lexerd.com/product/2653/15-inch . It looks like they have an anti-glare model. It would be nice to have the option of matte or gloss on the same machine.

I think it works better when you start off with a matte display then add the glossy filters if you want to...

i spend much of my time at a computer editting images in photoshop, and the screen that Im looking has to be matte... glossy really isnt even an option when it comes to accurate blacks and whites in on screen images. the glossy screen adds contrast, and this is nice for everyday use, but not if you must depend on your screen's ability to display contrast accurately

Well, it looks as if Matte won, but not to the point that the choice is obvious. Basically, both are great - but matte is a little bit more popular.

Matte won because usually people motivated enough to vote on a screen finish consider themselves "purists" and most people of that self distinction believe matte is an inferior screen finish. Like I said before, 95% of all laptop displays in production wouldn't be glossy if people truly preferred matte.

I chose glossy on my MBP, and I like it. However, on my next one I may switch to matte. The only reason being, when I am at home I connect my MBP to an Apple Cinema Display, which has a matte screen. Most of the time I put the MBP in Clamshell mode. Occasionally though, I leave it open for dual monitor use, and I think the screens would be more uniform if my MBP was matte.

It's all about personal preference. I really do like my old ibook's matte display, it was far superior to any windows laptop, but i've been using a Sony Vaio with a glossy screen for the past year and a half and i've got used to it.

It was my biggest headache when chosing my new MBP, but in the end i went with glossy. The colours looked richer and I just preferred the overall look.

I do actually like the new matte screens. Anyone else also noticed that the new matte finishing has more "sheen" to it? Maybe that explains why it is less grainy.

I don't really think either one is better, it is a personal choice for each buyer. I think it's nice that Apple lets up choose between the two. I would not cold order either purely based off what people are saying on the boards. Go to the store and check them out for yourself. You will be happier you did. :apple:

I suspect that a lot of the people that vote glossy have gone from iBooks to MacBooks. Indeed, a lot of the responses say as much. The MacBook screen is soooooooo much better than any iBooks that it could have a bubble-wrap finish and it would still look better.

I just got the matte screen and it is great. It is REALLY bright (my last laptop was the g4 12" ibook) and it is nice not having to deal with any reflections.

That's right, main-stream consumer and I wouldn't go as far as saying most of them think it's an inferior screen finish. To those that have to get by with working on there notebook monitors, matte screens tend to provide more accurate colors in comparison to final prints.

Good, I'm not crazy! I noticed the new matte displays have a bit more "gloss" this time around too. Just take a look at this picture from the ars technica review that shows a picture of a new MBP (with a matte screen):

Definitely more reflective than last model's display. Anyone else notice this too? Also, from what I hear, the new glossy displays are a little less reflective than before. Sounds like Apple narrowed the gap between the two display options.
