Ok, it may be a complicated question. I don't think I'm judging. That's why I mentioned it's the same as having a nice tv and ps4.....millions have that. I hope to not judge. I'm just sayin I don't know if you will find the answer in a screen or electronics is general because that is apparently what my dumb life wuz about

----------

Jason, I think that's good you don't watch tv, but five iPads might be too much. I don't know, I love them myself, just spent a month with a Rmini and 4 and now have the Air and just sold the 4 on cl, so easy. You can also use this stuff as currency at the pawn shop. They loaned me 95 percent of what I paid for my iPhone 5 and it was really helpful in a pinch. I'm going to maybe get my tv out of pawn today, for seventy dollars. But it will just remind me I don't have a ps4 and don't see how to get one.
95% of what u paid not what it's worth. They would rip u off if u never showed back up. $70 for a $650 phone heck yah! No reason judge the guy, when you can't even afford one ipad...

To come back to this, I use my air for browsing the web at home, cooking in the kitchen and generally blobbing out. The Mini comes out with me and gets used when I travel, however with the introduction of the air, the line is not so black and white any more. I find my self taking the Air also out on my travels. The mini gets left in my desk drawer. I will happily use either, and gets accustom dot the screen sizes very quickly.

I am the proud owner of a Ipad air and Ipad rMini. Trying to let one go but can't seem to do it. For those that have both how do you justify it. I understand and appreciate that having both is a privilege and viewed as gluttonous by some. I truly appreciate your input and perspective pro or con.

I was in your exact shoes for a whole month, literally stuck between the two and couldnt decide. The pros that one had, the other didnt have. The cons that one had, the other didnt have. There was no happy medium. I even weighed out the pros and cons of each to see which is more suitable for me.

Finally, what I did was force myself to use the one that you havent owned before for a good solid week, longer if you have to, while the other one sits on the shelf. The reason you use the one you havent owned before, is because you've already owned the other one so you already know how it fits into your life. Use it, see how you get used to it and like it in your everyday life. Eventually, you will have a preference of one and it will be obvious.

Finally after about 3 whole solid weeks of using the air, and no rmini, it was a lot more visual and clear cut that one was prefered over the other in my life. It took some adjustment, but I knew it was the one. But you wont come to this decision until you do what I did.:)

When i first got both, I inititally just kept going back and fourth between the two, to no avail. It got me nowhere.

Personally I find it foolish and a misdirection of energy to have both. To me, the basic issue is that it is a screen and watching others live life, in most or all instances. I say this as someone guilty of tv, video game, Internet addiction in the past. There's something vaguely creepy and dystopian, if that is the right word and it probably isn't, about so much electronics competing for people's time and attention. It's not a question of can you afford both. We re talkin bout nine hundred bucks. It's not an s class mercedes. It's roughly the cost of a nice 46 inch tv plus a ps4. A lot of people have that. The question is, do you want that and what's the point. The mini and air are similar in some ways and different in key ways. I just spent a month using my new retina mini and 4 side by side and ultimately concluded to use both a lot is to be spending too much time around electronics and to have both is redundant and unnecessary

Exactly and why i wont let myself owning both. Its redundant and really, no need for both. One collects dust most of the time either way, its just money sitting around. If this was a $50 device, it wouldnt be an issue to me, but when its 10 times that, yes its still a good chunk of money that could easily be used elswhere on much more important things. But im like Raj, I like to have only whats needed for electronic devices in my house. If I dont use it much, I have no need for it, simple as that.

I agree. I was asking honestly because if you can afford them and want them both that's allt he justification you need.

Thank you for your comment. I guess the way I worded my question, it looked like I was looking for reaffirmation of my purchases but what I was merely asking is, "if you have both how do you use them each?" I was not clear in my original question but except for one persons comments the feedback has been very helpful including yours. Thank you.

I could buy both, but for me better portability in a tablet form factor has always been the priority. Having two iPad's around would just lead to clutter and confusion in terms of what is downloaded on what, etc. not really worth that hassle to get more screen size once in a while. If portability was not important for me I would probably favor the Air.

I got my Gf the Air so there's one around the house ... it just isn't mine! If I'm am home and am missing some extra screen space, odds are i'll just go to my computer.

I'm tired of people being ashamed that they buy things with money that they worked hard to earn. It's your money, do what you want with it! If I had the money I'd have both. The rMini is great for toting around campus, and the Air is great at home in the evening on the couch as I used to have a full sized iPad before and slightly miss it. But overall I feel the rMini is best for my primary use.

BTW I'm not rich, just good with my finances (budgeting and saving), as well as finding new ways to produce extra income. No investments, just working.

To me, it's absolutely not a money issue. Even if you won the lottery today and won a million dollars, I'd still suggest you not get both. To me, it's about how much of life do you want to spend in front of a screen? I feel I wasted my life in front of one. Whether it is a tv or computer or some other screen, like a dumb little phone. There is a lot of beauty out there and you can find a balance between the screen and real world. I'd say the same thing if you have an Air or Mini and said you were thinking of getting a nice big screen tv. Personally, I would say it is redundant. Again, NOT because of money. I realize money is sensitive topic for many, myself included. I speak not of money, but of screens. That guy who quit electricity for a year with his wife and kids wrote a pretty interesting book.

Haha awesome post, I love it! I have been in the situation where I have every device you can imagine and I'm on them all day. Eventually you get to the point where you say "What kind of life is this?". One laptop, one tablet and even that is overkill for me. Post up the link of the book you wrote, maybe some will find it interesting.

Yea I am having a tough time trying to decide this too. I like both but I can only keep one. I've lived with the Air since launch and just picked up the Retina Mini yesterday. I like the small form factor of the Mini, but the washed out colors are disappointing. I do like the large screen on the Air, but it is still heavy and bulky when you add a typical folio case. I have the Targus Versvu and it adds almost a whole pound to the weight of the Air. I also have a 27" iMac (main machine) and an 11" MBA which I never use anymore, and an iPhone 5. The iPad never leaves the house and is used in bed reading, on the couch or while in the kitchen eating breakfast. I keep the MBA as a back up in case something would ever go wrong with my iMac I wouldn't be without a true computer. As of right now, I am leaning towards selling the iPad Air and keeping the Mini Retina. I think I will give it a week and use the Mini Retina then decide.

Ha ha, I'm flattered u think I wrote that book. Can assure u I couldn't write way out of paper bag, if need be. I seriously don't even know his name. Just read some of the book chillin at b and n. Like I said, it's about amount of electronics and in the end, amount of time in front of a screen. I always felt it was idiotic to have a tablet in addition to a laptop computer. When I got my ipad I vowed it or my hp laptop would have to go. U don't need both.

I use my Air at home and use the rMini at night for reading and for the road. I don't leave the house without the mini but love having a larger device when I'm home.

Thank you. So it sounds like you are using both equally.

Agree -that is how I use mine. I don't use both at the same time or insure that they get equal time so that my face isn't always in front of a screen. :D
It's a convenience to have both and that is all the justification I need.

Totally. They're not my kids. I don't have to give them both equal time or make sure I treat them equally. Just like my kids, I love them both the same.

He did it for the weird factor and to get a big payday.

There are people who have their child's first turd dipped in gold. Trust me having two ipads is not gluttonous. Enjoy them.

They are different devices, period. Since Apple has never released an iPod Touch with 128GB, I decided to get the rMini to replace my aging iPod Classic. It holds my music collection (most of it, anyway; even 128GB isn't enough and music in the cloud doesn't work for me). It has very few apps, just basics for reading, podcasts, and Netflix. It's small enough to be mobile and goes with me everywhere. It's WiFi only; if I need internet, I can tether it to my phone. At age 60+, I find the screen too small for extended reading with any app other than Kindle.

My iPad Air is more general purpose use, for reading, web surfing, video, app development, reference, and more. It goes to work with me, along with my MPB and Surface Pro, but mostly I use it at home.

Now there's gluttony if I've ever seen it. You take an MBP, Surface Pro AND ipad to work? May I ask why? Develop on all three platforms or what?

Yes. Development environment has to include Windows (7 and 8.1), OS X, iOS, and Android, as well as databases (SQL Server, client and server tools, plus Oracle client), IIS (web server), Visual Studio with ReSharper and Telerik libraries, XCode, Xamarin Studio (for C# development on iOS and Android, cross-platform compatible with Windows and Visual Studio), Photoshop, and Illustrator.

This is why developers have big honking machines, plus serious gadget dependency issues. It's an occupational hazard.

I don't see much point to having both unless there is more than one user involved. The Mini R is the same as the Air except for screen size.

They are the same except for size but that is what makes all the difference. People with minis tend to take them everywhere while a lot of Airs even with their reduced weight still stay home because they aren't as portable. Having that big beautiful screen is perfect for use at home. I love having both.
