Is it somehow less Holy to lie so close to Christmas? They should have just said nothing!

Not exactly a double DIN slot in there. What did you replace it with?
Alpine 9" stereo.

SOmeone else put a Pioneer unit in their Corolla, but that took a bit more modification on their part. But I'm ok with how this sits. It bothers some more than others. I personally think it looks fine.

How stupid do they think people are. If anything, the UI of any car manufacturers own interface is unsafe and offensive to my eyes.
In my 2023 Bolt, the CarPlay interface is much more familiar and easier for me to use. I tried GM's interface in my trial period and it was just confusing to me. If they're going to double down and remove CarPlay, they better hire some better UI designers.

I know Apple supports Music and Podcasts in Teslas, will they ever make these apps for this system?

GM is struggling. I know how to save it! Let's remove a feature that nearly every car buyer will want when buying a new car! FFS, what a stupid move!
I wonder how many potential sales will be 80% or 90% of the way there and then the buyer backs out upon finding out CarPlay isn't supported. It's a basic feature now. I know I'd back out immediately if I hadn't known beforehand.

This is such a weird hill for GM to die on.

Toyota was resistant to Android Auto and Carplay for a long time before finally started including them . They offered Carplay 1st and then later added Android Auto.

Earlier this year, General Motors (GM) announced plans to phase out Apple's CarPlay and Android Auto in its future electric vehicles, with the company instead relying on an infotainment system co-developed with Google. This has not been a popular decision with iPhone users, and today, GM provided some additional insight into the decision in a discussion with MotorTrend.

According to Tim Babbitt, GM's head of product for infotainment, GM has driver safety in mind. CarPlay and Android Auto can have issues like bad connections, slow response times, compatibility issues, and connectivity problems, leading drivers to be distracted from the road with smartphone troubleshooting.

Babbitt claims that drivers will be less likely to pick up their phones with a built-in system that does not rely on a service like CarPlay, leading to improved safety on the road. GM does not have any data to prove that an infotainment system is less distracting than CarPlay, nor has it done any testing.

Babbitt cited J.D. Power data suggesting issues with CarPlay and Android Auto are common complaints from vehicle owners, with customers often blaming the vehicle manufacturer rather than Apple or Google.

The infotainment system that GM plans to adopt instead of CarPlay will have integrated Google apps, including Google Maps and Google Assistant for voice commands, rather than a third-party navigation system. As MotorTrend points out, eliminating CarPlay will provide GM with more control over driver data, and it will allow GM to offer subscription services and apps that allow for purchases of food, gas, and other sundries.

Back in August, GM said that choosing not to offer CarPlay would give it more information about charge state information to assist with navigation routing and provide a better user experience.

CarPlay will be eliminated in electric vehicles under the Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, and GMC brands. Combustion vehicles from GM will continue to support CarPlay until they are phased out in favor of an all-electric lineup in 2035.

“and it will allow GM to offer subscription services and apps that allow for purchases of food, gas, and other sundries.” I thought their goal was to make the system more safe. I’m sure ordering your dinner during the commute back home is so safe.

What in the actual f?
Meanwhile, the Honda Prologue which is made by GM has CarPlay.

Gotta love it when a company shooting themselves in the foot.

If GM is so concerned about safety, why do their vehicles have multiple recalls, minor or otherwise, at any time? A friend and GM technician showed me so many times a list of notices.

This seems so consistent with their MO: make it cheap and fix it later.

Good thing I'd never buy a GM anyway. Government Motors sucks!

That said, it should be available as an alternative. I can also see a possible benefit as a vehicle ages, where manufacturers could decide to sunset some of the connectivity services.
A very good point made. German car manufacturers I know are pushing subscription models after 3 years and not just for ability of nav maps updates. So take the option for alternatives away and folks are stuck paying thereafter OR will unsafely juggle their phones in hand.

That's smart. Let's take away distracting features so it's safer. GM, we've got to can those giant screens in vehicles like the Escalade-IQ. Wait, no you won't, it's necessary to drive around a movie theater, oh that's ironic.

If safety is their reasoning then they should gut all the unnecessary electronics in the dash, lol. And even the cup holder. Those are all "distractions". Even the mirror in the sunvisor. He should just speak the truth. They want their own setup.
That would no be enough for me. I would not want Apple bloatware on a car I bought with my own money. I would neither want any Android apps in a car.
I'm not understanding what you mean? YOu can't use carplay unless you have an Apple device. If you're on Android that's entirely moot.
